The Visual Investor, Second Edition breaks down technical analysis into terms that are accessible to even individual investors. Aimed at the typical investor--such as the average CNBC viewer--this book shows investors how to follow the ups and downs of stock prices by visually comparing the charts, without using formulas or having a necessarily advanced understanding of technical analysis math and jargon. Murphy covers all the fundamentals, from chart types and market indicators to sector analysis and global investing, providing examples and easy-to-read charts so that any reader can become a skilled visual investor.
John J. Murphy is an American financial market analyst and is considered to be the Father of Inter-market Analysis. He received an award for outstanding contribution to global technical analysis by the International Federation of Technical Analysts.
I had a basic idea of technical analysis, or Visual Investing as Mr. Murphy refers to it, prior to starting this book. I found the book to be a great description of the main ideas of charting and their application. I would recommend it to anybody wanting to learn about reading charts and improving their trading skills.
This is a very good book for people who are learning how to use technical indicators, read charts to see trends and patterns, and look for leading indicators using commodities, bond futures, relative strength, etc. I'm going to read this book again after I've had a chance to digest the first reading.
Good book overall. A little outdated however the middle part of the book demonstrates how to use all those indicators of charts you never know what it means. The book is full of examples so 300 pages is actually more like 150 of reading.
I heard John Murphy speak at ChartCon 2012. His presentation on intermarket analysis was excellent so I bought a couple of his books. This book is divided into four sections. The first two sections provide an excellent introduction to technical analysis. Section 3 contained some of the material he presented at ChartCon. It briefly covers a wide range of market analysis topics. Ironically, it was this material that peaked my interest during the conference but I found it harder to understand in writing. Lastly, section 4 addressed Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds. All good stuff if you plan on investing in the stock market.
Mr. Murphy is very knowledgable and a good writer. This book is an excellent introduction to technical analysis. I'm looking forward to reading his other book, Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets. It's a 500+ page book with a Study Guide.
I would like this book better if it was a little bit newer. Also, the graphs need to be in color. They were difficult to read many instances. I like the book it did give me a bunch of tips. Was worth the money.
This was the first financial book I picked up. The author did a great job with language, concepts and the flow. Would have been great with recent data as examples though.
A good, but brief, introduction to technical analysis of the markets. If you have any understanding of it prior to the book you may not get much out of it, but if you are new to the subject then this is a good book to start with
