My first graders are going to love the poems in the book of poems called "School Supplies" selected by Lee Bennet Hopkins. The book starts with a poem about the school bus and then heads to the school. Each poem describes a typical item used during a school day, but the descriptions are anything but typical. In these poems ballpoint pens dance ballet, paper clips are jaws that pinch, and a compass traces like a skater on ice. I'm going to have a lot of fun with this poem book in my first grade classroom. I will use some of the poems to teach visualization. I will use some of the poems to model descriptive writing. I'm even going to play a little game of "guess what" on some of these poems. Lee Bennet Hopkins wrote the first poem about the school bus and selected the rest of the poems for this themed anthology. Some of the poems' authors have been around for a long time and others are new writers. Renee Flower's illustrations are delightfully colorful. The children in the illustrations look almost like little clowns because she made their faces all different colors and designs. Many of the inanimate objects are brought to life with faces and sometimes extra body parts. The overall feeling portrayed is that school is a fun adventure! I recommend this book for K-2nd grade students.
This is a collection of multiple poems by various writers. My favorite parts to this book were its detailed pictures, its poem "A Book" promoting reading, and "The Eraser Poem." Why "The Eraser Poem"? Its format. That's all I will say, because it is worth the seconds it takes to read!
The pictures personify the objects, which in turn makes school and its supplies, more appealing.
Young children could really enjoy listening to a read-aloud of this book, especially while viewing the images, or better--using the objects!
I love this book. Talking about the school supplies in a very interesting way. It is amazing for me to put a poem for each school supplies and explain what you do with each supply for example when he talked about the book and say “Closed, there’s nothing I can say. Open, we can dream and stray”. This book will be very good for children at the beginning of the school year. The pictures were bright, and very colorful. The one that I like is “A book” By Myra Cohn Livingston.
This book is excellent for the first day of school for early elementary grades. It explores school supplies in a unique and interesting way for students. Each school supply has its unique poem that explains the shape, texture, and color of the supply. The poems not only include school supplies, but also incorporates other everyday activities students may be familiar with.
This book contains lots of poems from different authors. All of the poem are about different school supplies and the pictures were bright. The poems were really fun to read. I really enjoyed reading this book.
This book is excellent to read during the first days of school. It allows the students to relate to how they feel when entering school for the first time.
This book is a perfect way for kids to learn the fun part of school supplies. It's funny, the illustrations are fun, and it hits so many school supplies like erasers, writers notebook, crayons and more. It's in poem form which is also fun and cute!
