Like the title, this book covered more than a basic explanation of mass media effect (but mostly on TV) with lots of references.

I read the latest version of this book, which is now by Jennings Bryant and Mary Beth Oliver, as Dolf Zillman has apparently retired.

This is well-rounded look at all the major theories in American Communications Studies as well as the major subjects, from sex and violence to individualism. A must have for any communication person's bookshelf.

Not an easy read, but a good primer of the state of the art in comm. theory ca. 1990 or so.
