An interesting, very dated look at the frontier from a Dude. I don't mean "doood" I mean, wearing fancy clothes, not really frontier material man of the city out of his depth in the west DUDE. His attitudes toward the local tribes in the areas he lives is outrageously slanderous, his treatment of events is comical in its typical misunderstanding.

Let me put it this way. Imagine this guy telling the story of going out west:

Report of the Week

The stories he tells are interesting, and despite himself he is kind of heroic, by just sticking to the job and seeing it through whatever he does, even if its miserable. His portrayal of late 1800s Denver is fascinating and the people he meets and interacts with are worthy of reading about. But in the end you can't help think the guy is just lost and confused.

1 stella e mezza.

More like 1865 to 1870

One thinks of towns like Deadwood as being dangerous in the West. Not Denver.

Written by a man who went west in 1865 and remained there for some years. The West was indeed a dangerous place.

Perhaps a bit over the top in his memory, I found the narrative interesting and educational.

Unlike many of these historical books, this one has been edited for a good reading experience.

Very interesting historical 1st hand account of the untamed wear

I really enjoyed this young mans tales of his 4 years living in the wild untamed west. Days gone by, never to be relived again.

A delight

A case where fact is way more interesting than any novel. Fresh still after 150 years. If you like stories of the plains crossing this has to be one of the best.

A fun and easy to read narrative of the Santa Fe Trail. By itself not very significant, but in conjunction with other histories or travelogs, a quick addition to the times which were already gone by the Civil War.
