This series has promise, but...

I'm writing this not having seen the anime or heard much about the manga, just my thoughts on the 1st book. That being said, in the "transported to another world" genre, it has some catching up to do.

The world-building and character development, usually heavy in the first few novels of any series, was a bit lacking and bland. From my perspective, other than the protagonist and one additional character, it failed to establish the much-needed connections or relationships to engage and resonate with the reader.

The story, so far, seems rushed. Multiple times, I found myself turning back to see if I had maybe missed a page or a panel, but nope. I think the first volume could have stretched out into at least two full volumes to give more depth to the story and characters. I would get excited about getting to an action sequence, but when it came, it would be short and abruptly end without enough follow-up.

The whole idea behind the series is what made me pick it up. It went in a different direction than I was expecting, which is good, and still has me interested.

The overall art is great, but it comes across clustered and choppy in places. For example, one panel I had to examine closely to separate the characters from the background art. The panel positioning and setup also confuse me sometimes. I understand what the artist is trying to do, but it feels somewhat forced in many areas.

My biggest qualm so far is how the art depicts the use of magic. It is visually subtle, again, making me look closer at the panels before and after, seeing if I missed something.

In the end, it was interesting enough for me to continue the series. I have hope that the story will slow down, the action sequences will be more elaborate, the characters will become more relatable and rounded out, and the art will become less muddled.

So if you've read The Rising of the Shield Hero, Volume 1: The Manga Companion, then you've effectively read a more interesting version of this story. Even though they're written by completely different people the story is beat for beat, 3 random people are summoned to a magical world where they all have a unique power and must help the king defeat the demon lord. Now I know most Isekai are like this but this genuinely felt like a copy and paste, like there were minor differnces.

It's not until you get into the training portion of this that things get a bit different, throwing the guy in the wilderness and expecting him to surive was honestly great, I had a lot of fun with that concept. You add stuff like giant snakes and bears and wow, it was so good.

The whole concept of being a healer is a bit overdone as it was pointed out in this they're kind of uselss unless used as back up, however these ones can heal themselves which is a great idea. It means we can get more out of him instead of him just helping out he can hopefully do some damage? I think this is one of the better Isekai and even though it's so simialir to Shield Hero, it stands on it's own and you can get a lot of enjoyment from it.

My problem with this story is the teacher of the MC.

I get that she has a traumatic past and that’s why she’s so rough on the MC.

And I get that the MC being this amazing and just right for the job guy puts up with it, cause the training will keep him alive.

It’s just that I hate it.

Like I’m sure I’ve read and even liked stories like this, but this story, written this way, it just pisses me off.

I’ve been told that they address the whole her torturing the MC, but I can’t find any stratification in it, cause she doesn’t actually face any consequences for it. And is forgiven.

The best way I can put it, is watching a veteran soldier beat a child and then say look they’re able to face the world and it’s hardships and the child thanks them cause they ultimately survived because of it. And I’m left here watching and say “Yeah, but at what cost?”.

Usato is a student wishing for more! He is surprised when the student president and vice president help him out and start talking to him on their way home. Suddenly they are summoned to another world as heroes to help stop the demon lord!! Except Usato was summoned by accident! When it’s found out that he has healing magic, Rose takes him for her rescue team! Will Usato survive her training?

Built up the current world nicely and got me rather interested in the main group of characters!
I'm looking forward to seeing what else this series will have to offer!
