The woman who took possession of my heart from the first moment I saw her. I gave it to her willingly, because I knew she would always treasure it, just as I would cherish hers. The vows we shared, I took seriously. For years, she was the sole reason I breathed.
But then tragedy struck. Something happened that I never expected. My love for Cat never wavered, despite the darkness that touched our lives.
Scarlett.
The woman I met by accident. She became a temptation I couldn’t ignore and would never be able to give up. She tugged at the strings still attached to my heart, threatening to rip it from Cat’s grasp and to take it for her own.
Now I’m split between the two. Loving one keeps the light on in my ever darkening world and fills the void of sadness. Loving the other shrouds me in shadows, threatening to consume me, but giving me something I can’t live without.
Choosing between them is impossible, so I’ll keep them both.

Going into this my anticipation levels were extremely high feeling that all the hurt from the blurb would reign down on me. And it did! GO INTO THIS BLIND If this is your first taste of a dark book turn around! This is not for the faint of heart, it's not light and fluffy with puppy dogs and kittens. This is DARK and went down a path even I wasn’t prepared for.
How is this even possible that this is Jessie’s debut novel! If I didn’t know I would swear she had many books under her belt! With this being her first, imagine what her next book is going to be like!
Hunter, from street urchin to a man with an abundant bank account, a thriving business called Slate, and is in partnership with his best friend. An exclusive club only catering to the elite. This man has many layers, like peeling the top layers of an onion, delve deeper and he's got layers upon layers.
How far will one man go for the woman he loves?
Caterina aka Cat, is a fictional thriller author, she’d endured sooooo much pain and suffering, more than anyone person should have to endure, and even through the worst of her days she still got up each day and survived. 💔 irrevocably scarred. Irrevocably damaged.
This book has many twists and turns, dark, emotional, so please if you have triggers heed them, obliterating my comfort zone to smithereens, this goes where not many authors would go. I myself found it hard to read. I took myself out of the pages I was reading and put myself in the heroine's place and oh god the images flashing through my mind were vivid. Real, raw, realistic. 😭
This was like a train wreck, you don’t want to look but curiosity gets the better of you. Once I started this book, I couldn’t put it down, even when some parts became unbearable my eyes couldn’t tear themselves away from the pages. * Teaser used is off the authors facebook page.
I thought the blurb was talking about Catherine as in that was her POV and likewise with Scarlet didn’t see hunter in the middle keeping them both as a side piece. With all the crazy ass story I wouldn’t be surprised if they both turned out to be the same women with a Personality disorder If not then it would have complimented the story better anyway 💋

First of all, I can’t believe that this is the author's debut novel. The writing is flawless. Would I personally categorize this as a dark romance? I'm not sure. There's a love story in here, but at the core, for me, this read more like a psychological thriller. And once I realized what I was actually reading, I couldn't look away. This is truly masterfully done. I won’t go into the plot and do suggest that you go in blind. There are a lot of triggers in here, but the love story between Hunter and Cat is really beautiful if quite unconventional. The twists had me at the edge of my seat till the very end. There's a LOT of steam here, maybe a bit too much at times. But it all works in the context of the story. I'll definitely be looking for more from this author!
One of the best books I have read this year. This was a masterpiece. I got angry, sad, cried buckets, smiled, this was pulling all my emotions and then left me speechless. I don't want to go into much, but this is a must-read, a beautiful heartwrenching masterpiece.
If you can get through the first half of this book, the payoff is worth it. Some issues I had with pacing and inner monologues going long, but I enjoyed it.
When you think you’re prepared for this debut story. YOU ARE NOT!
Firstly take a good hard look at those trigger warnings. If you’ve never dipped into the dark side of romance, this book isn’t for you. Honestly this story isn’t for the faint hearted. It will chew you up and spit you out.
This story had so many twists and turns, I wasn’t on the edge of my seat, I was pacing the floor. At the same time not believing my eyes as everything unfolds. So dark and twisted!
My kindle almost didn’t survive! Can’t wait to read more by this new author.
Well...this wasn't quite what I was expecting lol. First of all, check the TW because this book deals with some heavy subject matter, and it's hard to read about. Some of it is straight up heartbreaking, but you do find yourself rooting for the ways Hunter exacts revenge on people. Those can be disturbing and shocking too, but in a way that feels justified.
As much as Hunter has a dark side, his well of love is never ending. It's actually super impressive. I kind of wish some things had been revealed later in the book, but I thought this was a good read, though not easy.
This book is so very disturbing that it literally made me feel ill at times. This is the darkest romantic thriller I’ve ever read. And I don’t mean dark in a good morally black way. I mean this was hard to handle. If you’re a parent, I would not read this. The details are deranged. I’m a parent and was thoroughly sick. And then I never hated a male character lead so much in my life until about 50%. But, I couldn’t put the damn thing down. I read it in one day. I feel like I’m mentally unstable for reading the whole thing. And what does that make the author for writing this? Seriously, if there EVER was a time to consider trigger warnings, this book is it. I gave it five stars, not because of the main plot, but because it was great writing and I couldn’t put it down. The one thing I will say, is I have never read, or experienced in real life, a man so devoted to his wife. So freaking in love, even after 20 years. I know I just spoiled a bunch by my words but this book is like 2 years old. Also, I was thinking the person responsible that it ended up being was who it was about 60% through, but the circumstances were very deranged. Amazing writing though. Also, for the love of God, do not go into this blindly like I did.
This is dark romance following Hunter and Catalina. This book has so many twists and turns that keep you sucked in and quickly turning every page!! This is such a emotional, heartbreaking and powerful read! Definitely have to have the heart and mind set for how dark this book gets and all the dark topics that it covers but it's done beautifully! I really adore Hunter and how he is with Catalina especially with everything that these two endure!! Omg so freaking good!!
What a fantastic debut novel from Jessie Emerson. There are content warnings at the beginning of the book which I would definitely take note of. Despite some of the content I personally wouldn't class this as a dark romance compared to some I've read. The story follows Hunter and Catalina a married couple who are devoted to each other. I don't want to say too much about the storyline as this is a book that you are best to go into blind. This felt like a psychological thriller that unfolds the further you read. You can feel the love that flows between Cat and Hunter which at times had me scratching my head trying to figure out what was actually happening. I was constantly second guessing what I was reading. I liked the way the story unfolded with all twists and revelations . This is an author I will be watching with interest.
Wow! I’m so glad a friend led me this way! I’ve never been into dark twisted books but have been reading them more and more lately. This one took my breath away! Cat and hunters story is amazing! There are multiple take ur breath away moments that I was not expecting! Love love! Cannot wait to see what else this author releases!! But please take the trigger warnings seriously! You also won’t regret reading this! Now I’m left with what do I read from here?
This is very much a revenge story. All is not as it seems in the first half of the book and then it takes a different direction. (I did not like where this went) but that is just a personal thing. Still love this author.
3 stars 🌶️ 🌶️🌶️ This is not a happy book. It’s filled with grief, loss, trauma. Please check the trigger warning. I did like the story and the main characters are well written.
I'm at a loss for words. I really need some time to gather my thoughts for this review. At first, I was absolutely furious, questioning why he was treating her this way. But once I hit 38%, everything clicked into place, and my heart shattered for them. I couldn't help but cry—what an emotional journey!
Notice to all readers: This is the same book as the one written by Alex Grayson. So if you can't find it under Jessie Emerson, you WILL find it under Alex's name on Kindle Unlimited.
Beautiful Chaos was about Hunter St, James, the co-owner of Slate, an exclusive nightclub, and his wife Caterina "Cat" St. James, a successful fictional author.
TW/CW from the author: "Please be advised, this is not a light and fluffy read. There are some situations that may be triggering. I highly suggest heeding the warning below.
This book contains scenes that may depict, mention, or discuss: assault, attempted murder, attempted rape, blood, cheating, child abuse, child death, death, hostages, incest, murder, pedophilia, physical abuse, poisoning, PTSD, rape, self-harm, sexual abuse, sexual assault, attempted suicide, torture."
Side Note: This was not a book about romance, but rather one of enduring love that had been tried, tested, and proven on multiple occasions. Sometimes it was a rough road to get to the happier stages, but each one showed how true love can overcome everything tossed in its path. This was a story of how a man and woman went to the brink of insanity and found their way back to each other.
Hunter and Cat had been together since her third year of college after being introduced to each other by her BFF, Megan. A year later, they were married. Several years later, they experienced a life-altering incident that had a major impact on not just them, but everyone around them.
This story was full of angst, drama, crushing pain, a tremendous amount of conflict, and a boatload of revenge that was done in epic proportions. The emotional rollercoaster had all the usual twists and turns, along with a few unsuspected loops and flips that kept the reader glued to the pages. This was one of those "unputdownable" books that, even though it was 41 chapters long, this particular reader rarely walked away from it until I reached the end.
Both of the main characters were fully developed and mature, with a ton of room for growth. The secondary characters were just as well written, and the comeuppance was meted out to the satisfaction of even the biggest critic.
I wasn't certain about reading this book because some of the reviews and talk kept mentioning cheating being one of the tropes of the story. However, I set aside my usual reluctance and read it anyway, and I'm very glad I did because...well let's just say the rumors of cheating were greatly exaggerated.
I gave this story a five-star rating and added it to my Keeper for the Shelves collection because it absolutely deserved both merits. I will also be purchasing a physical copy for my library. Don't be afraid to read this book. You won't regret the time spent doing so.
Jessie hooks you into the deepest, often depraved aspects of humanity. It draws you in and evokes such acts of compassion and tenderness and empathy. This book is no different. I went through hate, happiness, anger, love, despair, despair, despair, some more anger and hate and overall compassion and empathy all the way through. As with TM Frazier and Alex Grayson I feel the depravity that gets brought to light serves a purpose of enlightening us to what happens around us in the shadows. It brings to light aspects of humanity that we might not see , understand or fully grasp. Both sides of the coin. I am drawn to these books but for my mental health I take a good break in between reading them. They do find themselves in honour positions in my book collections.
I do not know how on earth people survive this kind of trauma but it's real and it happens in our societies all the time. War ravaged countries most probably see even more of it and there is the question, what can we do to help.
Something in me says Empathy and Compassion goes a long way. Being a less judgemental person overall could also help.
And I know my review is not at all discussing the story line of the book but more the feelings it evokes in me. This book is best read “blind” . It's going to shake you and transform your thinking.
**IT'S BRUTAL.** I'm not saying this lightly. ITS FUCKING BRUTAL. You do not read this if you can not handle the topics involved. It's not a light-Dark romance. It doesn't sugar coat Trauma. It's not a light-Trauma. It's hard and awful.
Brilliant Book and if you had the willpower not to turn pages to see what happens ahead of reading it, will shock you and then it will also heal you.
Now take a breath and go read the trigger warnings and then if it's something you can read I recommend it.
I love dark reads. So when I read the blurb my attention was caught and what sealed the deal was the word dark. So I knew to expect dark but I absolutely didn’t expect what I got. I’m still reeling and stunned. I’m not sure how to write about the plot and storyline without inadvertently giving something away. So I’ll just say it again I was stunned and my mind reeling. I was in shock. I can say it was extremely emotional and painful. I freaking cried ugly and uncontrollable. My heart and soul were devastated and I took some breaks from reading at certain points. I also couldn’t believe what I was reading. Went back and reread to make sure I was reading correctly. Ms. Emerson broke me. I have never been broken by a book before. Yes I’ve read some unforgettable stories. But this one did me in. The author’s writing is very good. The story is told in duel points of view. I got to live in the heads of the characters. I got to feel their emotions and their feelings. And I must say the characters are truly phenomenal. Again so I don’t unintentionally give something away I won’t go into details of why they are phenomenal. But after you read this book you will know why I found the characters so remarkable. With each page I read and turned the more I was gripped. The more I was abhorred. The more I was ripped to pieces. Even when I got to the end and read the epilogue by heart and soul was still fractured. Ms. Emerson may have put the broken pieces together. But there are still cracks. So I’ll say she one hundred percent did her job as an author. Great writing, unique and unpredictable storyline and characters that I will never forget. I will definitely be looking out for future books by her.
This is the debut novel by Jessie Emerson. This is a very dark and twisted tale about Hunter and Caterina. I love dark romance books but must admit that I even found it hard to read at times, so please do heed the trigger warnings as the author touches on some very sensitive topics. The blurb had piqued my interest but I didn’t expect it to turn out quite so disturbing. It is gripping and shocking but also a stunning love story. Told in dual POV to help the reader understand all that is happening.
The first half of the book introduces us to all the characters involved in the story. Hunter grew up on the streets and at college met Silas. Together they started Slate, an exclusive members club and it was there one night he first saw Caterina and their love story started. Caterina is a fictional thriller author and the love of Hunter’s life. They are married and have been together twenty years. Five years ago they experienced a horrendous tragedy and this is the cruz of the story.
The second half answers all the questions and concludes this emotional and heartbreaking tale. It felt like I was reading one of Cat’s psychological thriller novels a lot of the time. Unpredictable with lots of twists and turns for these two fantastic characters. It is also very steamy as these two can’t keep their hands of each other. The author writes in a way that you will feel all that the couple go through. I loved how Hunter’s love shines through all the darkness and how he had the resources to deal with everything. If you like to read something different to the norm then this is the book for you.
🫶🏼 HEA: Yes! ✖️ Multiple POVs: Yes 🤥 Cheating: No 🎭 OW/OM Drama: No
This is NOT my first book by this author.
WHAT DID I JUST READ? Nothing is what it seems in this book until 50ish% of the book when you figure out exactly what is going on. But up until that point it's hyper emotional due to what Hunter does. But don't be fooled because the last part of this book is just as hyper emotional as the first part just a much different emotion.
This book was so refreshing in so many different ways. The characters both had a lot of development and I felt the book wasn't rushed nor did I feel like it dragged. I feel the author gave both MCs the chance to heal.
There were so many parts of this book I didn't see coming but once I figured out what was happening it all made sense. I did see the plot twist coming but it was still a good one.
I cannot stress how dark and heavy this book is. There were parts of this book I had to stop and take a break from but thankfully there is an hea which I am so thankful for. These two characters needed one after everything they went through.
I highly recommend Alex's books because she has unpredictable twists and turns in her books which I love because she always surprises me at least once in her books.
This is the debut novel from the author, and it is one impactful and intense read. If I could give more than five stars, I would. This is one melding of a dark romance and psychological thriller to the nth degree as readers dive deep into the lives of Hunter and Caterina (aka Cat.) I must CAUTION anyone who wants to read this as there is some content that may be triggering because it is very dark and heartbreaking. Hunter, for appearance’s sake, seems to have it all; a wife that he adores and a great family, a best friend and business partner and the respect of his peers. However, looks can be deceiving and all that glitters is not gold creating one heck of a dilemma for him. Cat is a writer by trade, and she adores her husband. Unfortunately, she experienced something so horrific and now suffers with post-traumatic stress disorder. Everyone has ways of dealing with situations and the author does an incredible job of outlining the struggles and vulnerabilities of these characters. Your heart literally bleeds for these two and what they have endured. The suffering that they were subjected to is unfathomable and yet they persevere. While somewhat unconventional, this is a well written, beautifully dark read with twists that shines a light on one’s mental acuity and how the mind can protect under extreme duress. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

This book is just as described, very dark and twisted. The author is completely upfront about the type of story it is and that there are triggers. Be aware, they are definitely included and you need to take her warning seriously.
I very rarely don’t discuss the characters but I feel everybody needs to read this themselves because the author did a great job of building up each character's profile… so I suppose I did explain a little about the characters after all. 😆
I found it a little hard to get into the story for a bit. The pace was a tad slow and although a reasonable amount of important information is gained, I was wondering when the story would really grab me… it did! Oh boy, did it ever. I am amazed by the intricate and creative plotting. This story has amazing twists and turns, it takes you by surprise and I love an unpredictable story. I look forward to reading more by this author.
This book has taken up so much space in my head since I’ve read it, I can’t stop thinking about it.
The book is about a married couple in their late 30’s, this is what instantly stood out for me and made me read it.
This is one of the darkest trauma books I’ve read so far and I’m a dark romance reader enthusiast. I didn’t realize I had any triggers until reading this book, now I know I have at least one.
Let me start by saying that the love between the FMC and MMC was so utterly devastatingly beautiful. The lengths the MMC went through for his wife…. Ugh there are no words that will do it justice.
The FMC and MMC were well written and thought out characters that kept me engaged the entire book. While some of the plot twists were predictable the bigger part I DID NOT SEE COMING!!!! It kept me at the edge of my seat and knocked me on my ass all at the same time.
*** spoiler****
The past trauma that was the catalyst for the story was really hard to read and I ALMOST DNF’D when the book went into explicit detail. The couples kids were killed in front of the FMC and in an extremely violent way. This is now one of my triggers I have found that i have up until this book I thought I had none ( horrific death of young children/ babies that is depicted explicitly)
Definitely worth a read if you enjoy dark romance I highly recommend!!!!

The moment I read the blurb, I knew what it was gonna be, how things would tie up together with our main characters. The moment new characters were introduced I guessed who's gonna be what (iykyk) if you're a Neuro divergent person like me, chances are you'll predict everything by 40% , I even knew who the antagonist was what kept me hooked was the suspense of the motive and it was a little underwhelming but I liked the fact that I couldn't predict it, also I wanted the antagonist to suffer sooo much more, like antagonist's torture scene I needed it for like 2-3 chapters and months long but still what was written was good. MMC might be the best book husband ever, all the 5 stars are for him . And 5trillion stars for our FMC, and many many many warm hugs, I fell in love with her strength ,resilience as well as her vulnerability. If you're of strong heart then this is a definitely yessss go ahead read!!!!! ⚠️This is a very emotionally draining read. Once you finish you'll have to process a lot, so have something warm , cushy and comfortable ready for that, maybe go get a hug from a loved one if that helps. But do be prepared for something comforting after the read to process your emotions. The Ending is a happy one and does soothe your emotions a little bit still there's a lot to unpack in there!
Holy SCHAMOLYYYYY!!!! This book is a flipping masterpiece!!! I can typically see things coming from a mile away, but never in my wildest dreams, did I predict this outcome!!! To say that I am blown away is a huge understatement. I just … WOW!!!
This debut novel by Jessie Emerson is extraordinary. I can only hope that every book and story that she pumps out after Beautiful Chaos will be just as remarkable, although this will be hard to top. Not only was the story beautifully written, the characters are top notch. The love and devotion that Hunter gives to Cat is what love stories are made of. Every woman wants the love and marriage that Hunter provides. They are meant for each other and I don’t believe anyone would “get” each other like they do. The trauma that Cat has endured would have taken me under. I would not have wanted to live. I wouldn’t want to relive the nightmares, but Hunter is there for her every step of the way. He will get her through this, no matter what it takes. Love conquers all!!
If you are wavering on one-clicking Beautiful Chaos, let me be the first to tell you to click that button. This story is easily one of my top 5 of 2023. Pick up the book and then thank me later. 5 solidly amazing stars. Well done!!!
Hunter St. James is a self-made man, has a beautiful wife and a seemingly blessed life, but not everything that shines is gold. He and his partner run business in a rather different way and his family life is anything but perfect. Caterina St. James is a thriller writer and loves her husband dearly, but she suffers from severe PTSD and it’s up to Hunter to ensure her safety and happiness by any means possible. This book is a tough read and touches a lot of dark subjects. I highly recommend any potential readers to pay attention to the disclaimer as I almost quit before reaching even half of the story and this is not my first dark read, but it definitely got to me. That said, this story is quite a different love story and I didn’t see any of the major plot twists coming which makes it a winner in my book. I felt for the characters and their exceedingly complicated situation, there were times I wanted to throat punch Hunter to then hug him and make his pain go away, but my heart went mostly after Caterina time and again. Her suffering knows no bounds and the darkness surrounding the couple is the stuff nightmares are made of. Good writing, great characters and an unexpected plot, make Beautiful Chaos a worthy read if this is up your alley.
