One of the classic texts of 20th century photographic history. Reading it is a wonderful experience of the era and locale, as well as a glimpse of the photographic world that remains surprisingly relevant. I lost track of how many times his commentary from c.1925 sounded like it was in response to 21st century photo trends and tendencies. This book is a constant reminder of that old theme in historical works: people don't really change that much.

Those looking for photo tips will find little reason to read this; it's not a textbook, it's his journal. But those with a love for the history of the craft and an affection for Edward will likely find this time spent with him very rewarding. I certainly did.

What a journey! It has been a quite long time since I enjoyed accompanying a book like this. Only a few people who get to write a magnificently written journals and have the key to best describe what they are living, seeing, thinking and even smiling. He will make you read it with your all five senses. I just finished it and now I can't wait o get the first volume of the daybooks (California).
