Here are my views on this book, as an adult reader. The story is written in a simplistic style well suited for children, and the soft but colorful illustrations add charm to the tale. I would have liked to have seen an illustration featuring the toy elephant character Veronica, since all of the other named toy characters seemed to appear in the illustrations. I also felt that the short section tacked on to the end of the story where the toy maker changed the name of his shop by replacing the sign over the door seemed unnecessary, except to justify the book's title. Did I like it? It wasn't bad for what it was. Would I reread it? Reading it once was enough for me. Would I recommend it? Stories about toys that come to life still seem to be very popular with the reading public, and this book helps pad out that genre nicely. I feel comfortable recommending this work to children in the intended age range who have already exhausted the standard catalog of go-to stories featuring living toys. Not to mention, the ending and the story as a whole are more cheerful than some more well-known books that use this plot device.
One of my favorites as a kid. Such a cozy, magical story with beautiful artwork. It reminds me a lot of the "Elves & the Shoemaker" story but with a more Christmasy feel.
