Ranging from the history of herbalism & the biology & chemistry of plants, to aspects of herb cultivation, collection, & preservation, this illustrated book lists 420 herbs, with information on their habitats & uses. 9" x 11 1/2".
When I decide whether or not an herbal is a candidate for purchase/future reference I lookup a half a dozen herbs and judge 1) the quality/depth of the information I get back 2) how well the information is organized
This book was definitely well organized, but I found what appears to be misinformation on catnip. The book said that catnip is a stimulant which goes against my other herbals but due to the complex nature of herbs I can let that slide. On the other hand, the author also said that catnip is a mild hallucinogen. This seems to stem from one erroneous publication that some of my other herbals repudiate.
Based on the above (which is indeed a limited look), this book is not a work of knowledge but a work of half-hearted assimilation. I might have just stumbled on the author's biggest mistake but I don't want to put my health in the hands of an editor who does not do there homework.
Herbs and herbalism is described herein is beautifully and simply. A wonderful book to peruse through and detailed to boot but not overly complicated. NUF SED 🤔😬
I've been reading this book over the past year. It's got loads of great tips and ways to use herbs for cooking, health and honestly just about everything.
1. History of herbalism 2. Biology and chemistry of plants 3. Medicinal uses of plants 4. Herbs in the kitchen 5. Domestic and cosmetic uses of herbs 6. Cultivation and preservation of herbs 7. A-Z of herbs illustrated with monochrome line drawings & photos
Introductory sections very thorough in history and biology. Lots of useful recipes in sections 3-5.
