It's weird to be caught up, on volume 14 of a series, without feeling like much has actually happened in the last...ten or so. I really wish each volume stuck to a concrete storyline that could get wrapped up or at least pursued to some sort of a naturally developed transition. It feels like threads are constantly being opened and dropped now, and we're again throwing in more new characters without having resolved so many existing issues.

Kousuke and Setagawa finally tell Setagawa's mother about their relationship...AND WE DO NOT SEE IT. Literally just happens off the page. We only know they've told her because Setagawa says he's happy that in the midst of all her debt issues, she at least approves of their relationship. And that's it. I'm baffled, honestly, and pretty disappointed. How is that not an incredibly important scene to include? Where is any of the emotional resolution with Setagawa and his family?

And Setagawa living in the Ohshiba household has been getting brushed under the rug a bit. I'm confused because in this volume, apparently he's living in a separate room (has that empty room been there all along), when I thought the entire idea was that he was living with Kousuke. In earlier volumes, it'd seemed that they were sharing a room? It's not that important; in fact, I'm sure it is nice for Setagawa to have some space that's assigned just to him, but it's confusing and doesn't seem to match what we'd seen previously.

Plus there's the part where volume 1 or 2 specified that Sasa was a male cat (and we find out later on that Shigeo the dog is female). But in volume 14, Sasa is a female cat having Mary the male bar cat's kittens, for plot reasons. It's just these weird inconsistent things that are starting to bug me. I think Memeco just forgot? And is too slammed with deadlines to have the time to go back and check her own work. (Isn't that what editors are for, though.)

I am still enjoying this series. I like spending time with the characters, and the art is certainly still nice to look at. Plus, other than a decreasing quality in the proofreading, Kondansha has great publication quality, with color plates in every volume and some good tidbits of extra content at the end of each. (Setagawa calling Kousuke "Kensuke-san" was an absurdly bad editing miss, and there are others like that in various places. It makes some scenes harder to understand, for sure. And for some reason Ayaka has turned into Sayaka?)

I'm mostly just disappointed that the storytelling itself isn't feeling as tight and thoughtful as it did in earlier volumes. We're kind of rambling along and bumping into new ideas along the way.

So, what's in this volume.

It looks like Ken is going to pursue the games world, which is great for him, although programming requires math and language skills, and he has never been a good student. He's planning to live with Hasekura while "they" go to university, although Hasekura has decided to become a doctor (not sure how he got there from the conversations in the previous volume...again, information raised in an interesting way then just dropped as a foregone conclusion).

Setagawa and Kousuke have told Setagawa's mom about their relationship, she's fine with it, but Setagawa is still staying with her for a while to make sure she stays out of trouble and doesn't keep spending all her money. It also turns out she'd borrowed 3 million yen ($20,000) from the yakuza when Setagawa was little, and has never been able to pay off anything but the interest.

Coincidences abound again; the very same day she tells them about the debt, a bag of 3 million yen shows up in their apartment, and it appears to have come from Setagawa's father. Who's a good guy who only left them because he was being stalked by some other woman who'd threatened Setagawa and his mom.

Except. Okay. He's this great guy who's taken care of them, but in sixteen years he couldn't shake off the stalker and take responsibility for his child? Or just send them money on a regular basis so they weren't always stuck in poverty? I'm not exactly sure what we're supposed to be feeling about him, but Setagawa's mom is finally (literally) moving on, by sharing a place with a friend and letting go of the expensive, rundown apartment she'd only kept because she kept thinking Setagawa's dad would come back to them.

Second coincidence, although I guess it makes a little bit of sense: the debt was being managed by Kousuke's friend, who just forgave it once he found out, so now they have some extra money sitting around. That Setagawa refuses to touch. I don't think he's very forgiving of his dad at this point, but I have no idea if that is ever going to become a plot point or actual emotional storyline. With the current track record, probably not.

I did like the flashback of Setagawa realizing he had met his dad once, many years before, and Kousuke pulling in Setagawa's friends to help to cheer him up in more natural ways. (Because when Kousuke tries to cheer him up, Setagawa rallies and pretends to be happy for his sake, so they just get stuck in a loop.)

The school trip...happened. I was expecting there to be more to that, but after all the buildup it was a quick montage, with Setagawa doing his best to enjoy his time with his friends and not think about Kousuke too much.

I liked their reunion. I like how gentle Kousuke is with him, and how much he constantly holds himself back, keeping things on Setagawa's terms and ensuring they're always both happy. I like that they are, as they said, becoming more like each other - Kousuke is trying to be quieter and more thoughtful, and Setagawa is opening up his emotions more and allowing himself to occasionally be angry when it's warranted.

The kittens stuff was okay; it was a nice way for Yunge and Natsuo to actually interact a bit more, and the misunderstanding was pretty funny. Their relationship is weird and rocky and I guess they're maybe making progress? In their unique way.

Meanwhile, do we even know what's going on with the one married couple, Houjou and Ayaka? Houjou is such a side character at this point. I really thought he was going to stay more prominent. I did like him showing up to sort of help Kousuke with the debt and the bag of money thing.

Then we get the next big reveal: the cat wasn't the only pregnant one! Apparently, Ohshiba dad was in the country long enough to create and abandon a new sibling. So I guess that's happening.

And the stuff about Kousuke's ex? Who knows! That woman from Setagawa's work did make a couple background appearances, but that's it.

CANT WAIT TO READ THIS!!!
BASED ON THE COVER I'M HOPING FOR MORE CONTENT ON KOUSEKE AND SATAGAWA...

Volume 14 is way better than the last one or two. There's more Kousuke and Masahiro yaay 🎉 there's a little more drama in the Natsuo and Yugi side story, but of course, volume 14 leaves us in a cliffhanger of what's going to happen with them. Also, an unexpected surprise at the end.

I have no idea when volume 15 will be released in the US, but I'll most likely continue the series.

FINALLY. I feel like this series is heading back in the right direction. A lot was thrown at you in this one. There's a lot of storylines happening, but I'm happy Kousuke and Masahiro finally got more of the spotlight and there's development with Yuge and Natsuo!! Huzzah!

3 stars even though I hate the reveal at the end and think Miho should put her foot down when it comes to her husband or just have some common sense.

There are so many threads to deal with that it feels like we don't get enough time with any of them, but it's still fun and sweet.
