Alex Martinez is not looking for love—he doesn't believe he knows how. He believes his station in life was determined by his birth into poverty. Proud and powerful in his neighborhood, he knows who he is and where he stands.
Until Lola walks into his life.
Alex can’t help falling for the beauty with piercing blue eyes and a bright personality. But she is his cousin’s best friend and out of his league. They come from different worlds, and Alex knows Lola deserves more than his broken past.
Tired of the shallow sorority friends and the lifestyle she once led, Lola is looking for deeper, more meaningful connections. She thought she’d found this in her new best friend, Toni. Then, she meets Alex, Toni’s cousin. Lola finds herself drawn to him and his fierce loyalty to and protectiveness over his family. But she also sees the softer, more vulnerable side of Alex.
Just as their relationship begins, the past comes sneaking back in and threatens to drive a deeper wedge between them. Can their relationship withstand Alex’s past becoming his present?
I received a free copy from Goodreads New Adult Book Club for the promise of an honest review.
This was a slow burner, I didn’t really get into it till about half way, but then I was hooked.
It was different to most books I’ve read. Was more about the story and background that the smutty love scenes which I felt was an appropriate approach for the story.
Was nice to have a bit of a thriller aspect to it, which most new adult books say thriller buy it isn’t. Was well written and not overly soppy which I enjoyed.
This was my first book by Tori Alvarez and it sure won't be the last! Tragically Beautiful is the second book in the Graffiti Hearts series but it can be read as a standalone. Since i haven't read book one i found it really easy to get into, i look forward to going back and reading Toni and Garrett's story! I loved their close-ness in the group. I really loved Alex, there was just something about him that drew me in almost instantly. Lola i loved her too, she was so easy to like, i can't find a fault in her! I really liked this book so much! I'm so glad i got to meet Alex and Lola!
It was a tragically beautiful story, but I wasn’t fully invested in their story compared to Garrett and Toni.
Obviously the situation Alex had to deal with I wouldn’t know how to go about, but I just felt it was kind of cheesy with the way it turned out. I’m also not a huge fan of surprise pregnancies. Nonetheless, I’m really enjoying this series.
Bad boy Alex Martinez has met Lola, the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately he believes she shouldn’t be dragged down into his life. What would she see in a high school dropout with no future? Alex was taking care of his grandmother, cousin, and brother at an early age and found the quickest way to make money and keep his family safe was to be a drug dealer. He has since left that lifestyle but it has now caught up to him again and pulled him back in. There is no way he wants his family and Lola to know what he is doing and distances himself. Lola has other ideas though and she is determined to make it work with Alex. This is a second book in a series but can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read the first one yet but am looking forward to it and finding out the backstory of other characters in this book. If you like a bad boy romance (although Alex has a heart of gold) this one is for you!
This is the second book in the Graffiti Heart series, which can be read as a standalone where we dive in Alex and Lola's story with the characters of the previous book present too.
Alex is rough and sexy who gives a confident and demanding vibe. He commands attention and definitely knows how to use it. Lola is bubbly, beautiful, stubborn and thoughtful. Both of them complete polar opposites in looks, personality and status, but the thing they have most common is protecting and fighting for the ones they love.
I enjoyed reading this, but the thing I loved the absolute most is how the significance of the title is mentioned in the book. We know what "Tragically Beautiful" means but what it means in this story is what we're going to know. I liked how the characters were portrayed, giving us a back story along with how they aren't perfect. The sweet cuddling scenes, the passionate romance, the sharing of insecurities and the protective manner; all made this a great book.
Would give this 3.5 stars.
•••••••••••••••••••••••• I've recieved an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tragically beautiful is definitely the perfect description for the amazing story I just read.
Damn!
This book wrecked me in the most wonderful way and put my pieces back again on the same page. I couldn’t put it down, I feel like I need more!
First of all, I don’t think I’ve read a hero like Alex before. This tough, intimidating guy but not in an Alpha Male way, but because of the tragic circumstances he had to go through since the beginning of his life and making him impossible to reach! He has to harden his skin so much and so sacrificially for the well-being of the people he loved. He’s the type of person that inspires you safety and trust just by being around.
And Lola? 😭 We all need a best friend like her! I thought about it since the first book, she never gave up on Toni and always showed up no matter how hard it was. Seeing her breaking Alex’s walls with her light, positivity and sweetness was like a breath of fresh air to my heart. She was exactly what Alex needed to finally see himself for who he truly was.
I loved how Lola was so humble and brave when she was confronted with her privilege, not in a condescending way but with all the unbreakable love she had for Alex and the rest of the family and the willingness to use her privilege as a blessing for a greater good.
This quote was the moment I broke into tears: “Soy el desastre que más te adora.” —I am the disaster that adores you the most— sums up the story pretty well.
I am in love with this couple!
I love Tori’s raw and poignant storytelling. She has a very clear message to tell and the way she’s putting it out through Romance is captivating, honest and touching.
I enjoyed this one! Alex grew up in a troubled household in a tough neighborhood, learning from a young age to protect himself and his family. So when his cousin Toni’s friend Lola catches his eye, he instinctively tries to protect her too — specifically from him. But Lola really doesn’t want that kind of protection and ultimately their pull is too strong for Alex to resist. In a foreseeable yet still absorbing series of events, Alex’s past comes back to haunt them all, risking life and love all at once. While the conclusion left some things a bit unfinished, the part that really mattered was highly satisfying. All in all a good read!
Tragically Beautiful is the second book in the Graffiti Heart Series and can be read as a stand alone. It is narrated in first person through the eyes of Alex and Lola who come from two completely different backgrounds. Alex is portrayed as a no-hoper bad boy who had a rough upbringing. While Lola is portrayed as a fun and bubbly sorority girl.
I really enjoyed the storyline and there were times when I found it to be sad. I found the characters to be relatable and I could see parts of myself in them. I really like how Alex and Lola are polar opposites of each other in every sense. Alvarez has done a great job at creating two broken, lost and unfulfilled characters who fit together so perfectly. Their relationship reminds me of yin and yang because when the two opposites come together they make a whole.
I know that this going to sound so cliché but this story was tragically beautiful.
I recieved an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion.
A beautiful heartwarming read! I loved this book. Alex was everything I wanted him to be and the way he loved so hard made me swoon. He cared so deeply for his girl and also his family. And I hung on every word of this book, waiting for the tension to take over. I love the deep character arc's that Tori creates. Her characters are far from cliched cookie-cutter ones, and that is refreshing. It was also great seeing the characters from book one, and how they had developed from their stories. Can't wait for the next book!
I received a free advanced copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Alejandro Martinez! I have been crushing on him since I first read about him in Beautiful Collision. Tall, dark, and brooding. Yes! I am here for all of it!
Alex is a drug dealing, overbearing, bad boy destined for a life on the streets nonetheless Lola sees past his hard exterior and straight to the heart of gold he keeps hidden away. What he had never expected was to fall for anyone let alone his cousin’s best friend. A blonde blue eyed beauty who doesn’t belong in his world.
This story was everything I had hoped for and the end made my heart burst! My fingers are crossed for Javie’s book next!
Another great work from Tori! I loved seeing a different side you characters you met in the first book and seeing how characters from the first book have grown. It was fun to see more and deeper into the minds and homes of these characters. I'm excited to see what will happen next!
Tragically Beautiful was my kind of read! Strong alpha male, confident heroine, angst, sweet and sexy love scenes, strong family ties and happily ever after. The story line and character build was real and believable-nothing far fetched here. Didn’t actually realize this was the 2nd book in a series. It can be read as a stand-alone but looking forward to reading book one and hopefully a future story on Javie!! Completely enjoyed my first read by Tori Alvarez thru www.voraciousreadersonly.com and look forward to more….
"I call you 'amor' because you are the only woman who has brought me to my knees. You are the only one I have ever wanted to spend time with. I told you before, but I will remind you in case you forgot. Tu ya tienes mi corazon. You already have my heart.”
Tragically Beautiful is just that: beautiful. What a love story! It's a wrong-side-of-the-tracks, opposites attract contemporary romance with real depth, stakes, and emotion.
With Alex, a Latinx man with a troubled past, an under-represented voice was amplified. Just like with Toni, the heroine from Beautiful Collision (book one of this series), I found the perspective interesting and important. Those two cousins, Toni and Alex, are fighting for what comes easily to others. Their HEAs take work and faith, inside and out.
I was immediately drawn in to this story and its characters. I was rooting so hard for Alex and Lola, and so terrified of the mountains in their way! Thankfully, this story has a happily ever after, and it is as beautiful as the rest of the story!
Alex has always been the protector of his brother Javie and then his cousin Toni. He has done everything for them, and some of the things that he had done is something he is not proud of. He is the most closed off, always keeping people at arm’s length. That’s why when Lola, Toni’s best friend, starts spending more time at his house, he’s the one who complains the most. And that is that he doesn’t want them to continue living in the neighborhood, he wants a better life for them, but they are reluctant to leave the house. From the first moment he saw Lola he has not stopped thinking about her, no matter how many girls he fucks,he always thinks about her. But he stays away from her since he doesn’t consider himself good enough for her. Until finally Lola manages to penetrate his barriers and convinces him to give her a chance. They both fall madly in love and although they have their ups and downs ( Lola’s jealousy and Alex’s insecurities) they are quite happy. Until Alex’s past comes back and he has to go back to his old life. Once again he is willing to sacrifice himself to protect the people he loves, even if it means losing Lola for good. What he did not count on is that Lola will fight tooth and nail for him. I ❤️❤️❤️it. I’m dying to read Javie’s book.
“When we look back, all we will see is a tragically beautiful beginning to our love story.”

I received an early copy to review and man was this book intense! It took me a little bit to get into it. It was hard for me to connect with the characters until maybe 25% in, but once I did the rest had me on the edge of my seat! Alex is a bad boy with a beautiful heart that he keeps hidden away because that is what life taught him to do and Lola is not exactly what she seems either. I liked all the characters! The ending felt a bit rushed to me though, I didn’t satisfy me, but regardless it was a good read! 3.5 stars from me.
This is the my first time reading Tori Alvarez and its not gonna be the last. This is the second book in the series and can be read as a standalone. I myself have not read the first one and had no problem understanding the plot, its explanatory in itself, written from dual POV.
Alex have had a hard life and Lola has had everything in her life but she is not the ruined spoiled brat, she is sensible and values people, relations more than money. Lola is the best friend of toni who is athe cousin of Alex, so in some way can be said to be formidable romance.
Initially they both try to control what they feel ut the pull is strong and they have to give in but alex's life is not easy. The story takes turns which make it interesting and i seroiusly love love toni and i'm going to read the first book in the series. It was a good read, slow biun romance
It’s a love on the wrong side of the tracks for me. Young rich white girl falls for the wrong boy. Sound familiar? And that’s what I thought, until I opened the book..... Yes it’s the same format, but how you put it together makes all the difference. And this one was put together really well.
Lola is your typical all American girl, popular, good grades type. But she’s not into all that, she wants a best friend she just be herself with, and she has that in Toni. Toni also has a great family, they always make her feel welcome.
Alex is a hard working young man, cares deeply for his siblings, but he knows he won’t ever amount to much. Working long hours to keep his family together, he doesn’t have time or the need for a girlfriend.
Alex knows he can’t have Lola, she’s too good for him, he’d only drag her down into the sorry state that is his life! Being his cousin’s best friend only makes it harder, he sees her every day. He needs to get rid of her!! Lola has had a crush on Alex forever. She’d love to be his, but knows that’s not possible. But it doesn’t stop the heart wanting what it shouldn’t have!!
But the attraction is there on both sides, and Alex finally admits to Lola that he likes her.... They agree to see where this will take them.... But true love never runs smooth!!
And when Alex’s past comes crashing back into his life! He does the only thing he does best, protect the ones he loves! Pushing away his family and Lola is the only course Alex has, breaking her heart will mean breaking his, but he can’t have Lola dragged down with him!
This book was just heartbreaking, it pulls all types of emotions out from you, like a good book should. Reading both sides of this book was great, seeing both sides of the story has always been a favourite read of mine (who wants a one dimensional story?) All the nuances are captured with care, and attention to detail is what makes this a book I’ll return to time and time again.
Will I go back and read the first one? I think I probably will at some point, then it will give me an excuse to revisit this beautifully written book.
I received a free eARC of this book as part of an indie bookstagram book tour, and I’m so glad I’m being exposed to independent authors that I haven’t read before.
However, this book wasn’t for me - I thought the writing was stilted and by 40% in still hadn’t gotten fully invested in the characters, so I DNF’ed it. Not every book is for every reader - but I would try something else from this author to see if maybe I just didn’t mesh with this one.
I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review. I was looking forward to reading this book after really loving book 1 in the Graffiti Hearts series. It did take me a bit longer to get in to but once I did, I loved the story. Having already met Alex and Lola in the first book, I already knew he was a badass and she was the talkative sweet sorority girl who happened to be Toni’s (Alex’s cousin) bestie. They say opposites attract and this couldn’t be truer in this story. Alex firmly believing his life consisted of staying out of jail and keeping alive and ensuring that his brother and cousin left the hood behind. I enjoyed the way Alex and Lola’s relationship developed, it wasn’t a cliched romance at all. I loved the twist that came and the way it played out. Just hoping now that there’s a book 3 for Javie’s story 🤞
I have been waiting for this book! I was blessed with an ARC. Thank god, because I was dying to read about Alex and Lola. I must confess Alex caught my attention in the first book. I’m pretty sure I messaged Tori asking about Alex and a second book as soon as I finished the first one.
The title of the book is a perfect description of Alex and Lola’s story. Lola is so bright and bubbly, Alex is quiet and serious. Their story is soo tragic but beautiful. I liked that the characters from the first book were still deeply involved in the second book. The family connection in the book is strong which I appreciated. And of course who doesn’t love a hispanic bad boy with a heart of gold.
The book is duel POV, which I LOVE. The writing was excellent, I felt immersed in their world. I was so into the book I didn’t notice that I was getting to the end. I got to the last page and when I swiped and nothing happened I was bummed. I didn’t want the book to end!
I know it’s too soon to ask... but I’m really hoping there is a third book. 😏😉 I am so hooked on the Graffiti Hearts series!
This is the first book I have read in the Graffiti Hearts series, so I was a little nervous when I discovered that it was actually Book 2! I was pleasantly surprised to be able to jump right in and get to know our characters, Alex and Lola. Alex, a confident and demanding Latino, is the quiet bad boy, who is constantly looking out for those he cares about. Lola is the best friend we all wish we had. Smart, beautiful, and determined, she makes it easy for us to like her. When Alex doesn’t think he can break out of his current situation, he pushes Lola away from his rough upbringing and subsequently himself.
Alvarez does an excellent job of sharing their backstory and how they grew into the personalities they have today. The book spans several years, but never feels like you have entered a time warp when starting a new chapter. I found myself rooting for Alex and Lola from the very beginning of this story, hoping that they would find their HEA. The dual narrative definitely made me excited to go back to the first book in the series and learn about Tori and Garrett’s story in Beautiful Collision.
I received a free ARC from Goodreads New Adult Book Club for the promise of an honest review.
It was good. Lola is and Alex's story is written well. Lola is a beautiful college student that crashes into Alex's life. Lola is also Alex's cousin best friend. They are both instantly attracted to each other. Lola is willing to pursue a relationship but Alex is constantly pushing her away. Alex is a high school drop out who sold weed to help pay his family's bills. He felt he wasn't good enough for Lola. Lola was pushing back against Alex's resistance. As Alex finally opens up, his past comes back to life and now he is living a double life.
The book is slow to start but if you make it to chapter 4 it gets better.
What an interesting book. I wasn't sure if it was for me but I was hooked within a few pages. It combines a really good story, with mild gang and drug references and some steamy sex but it's not over powering the book. This is definitely driven by the story and not the sex as most adult books are. I really enjoyed the book, our two main protagonists refuse to acknowledge their attraction, Alex doesn't want to drag Lola down but there is no way in stopping such deep attraction. The story nips along and keeps you interested throughout. I was given a copy of this book by voracious readers only for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this over the past three days and would certainly look out for more books by this author in the future.
Alex and Lola are attracted to one another. Lola is in college and from a different way of life than Alex. Alex grew up poor and with not much support. Alex takes care of his younger brother and cousin and feels responsible for them. Alex has a hard time seeing a way out of poverty and seeing his self worth. These issues alone are enough to keep Alex and Lola apart. Yet Lola is determined and no matter what situations are thrown their way fights for her man. Lola learns how to be strong and they both learn what is really important in life. Slow burn, romantic read.
Tragically Beautiful was an amazing love story that has all the elements I'm looking for in a book: possessive alpha hero, courageous heroine, steam, angst, and strong family ties. Not to mention, I devour books with strong Latin characters, and this book did not disappoint. The descriptions and character development was spot-on. I loved Alex and Lola, and can't wait to read more from this author. I need Javi's story!!! 5 AMOR stars!
This opposites-attract romance is hot and sweet! Alex is a tough-guy protector-type with a heart of gold. (I am told on good authority this is called an Alpha-roll, ha!) His first priority is always to take care of his family. He can hardly believe his sister’s perky friend Lola is interested in him, and fights the attraction with all his stone-faced manly resolve, but Lola does not give up! Guess who wins. :) It was so funny watching these two go back and forth, you want to just reach into the pages and shake some sense into them, lol, but in the end these crazy kids manage to get together.
Things seem too good to be true, until his past catches up to him, and this is where it REALLY gets interesting. Alex is working at a ranch, keeping his nose clean, until he gets a message from the neighborhood Jefe: time to pay back that favor. Alex knows he has two choices: get back in the game, or die.
I was biting my nails, wondering how he was going to balance his old life and his new, without getting pulled in too deep, or getting himself or Lola killed. Ms. Alvarez keeps you on tenterhooks wondering!
I loved Alex, and I loved Lola. She is so sweet and genuine. She doesn’t fit in with the other catty sorority sisters at all. She genuinely loves Alex, but his world is utterly alien to her. I loved the way Alvarez handled the balancing of this unlikely relationship, the dialogue and the situations all felt very real and true to life.
Well, I’m happy to report it all works out in the end, (with an excellent twist, no less) but you’ll just have to read it to find out how! If you like sweet romances don’t miss Tragically Beautiful by Tori Alvarez!
The slow burn in this book will keep you turning pages. I found myself wanting to yell at Alex and Lola to give each other and their relationship a chance. They were meant to be ♥️
This is book two in the Graffiti Hearts Series but can be read as a stand-alone.
Alex and Lola come from two different worlds. But are introduced by Toni, Alex’s cousin and Lola’s best friend. They have secret feelings for each other that neither wants to admit.
Alex is selfless, protective, and stubborn. He doesn’t want to admit his feelings for Lola and bring her into his world. He feels like he isn’t good enough for her and she deserves a better life then he could ever give her. Lola just as stubborn doesn’t want to give up on a chance to be with him. And she also wants Alex to see himself as she sees him.
They give love a chance but just as Alex feared; his past comes back to haunt him. How far will Alex go to protect Lola? Will Lola continue her stubborn ways and fight for their love no matter what?
A beautiful love story about two people from different worlds and the things they overcome to be together.
I immediately felt an affection for Alex, and felt his perspective was understandable and relatable. He is the alpha male and protector and I LOVED him for it, even if he took it too far at times. I didn’t love Lola as much at first, and felt her a bit one dimensional, however I grew to love the two of them and their dynamic. So much so that I was nervous and protective of Lola and angry at Alex when he was making choices that I didn’t agree with.
This story was beautifully written and kept me engaged and wanting to know what happened next. I think some complex issues were glossed over, which is the only reason I marked down as 4 rather than 5, but, in saying that, it was a perfect weekend read.
This book worked well as a standalone novel, but I will definitely be tucking into the first book, as well as any future ones!
