A touching, inspiring, helpful and engrossing book with 101 true life stories of invaluable lessons, the writers have learned from the dogs in their lives-who are not called man's best friend for nothing-anyone who has lived with dogs and opened up to their lives and loyalty will attest to this..
As a dog lover, who has from birth always had and lived with dogs, this was a book I could strongly relate to and enjoyed every minute of it.
Some of the stories made my heart sing and some I could relate to what I've observed in my own dogs such as the older dog running from bowl to bowl to make sure the newcomer could not eat from either one. Some are humorous-dogs often have senses of humour too Dealing also with every breed there is from Chihuahuas to Labrador and boxers and mastiffs.
Breathtaking stories of dogs saving their owners and their children from falling trees and crazed intruders, knowing beforehand from instruction what had to be done, Stories of how dogs took their owner through bereavement and surviving cancer and chemotherapy. some of these dogs prove how dogs have a strong spiritual dimension. Often these dogs are brought to us at the right time as if by divine intervention
A lot of these stories brought tears to my eyes. Tenderly written accounts of people losing their dogs to old age and illness (a sad fact of life that the lives of our dogs are only a fraction of ours) , tragic accidents. and in one case killed after rescuing it's owner from a bear.
Many of these true life tales are written by professional writers and journalists, but they are all moving and wonderful to read, and most of all indeed insuring 'chicken soup for the soul'.

It’s dog stories for dog people. Not much risk of not liking it. I did forget I was reading it and had a hiatus of about 11.5 months but considering my year I am just glad I rounded back.

I knew this would be a great book based on the cover model, and I'm not talking about the one in the blue shirt here. That said, I don't think that cover model had a story in the book, as I only remember one bulldog mentioned as a childhood pet, so he must be there purely for eye candy.
This was the 2nd or 3rd Chicken Soup book I've read that dealt with dogs, and was a completely new set of stories. I didn't remember any of these from other books. In contrast to other Chicken Soup books, every entry here was a story. No poetry, letters, lists, etc., which made me enjoy it more, as it's different to keep a workout going at the gym while trying to interpet poetry or read a list of information. Of course, there were the usual comics, all of which were dog-related, and many of which reminded me of my own dog.
In terms of the stories, they were divided into chapters based on the lesson the dogs were teaching. There were plenty of happy stories, and probably an equal number of sad ones. Though the sad ones were often in the same chapters, I didn't find those chapters to be unbearable, as there were usually happy memories preceding the sad part.
Overall, a great collection of stories all about my favorite type of pet, and I was happy to see that there is a new volume of Chicken Soup dog stories out now or coming out soon.

I listened to this book many nights to put myself to sleep. There are many stories about people, and their dogs. Many sweeet stories about the loved between people and their pets. Some dogs saved lives. Dogs helped people get through difficult times. There were service dogs, who visited people in nursing homes and hospitals. There were dogs who found their homes, by showing up at their doors. This is a nice book of kind stories.

You can learn a lot from them!

I would have given this 3.5 stars if I could. I enjoyed reading the stories about the dogs. It did seem like too many of the stories were about stray dogs that nobody wanted. I've read enough of the Chicken Soup books that I knew what to expect and I was not disappointed.

I really liked some of the stories in this book (like my pal Charmaine Hammond's on page 260), but being that I do a lot of animal advocacy work... I know of so many better more interesting stories.

Maybe I'm jaded, but this just didn't measure up to the earlier Chicken Soup's.
