Chronicles the developments in modern warfare since 1939, examining major conflicts of the Second World War, the Cold War and its associated conflicts, guerilla warfare, and terrorism
I'll give this one 3.75 stars. This is one of the better books of this type ("coffee-table" books on modern warfare) that I have read, and I've read quite a few of them. Although roughly one third of the book is devoted to World War II, the coverage of both British & French wars of de-colonisation is quite a bit more thorough than is usually the case. Amazingly, coverage of the Portuguese colonial wars is equally good; in addition the Dutch experience is covered adequately. The section on the Arab-Israeli conflict is good though concise, and is greatly enhanced by several really well-done maps. The maps throughout the book are numerous and uniformly excellent & useful; likewise the selection and quality of photographs is also well above average. I wasn't expecting much from this book, but was pleasantly surprised. I'm quite happy I ended up getting it, particularly since it only cost me $1.00!
