The war with the Raven Sect is taking Hadjar further and further away from his original goal. This time, he’s ended up in another world — the world of the Spirits and Fae. The General has already been here before, but he’s never tried to do something as audacious as stealing a treasure from one of the Queens. What will this latest adventure lead to? Will everything end here, in failure? Without the support of the mysterious and powerful Twilight Secrets Sect, the fight against the Raven Sect is doomed from the start… But their aid might just be too costly to attain.
Way to the South by Kirill Klevanski is the 18th book in the Dragon Heart series, and one that I savored for longer than most. If I have a single criticism about Klevanski is that often there is the illusion of movement in the narrative, but in retrospect appear to be temporary busywork until the plot happens. That's sort of true here, though I will say there is more plot and development happening. There's some set up for Hadjar and the wolves of the Northern Court to become major rivals, perhaps coming into full swing once the Raven sect is mostly dealt with. Some old elements came back as well. But while there is movement, some of it is marching in place. I found the firewood element of a storyline particularly groan-inducing. I get that this was meant to display a new mechanic and push the narrative forward in an interesting way, but if someone who may be a step or two shy of being an immortal is taking a long time to cut down a tree and possesses no other way to give a guest in his house some warmth, something has gone wrong with how we understand power in this world. Maybe that's the point behind some of Hadjar's musings, which won't be too unsurprising to the readers paying attention.
The last chapter is quite the doozy though. I don't have the next book yet, but I'm eager to pick up the series again once I have it.
Author continues to keep readers enthralled with colorful language. Very few series manage maintain their spark and their readers imagination so books deep into the story.
I am absolutely livid at the that this book ended. It's so good that I just need more! I recommend this book series for adults and older teens who like fantasy and cultivation.
This series continues to amaze. Every book l eads us further into peoples schemes and plans that seem to reach further than anyone could have ever imagined.
