Flagship of naval heroes, the Constitution is the oldest warship still afloat in the world. This account of America's most famous warship and her possible restoration (for her 200th birthday) features rare paintings, some never before published, and new paintings, drawings, and plans. 200 illustrations.
This is a book about the USS Constitution itself. After a few chapters summarizing its history, the rest of the book discusses its present (1993) state and gives recommendations for the 1995 repair work. My edition has a summary of this work written in 1997, the first time the Constitution had sailed for decades. Gillmer manages a good mix of the human and physical history of the ship, with a focus on preservation and restoration.[return]I picked this up in anticipation of a visit to the USS Constitution this summer and can't wait to go!
