Relaunching the adventures of the U.S.S. da Vinci, as Captain David Gold, Commander Sonya Gomez, and the rest of Starfleet's miracle workers solve the problems of the galaxy, one disaster at a time. At first, Dr. Sarjenka -- the first Dreman to graduate from Starfleet Medical Academy -- thought her posting to the da Vinci as deputy chief medical officer was a dream assignment. But her new boss, Dr. Elizabeth Lense, doesn't want her there, her mentor, Captain Gold, is surly and unapproachable, and she finds the atmosphere on the da Vinci to be radically different from what she expected. Sarjenka's trial by fire comes when the da Vinci is sent to Betrisius, where neural implants that are used to rehabilitate criminals in lieu of prisons are malfunctioning. The S.C.E. team must find a way to repair the damage -- and learn the truth behind why the implants aren't working before the planet devolves into chaos.... Beginning all-new adventures of the S.C.E.!

About the author

Dayton Ward

106 books318 followers
Dayton is a software developer, having become a slave to Corporate America after spending eleven years in the U.S. Marine Corps. When asked, he’ll tell you that he left home and joined the military soon after high school because he’d grown tired of people telling him what to do all the time.

Ask him sometime how well that worked out.

In addition to the numerous credits he shares with friend and co-writer Kevin Dilmore, he is the author of the Star Trek novels In the Name of Honor and Open Secrets, the science fiction novels The Last World War and The Genesis Protocol, and short stories which have appeared in the first three Star Trek: Strange New Worlds anthologies, the Yard Dog Press anthology Houston, We’ve Got Bubbas, Kansas City Voices Magazine and the Star Trek: New Frontier anthology No Limits. Though he currently lives in Kansas City with wife Michi and daughters Addison and Erin, Dayton is a Florida native and still maintains a torrid long-distance romance with his beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The past

I was a good ways into this one when I realized I've read it before. Still a really good story. I love Star Trek both in print and on the screen. It's always nice to find something outside the regular characters that is engaging.

The viewpoint from a new starfleet officer is a really effective one, especially someone we know from the show. Makes you appreciate the other characters experiences when seen through that lens.

I have been a fan of the Star Trek Corp of Engineers since they were first mentioned in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. This series have been amazing and this book was no exception. But beyond the short story and the cool tech ideas, there is a element of continuity within this book. We are approaching the 50th Year of Star Trek, an unbroken line of modern mythology. This leads to a history within that mythology. In this book a character from an earlier SCE novel joins the crew, which echoes the tradition within the Star Trek cannon. From Worf joining DS9 to Q becoming infatuated with Janeway and beyond to Spock Prime helping the new crew of the old Enterprise. I guess I am getting old when these thing become important to me - but on the other hand, like David Gold in the story I am finding new Trek fans and friends in my old age. Guess this was just the right book at the right time for me.

I have enjoyed reading the Star Trek books for twenty years and watched them since the beginning. The Starfleet Corps of Engineers I didn't read until they were in print several years ago. This is one of the first e-book with my kindle.

The characters have become friends. I enjoy their experiences and mourn their losses. Sonya Gomez and Domenica Corsica are strong, admirable women. David Gold is a wonderful fatherly leader. The relationship with the new and old characters meld well.

I've missed these since they weren't printed but glad for my kindle for this reunion.

A promising reboot to a great series. Lots of interesting ideas, a new character, a look backward as well. Looking forward to more.
