3 ½ Stars ~ This is my first romance by Kathleen Eagle. I enjoyed the steady gentle pacing as the heart of this story unravels.

Sam is a good man, one you can count on, one who understands duty, one who doesn't hesitate to place the deserving under his care. This is not to say he didn't have a few wild days when he determinedly left Bear Root for the Alaska oil fields and then any where his feet would wander. That's how he met Merrilee, but she loved someone else, so Sam joined the marines. Now eight years later, he's back in the very place he couldn't wait to leave, his home town Bear Root. As the town and county Sheriff, Sam has found his place, and he hopes a woman with her young son, to build a future with.

Maggie's the district nurse and she sought out a place like Bear Root to escape the bustle of east coast city life, to raise her son. She's not looking for a man after a bad choice with young Jimmy's father. Her attraction to Sam and the positive role he has for her son, is something she's slowly allowing to grow. Life is good in Bear Root for both Sam and Maggie, there's a future.

And then a small child, Star Brown, walks into Sam's mother's general store and says that according to her mother, Hilda is her grandmother. She'd arrived in town with her mother, Merrilee, who is very sick, so sick that an ambulance takes her to the hospital and she never gets the chance to explain why they came to Bear Root. Sam cautiously tries to get Star to open up, and from the bits she reveals, he's sure that Merrilee and Star were running away from someone.

Ms. Eagle weaves her story with well developed main and empowering secondary characters. The children, Star and Jimmy not only add charm but highlight the depth of the hero and heroine. The Rocky Mountain setting is the perfect backdrop for the even pacing and gentle romance.

What started off as an intriguing story became a rapidly disappointing book. It seemed right after the initial introduction of our main characters and the scenario that brought them together, everything went down hill. At first, I thought I was just getting distracted by other things around me until I focused on why this book wasn't keeping my attention. I realized everything was very bare bones; I couldn't picture the characters or the town at all because we were just "told" who/what they were rather than "shown." Plus the series of events became so meshed together, I was getting so confused on what was going on. The romance aspect of the story between Sam and Maggie was so undeveloped and quickly passed over to focus on the mystery surrounding Star. I feel like this needed to be worked on more to flush out the story, especially with how disappointing the conclusion was. So glad this was a short book, so I didn't waste too much time reading this.

This was more... grandmother romance than romance-romance, if that makes any sense. An adorable small girl shows up at the house of a woman she proclaims is her grandmother; her mother conveniently dies and she's given into this grandmother's custody; a traumatic upbringing and drug-addicted parents don't seem to have left any marks on her; and in the meantime, the likely-father (grandmother's son) and the grandmother's friend (who she wants to hook up with her son) start coming over to dinner every night and enjoying grandmother's pearls of wisdom. Uh. Yeah. The actual romance (between son and friend) is pretty much an afterthought; the suspense plot shoehorned in at the end should have been left out. Writing is as always good, but this was a snoozer.

a sweet story; I loved the characters, the kids Jimmy and Storm, the grandma Hilda and of course Sam Beaudry and Meggie. I loved this tranquil pace, the tenderness always there,
I loved less the 60 millions of dollars, the kidnapping and sudden change of heart of V. then again I appreciate that Kathleen Eagle didn't paint him totally villain.

Another excellent one from Kathleen Eagle!

I enjoy Kathleen Eagle because most of her books about Native American communities are contemporary and realistic. Some other authors treat Indigenous persons and stories as if they're artifacts, just as an insect trapped in amber got frozen in its past time.

I have a strange relationship with Kathleen Eagle, some of her books really work for me, some don't. This one did for the most part, because of the lovely repartee between hero and heroine, because of a great granddaughter and grandmother pairing, and it is set in a lovely landscape near and Indian reservation.

The hero is half-Indian and totally yummy, the heroine is the mother of a boy from an affair gone wrong, born as the child of parents who always followed their own interests so she has been moving from place to place for quite a while.

The whole backplot with the lottery ticket and the nasty guy from the past could have been easily gotten rid of without harming the book in the least (and should have been, in my opinion). The way Sam adapts to Star, who has noone else now (even though he most likely isn't her father), the way he deals with his memories of her mother and with the impressions those leave with Maggie. The fierceness of his mother's love for her granddaughter and her hope for him, those just shine.

And for some reason the lovemaking descriptions here were just the right combination of tender and hot to make me envy those two lovebirds ^^. All of this at category length, not too shabby.

maybe 2.5 stars. this was a weird read and i only picked it up because i accidently bought the newest book in a series without reading any of the previous books. this is the first in the series.

overall, i didn't feel any real connection between sam and maggie. the writing seemed kind of choppy and didn't flow very well. i often had to re-read paragraphs to figure out who was talking and who they were talking about.

debating on whether i should read the next ones. leaning towards no.

Western Mystery Triller Romance

Star Brown walks into small town country store looking for her Grandmother, that she has never meet, Hilda Beaudry. She is seven and a half, the half is important. A ambulance rolls threw town siren wailing, Star takes of running, her new found grandma fallowing. That is just the being!

Not bad. Kathleen Eagle's dialogue is so succinct, laconic, even that I didn't get the development of the characters' relationship. They seemed to understand it, but I, the reader, was lost.

A quick entertaining read somewhat marred by poor editing. I did like the characters in this book.
