SHE’S SO COOL Yamato is ready for a fresh start. So when his aunt invites him to stay rent-free in her big-city boarding house in hustling, bustling Tokyo, Yamato jumps at the chance. There’s just one teensy-weensy catch: It’s an all-girl housing complex and spa! Things get even more nerve-racking when Yamato meets his neighbor Suzuka, a beautiful track-and-field star. She’s not just the cutest girl Yamato’s ever met, she’s also the coolest, the smartest, and the most intimidating. Can an ordinary guy like Yamato ever hope to win over a girl like Suzuka?

After being openly dumped by Suzuka, Yamato is now on his own and tries to move on. He starts reflecting on his performance at the sprinting track and slowly receives more recognition from the teammates. What's more, his friends begin to hang around him more than usual. Can Yamato adapt to these changes in his life?

"Suzuka" Volume 14 is sort of a breather entry in the manga series. Lacking a deep story and interesting bonus content, this volume feels more like a collection of filler situations. There are parts where Yamato is contemplating the past events, but quickly gets sidetracked by the re-appearance of Honoka and the presence of his frenemy Hattori. His aunt's daughter Miho also joins in, and the sporty girl Miki participates in hanging around Yamato in the volume's story segments.

The segments are light-hearted and mostly exist for Yamato to interact with the mentioned characters in Suzuka's absence. Also, due to the incident at the end of the previous volume, Yui is not present in this book's segments, save for a one-page character profile that was long overdue. This is unfortunate because Yui was an interesting character that I wanted to know more about.

The good thing about this volume is the effort put into the art. The backgrounds now contain significantly more detailed people bustling around the city streets, further giving life to the scenes. The art of the characters remains fine here, all with expressive faces whenever appropriate to their moods and reactions to situations and each other.

Volume 14 of "Suzuka" feels like a collection of stories that deliberately take readers' minds off of the main story at hand. Perhaps the author felt that the main storyline was getting very emotionally intense and decided to tone things down accordingly. Well, he succeeded in that regard and now we have a manga volume with mildly entertaining story segments that are detached from the main plot. Hopefully the next volume will bring the story back on track and make things more interesting than what we have in this entry.
