A Second Loving
Emma was at a loose end
She'd come to America to nurse her brother back to health. Then she found he didn't need her -- his new girlfriend was only too pleased to help out.
That's when Tor Pedersen stepped in and offered to show Emma the sights. She felt wary of this forceful Viking of a man -- his eyes seemed to read her innermost thoughts. She realized, too, how easily she could fall for him.
And that was one tumble Emma had to avoid at all costs -- since Tor wanted a no-strings affair.

Hero proposed to his first wife after 3 weeks of a whirlwind courtship, and they had an extremely happy marriage for several years, until her tragic death. He meets the heroine, his friend’s sister, two and a half years after being widowed, as he is slowly starting to come to terms with his grief, and deciding he would like to play the field. Though he is very vocal about his disdain for the heroine’s engagement to a limp lettuce leaf ( and cheating) OM, he is not offering to take his place at the altar, just in bed at least for a while and without commitment. Basically, his wife was good enough to propose to but the heroine is only good enough for a shack up situation. His concluding I LOVE YOU and marriage proposal seemed strained and phony, less made out of love and more out of a certain sense of guilt because the young, virginal, and somewhat naive heroine broke up her engagement to OM and told hero she loved him. I think this “second loving” will always be a second-best.
