This was a great pictorial overview of life in ancient Rome. Very generic of course but a good introduction for a kid or for an adult who knows little about the topic.
A book with good digestible information on various aspects of daily life in Ancient Rome. This is good for a first pass through Roman History on a classical homeschooling cycle. I did a read aloud 1 or 2 chapters at a time with my K child as we do our first past through ancient history to give them a general sense of what life was like in the Roman Empire. I might give it as an option for an older child to read on the second pass through in the Logic stage, when they are 10 - 12 or so.
This is more of a "culture" book than a history book as much of the information is not tied to specific dates or places -- this is a huge lack and the reason for 3 stars instead of 4. "Ancient Rome" is a phrase that refers to a thousand-year time span. Surely daily life changed during that time. In the chapter on the Coliseum, the book refuses to provide a year for when it was built. I mean really, dates are not toxic.
I found this book to be a useful resource for ancient civilization research for elementary-aged students. It offers a lot of insight into the Ancient Roman culture.
