November? Did I miss the October issue? No, the October issue became the November issue because of a loss of communication due to a couple of spam folders. Everything was sorted out and now here we are. This issue boasts three stories and interviews by Jared Kerr, Garrett Boatman, and H. E. Johnston.

Ragnar's Bane by Garrett Boatman

Blown off course, a crew of Vikings make landfall and discover a lone maiden held prisoner by her father the wizard Assur. Ragnar Broadaxe is beguiled by Snofrid's beauty and the promise of plunder. He learns that if he murders her father, it will set her free and he can have her and the wizard's trove. Cooler heads try to dissuade Ragnar, but he will not reconsider. What could go wrong?

To Outlast the Moon by Jared Kerr

A general has outlived his usefulness. The emperor has sent his Executioner and Witness to end the General's life by trial of combat. If the General should happen to win, he will be given a few days reprieve before another Executioner will be sent. If the General should happen to flee, he will be hunted like an animal. His honor dictates that he should stand and fight.

City of the Forgotten Kings by H. E. Johnston

Tanet the Lioness of Jiril and her companion Ghede of Zabal are running low on funds. The merchant Adek is spewing tales of an enormous gem hidden deep within the sanctum of the Dreaming God Ea-Ammun. Which lies within the cursed city of the forgotten kings.

This duo reminds me of David Madison's Marcus and Diana stories. Diana is a is an iron-willed swordswoman and warrior while Marcus seems to stand in her shadow but boasts a skill set and strength that complements Diana perfectly. Tanet and Ghede have a similar relationship. Tanet the Lioness of Jiril is certainly a homage to Jirel of Joiry by C.L. Moore. Which by the way is a fantastic read.

3 good S&S stories. Back to what the monthly should be. The first and last were superb. The middle story was ok, no sorcery or weirdness in it, but still nice. I’m looking forward to the next installment.

Savage Realms Monthly #16 - Cover Dated November 2022. Having purchased this smart little magazine from its inception, I continue to read and review in order so that I can give an assessment of it as it progresses and grows. To date, my reviews have regularly been 4-star rated but that is mostly due to a lack of copy editing that could be easily addressed (though, being a small house publication, this may be a one or two person production and time may be priceless), while the stories themselves have happily consistently ranged from above average to excellent. This edition, in particular, had an amazing anthology of the standard three stories, and, while 78 pages in length, with 62 of those pages actually story content (the rest are the standard post story writer interviews), the three were perhaps the strongest entry to date (individual stories from other issues not withstanding).

RAGNAR'S BANE by Garrett Boatman - A vikings lust and greed draws him into a plan for freedom. But the true plan is more sinister than could be imagined.

TO OUTLAST THE MOON by Jared Kerr - The rewards of service are beyond any dreams, but loyal service comes with its own sacrifices. For General Jalan Hazim that sacrifice has been called for payment, but the method of that payment may be terrible beyond imagining.

CITY OF THE FORGOTTEN KINGS by H. E. Johnston - The bragging of one thief, may lead to the pay day for another. Still, you must earn that pay day, and its not called the city of the FORGOTTEN KINGS for nothing and Tanet and Ghede must find what was forgotten.

Personally, I must say that Jared Kerr's TO OUTLAST THE MOON was a personal favorite and perhaps one of the more emotionally impactful (at least for me) stories I have read in quite some time.

More to come....

Three More

Three more short stories to satisfy your sword and sorcery itch, especially the first and third ones with the demons and wizards, don't remember much about the second one.
