Guibert, who was also a photographer, critic and filmmaker, writes with photographic realism in narratives constructed of discrete cinematic scenes.
Guibert's passion for truth is also evident in works such as "My Parents" and "The Gangsters," where he ruthlessly analyzes his relationship with his parents, aunts, friends and lovers. But his courageously revealing candor is positively harrowing in his memoir "The Compassion Protocol," which causes one to lament the many works -- writings, photographs and films -- that might have been realized if he had not died at 36.

"The Compassion Protocol" is a psychological portrait of a man in the prime of his life struck down by a guillotine that had been set above his head years earlier. However, the man never believed the blade would fall; he never grasped from the moment of its construction his arms and legs were bound in cement. At 35, a brilliant author with the world at his beck and call, Herve Guibert imagined he would go on forever. There would be a cure for AIDS. Surely there would be. It was inevitable.
Only it wasn't.
The key to "The Compassion Protocol" is to internet search 'Herve Guibert video' and to find an interview from March 16, 1990 that was conducted for his book, "À l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauvé la vie". At the time of the interview, Mr. Guibert is approximately 35; yet, one might mistake him for a senior citizen.
Death is upon the man. He will die a year and a half later.
"The Compassion Protocol" was written during this 19 month period as a chronicle of the end stages of AIDS. Astoundingly, hope is not excluded. The author stares in the mirror and a skeleton leers as reflection; nonetheless, he seeks the miracle drug that will restore health. Mr. Guibert reaches out to an American millionaires, calls on high connections in the French Ministry of Health, travels to Los Angeles for an experimental AIDS vaccine, and seeks a Tunisian healer who utilizes magnetism to cure the direst illnesses. All to no avail. Death recognizes no strata of social standing. A fate of disintegration to dust is allotted us all.
"The Compassion Protocol" is a great book for anyone who desires to know some of the more clinical details of the end stages of AIDS. However, the work is marred for me a bit by the author's confessions of pedophilia. He speaks graphically of stealing and sniffing what he believes are the underpants of a 12 year old boy. I wondered why I had never heard of Mr. Guibert, and his illicit taste in young men may be the reason for his literary entombment. Additionally, as I wrote of Paul Monette's work, "Last Watch of The Night", I don't understand why someone with AIDS would actively still be seeking sexual intercourse with strangers. Yet, a year prior to his death, Mr. Guibert speaks of engaging in sex with a man who then disappears on a motorbike.

Je ne laisse pas de commentaire habituellement, mais j'ai pour Hervé Guibert une tendresse particulière. Cela vient peut-être du fait que j'ai à peu près le même âge que lui lors des dernières années de sa vie alors qu'il était malade. Son histoire et la manière très simple, très belle de la raconter est très touchante. Il est très honnête et très juste dans l'évocation de l'épuisement que provoque la maladie.
Je n'avais pas été tout à fait conquis en le découvrant avec "Fou de Vincent", mais cette trilogie du sida que j'ai entamée avec "À l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauvé la vie", puis ce livre ci, a totalement changé mon opinion.

Déçue par ce second tome de la trilogie sur le sida, malgré un si beau titre. À l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauvé la vie m'avait beaucoup plu pour l'urgence de son écriture, son filon narratif soutenu, la mort que l'écrivain côtoie de si près. En comparaison, Le Protocole compassionnel m'est apparu sans substance réelle. Les nombreux commentaires sexistes, racistes, narcissiques et pédophiles de l'écrivain me l'ont rendu bien moins sympathique.

À l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauvé la vie m'avait fait grande impression quand je l'avais lu (au lycée ? en prépa ? je me souviens qu'il s'agissait d'une édition assez ancienne qui n'avais pas été empruntée depuis plusieurs années). Depuis, j'ai un peu découvert ses photographies (peut-être le catalogue de l'expo que lui avait consacrée la MEP), j'ai lu Les Aveugles...
Je connais un peu l'univers de l'auteur.
Cette lecture a été moins marquante que la première que j'ai faite de lui : j'avais oublié que je l'avais lu, pour tout dire, c'est en voyant le livre posé sur l'étagère que je me suis souvenue...
C'est peut-être l'écriture du corps malade qui m'avait le plus retenue. Elle est toujours là.
La fin est belle : il est plein de vie, heureux. Ce n'est sans doute qu'un moment d'enthousiasme, vite remplacé par la fatigue et la douleur mais il a choisi de terminer sur ce sentiment.

When reading Herve, one gets into the mood of wanting to scream, love, eat, fuck: live life to the fullest. And realise a paradox: one is being alive the most when one is dying. Among other things, Herve forces you to try and be alive before your own death, he reminds you of the main struggle in life: being alive before dying, fighting to be born and reborn before your body fails you. If not now, when? If not you, who?

Mon ressenti concernant le premier tome de cette trilogie était assez mitigé. Je l’avais globalement aimé, mais j’étais passé à côté d’un certain nombre de choses et n’en ai pas retenu grand chose une fois achevé.
J’ai été très agréablement surpris lors de ma lecture de celui-ci. J’ai trouvé le récit d’Hervé Guibert plus intime et mes suis vraiment investi dans sa progression. Je ne saurais dire si j’étais simplement dans un meilleur état d’esprit ou si ce livre est réellement meilleur que le précédent.

Le moins bon de la trilogie sur le sida à mon sens (parce qu'il possède une ligne directrice plus faible: l'aspect romanesque de l'oeuvre est moins fort), mais bouleversant malgré tout
Rapport fascinant au temps (chronologie éclatée de l'intrigue, la superposition des époques, l'impression d'être un jeune homme dans le corps de l'époque)
***MAIS (comme toujours chez Guibert, j'en viens à constater) présence de vocabulaire raciste et érotisation/prédation de très jeunes hommes, voire garçon, par le narrateur adulte

This wasn't Herve's best work. It was a bit hard to follow and felt very dry and lacking emotion to me, but there were some lines here and there that were truly moving. Like in all of his works, you really get a sense that the author was really running on so little time and did his best to capture every moment and cherish it because he knew it might be his last. This book just wasn't his most memorable and sometimes felt very unreadable, but what a talent and a loss, nonetheless.

Très beau récit de vie. C'est la suite de son livre "à l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauvé la vie" qu'il faut absolument avoir lu en premier.
Extrêmement bien écrit. Son récit nous replonge dans le Paris des années 80, l'arrivée du SIDA et de sa progression dans la communauté gay.
J'ai trouvé la fin de ce livre un peu poussif, un peu long, notamment la description de son voyage au Maroc.

Récit de tendresse et vulnérabilité. Des petits éspoirs dans un corps et une vie qui paraît, et, malheureusement, a fini pour être destiné à la mort. Des histoires d'amour et de compassion. Un récit profond, avec des traces de violence comme c'était À l'ami, mais avec un certain calme, un calme qui peut-être annonçait déjà l'acceptation, le deuil, l'élégie qui Guibert avait fait avec soi-même.

Perdiendo absolutamente la capacidad de leer porque el trabajo de oficina me vuelve tontísima!!! De todas formas Hervé siempre ahí para recordarme lo banales que son todas las vivencias ajenas gracias 💆🏻♂️
