EC Law: Text, Cases, and Materials

Rate this book
The study of EC law is clearly of central and growing importance within the UK and beyond. A knowledge of EC law is essential within courses on constitutional and administrative law while many substantive law subjects, from competition law to discrimination law, are increasingly affected by
developments in Europe. While there are a numebr of texts dealing both with the instituional and substantive law of the EC, this has not been matched by the production of good, general casebooks on the subject. Here, for the first time, is a comprehensive and wide-ranging case book on EC law which
may also serves as a prime textbook, embracing all major aspects of EC law, of both an institutional and substantive nature. The flexible structure of the book makes it suitable for use in a variety of EC courses, whether the emphasis is on the institutional law of the Community, or on certain
substantive aspects thereof. It may be used as a primary textbook in the study of a given subject or as a supplement to an existing text as well.
Making use of the full range of the available literature, including case law, Treaty provisions and subsequent legislation, while also drawing upon relevant secondary literature from legal periodicals and the writings of political scientists, economists and other scholars who have studied the EC,
the student is provided with a body of material both vast in scope and thorough in detail. Up-to-date documentation emanating from the organs of the Community is included as well, even where this does not take the form of completed legislation, in order to heighten the student's understanding and
awareness of the most current dynamics of policymaking in the EC.
Textual explanations and evaluations of the many differing areas of EC law are related by the authors in detail, facilitating the use of the book as a primary text while enabling students to comprehend particular topics even where the book is used as an accompaniment to an existing text. Throughout
the exegetical and interpretive sections of the text, the underlying theme that the EC must be related to the overall development of the Community as a whole is explored in a variety of ways within the discussion of the institutional and substantive law of the EC.

A good textbook with all the essential information and important EU cases. On the downside it goes into great detail and it can be a lot to read and understand, perhaps just a little too much information provided. However, you do get used to being able to find what you need. I find it better to have more information than not enough but that might not be the case for everyone.

THIS IS THE BEST ALL AROUNDER FOR EU LAW.
Craig and De Burca's book on EU law is THE canonical book on EU law. The cases selected and excerpted are all entirely relevant and the structure of the book is also solid and logical. I had the privilege to meet De Burca, such a brilliant author and teacher!

Their book is widely available so check your law library if your budget is limited or if you want to verify before you buy!

I later went on to write my own book on EU law, My book compares the EU and US constitutional structures and brings more ideological and teleological considerations.

if you are a practitioner I recommend De Burca and Craig's book even above my own for your time is tight you are not looking for deep insights just a solid understanding of black letter law. If you are a politico then in a shameless act of self promotion I recommend my own book (which is super cheap as an ebook and reasonable in print). Basically I wrote my book thinking about the NAFTA the Andean Pact and MERCOSUR, but also about the CIS and ASEAN. These sort of transnational trade blocs are vital and will persist despite renewed great power conflict. People would rather do business than make war. EU is more or less the model for all these transnational trading blocs.

DeBurca and Craig's book is a must read. It's canoncal.

have the 7th edition and it is BEAUTIFUL. very straightforward structure which i like. sometimes this book would get confusing but i think it’s more because eu law after 4 hours straight just becomes one big jumble. easy enough to understand. one star docked because it’s too expensive 🙄

Out of all the textbooks I used for EU law during universiry, this was the least accessible and often was very difficult to understand a topic without looking through other textbooks.

However, it did include everything I needed to know so not the worst textbook. I just wish it hadn't been such a chore to read.

I only bought it because it was on the required reading list.

good stuff. understanding the EU is somewhat labor intensive for the US-oriented attorney; there's different concepts and mechanisms, of course, and the natures of the respective animals are different. damned cool. text is useful, thick, small-printed, &c.

Unfriendly tone, complicating an already difficult area. Was recommended course material but I bought a different one as I couldn't stand how it was written.
