"You're just another greedy gold digger."

Abby West was shocked at Giles Farrow's words. True, his aunt Matilda Bateman had taken Abby under her wingon Abby's dream holiday to India.

But Abby hadn't been kind to the elderlywoman just because Miss Bateman was really Mattie Bates, famous and wealthy detective-story writer. Abby hadn't even known.

It was bad enough to have to put up with Giles's poor opinion of her, his searing eyes that regarded herso accusingly. It was worse to have to admit that he was the most attractive man she'd ever had the misfortune to meet!

Nice vintage romance set in India. Heroine was alright, had some TSTL moments. Hero has another woman in his past. Enjoyable read though it seems like the heroine spends more time with the elderly woman she is accompanying than with the hero. I really liked the India setting.

This is a sweet story that is equal parts romance and equal parts travelogue. Our "ugly duckling" heroine wins the lotto? (a computer picked her name) and she decides to spend it all on package tour of India. She only has fifty pounds left over for new clothes, but she doesn't care. She's going on the trip of a lifetime. Oh - and she has no job to return to and her mother and super-model twin sisters are in California - but that's okay. She's going to India.

On the tour with her is a formidable old lady with an equally formidable nephew dropping her off at Heathrow. The old lady and heroine take a shine to each other and when the old lady comes down with bronchitis, the h feels honor bound to contact the formidable nephew (H) who is a nuclear engineer finishing up a project in India.

The hero accuses the heroine of trying to cheat his mystery author aunt out of her considerable wealth, or at the very least, trying to set herself up as a secretary-companion. Heroine is very angry about these accusations and they have several nasty exchanges until the hero goes too far and has to apologize.

There's also an OW who is cluttering up the exotic landscape, but the heroine manages to get her man after a sprained ankle and some alone time at some caves.

I really liked the heroine in this and the hero, isn't bad for a "Man of Ice." He apologizes beautifully and he truly seems smitten with the heroine. I really enjoyed the tour through India. I'm sure the author's impressions are dated now, but the descriptions of the Taj Mahal and other tourist highlights were fun to read.

This was a sweet romantic story in Indian settings. Miss. Lindsay gives an authentic picture of India at that time. it was indeed very beautiful. never for once I wished to put the book down. hero was at first very suspicious about heroine but he soon fell hard for her. heroine also loved him but thought he was still in love with his ex.

"Man of Ice" is the story of Abby and Giles.

The heroine has lived a somber life overshadowed by her twin siblings. When she gets an inheritance of 1000 pounds from a relative, she decides to use it to take a once in a lifetime trip to India.
It is there she meets a kind elderly woman, who she instantly becomes friends with. When the lady falls ill, she is forced to contact her nephew, who then accuses the heroine of initiating friendship for nefarious reason. Apparently, the heroine is a famous mystery writer, which the heroine was unaware of! She, however, takes no insults and verbally retaliates! Thus begins a battle of wills between he hero and the heroine. But will love enter the equation?

I really enjoyed the story. There is a lot of romanticizing of India, but it is done with a lot of appreciation and respect. The heroine is feisty and strong, and you can see the hero falling in love with her. Satisfying read!

This book is just not a romantic novel but also first hand account of author's visit to India. That is the reason why I enjoyed reading this book. The story is quite simple though sweet. Besides it is hard to find a unique story in usual romance novels.
This book is for people who would like to read a romantic story and also get a glimpse of India and the commonly known tourist sites. The reader had written the book without any bias. Her observation and experience of an Indian visit are quite realistic.

Quite an interesting read. The "ugly ducking" of the family finds she isn't so ugly after all.

Abby West always felt plain and uneducated in comparison to her beautiful twin sisters who won a beauty contest and later became models and migrated to America with their mother. Abby stayed in England and kept working as a library assistant. However, when the library she was working in was going to be sold and she won the lottery, she decided to make her dream of visiting India a reality. It was during her - more than exciting - journey that she met Mrs. Bateman, an old exceptional lady who was in the same tour with her. They got along so well that Abby missed going to her next destination with the tour guide because dear Mrs. Bateman had gotten herself sick one day. Out of concern and great fear, Abby had to call Mrs. Bateman's nephew, Giles Forrow, for help. However, when Giles arrived, he was not at all grateful to Abby for accompanying his aunt. He actually accused Abby of being an opportunist and of approaching his aunt for selfish reasons of her own! Abby was shocked of the attack and misjudgement, yet she was unwilling to break her relationship with Mrs. Bateman because of this aggressive man and she accepted being her assistant!

If you want to read a refreshing kind of story that reminds you of Audrey Hepburn movies then this is the story you are looking for! It's a very good pass-time story even though it was written in early 80s.

This used to be one of my favorites. Upon re-reading I still do like it, although it’s a bit dated. It is sweet, with a lovely expedition to India that the heroine experiences. That part takes up quite a bit of the first half, but it is very well done for an HQ, and makes you feel as if you are there. It’s like a nice little unexpected gem.

It has some classic “HQ” moments like breaking an ankle and having to be rescued by the H, and a fake engagement out of the blue, but it’s still cute. It goes from an immersed-in-a-new-foreign-culture beginning to a fairly standard tropey second half, but it does have a transition period and works fairly well (again, for an HQ).

Aside from the obligatory “I-won’t-tell-you-how-I-feel-for-some-inexplicable-reason” behavior, the H is a pretty nice guy.

If they communicated more, I would like it better.

I believe their HEA because despite the silly not-communicating thing and the almost required uppity behavior of the H, they are actually both very nice people who get along well and have similar interests. I like to think this is one of the most “sweet” couples in an HQ.

In summary: While this doesn’t have the crazy angst that I so often gravitate towards, I actually really like this one and it’s quite sweet and lovely for an HQ.

I first read this book many years ago and I had clearly remembered the aunt telling the heroine about the hero being so intelligent as a boy that he had fallen in school and had pretended to everyone that he had amnesia and only spoke Latin for a week!

It was an enjoyable re-read, but they didn't really get to know each other at all. There was no talking and finding about each other's tastes and experiences. So, it's a little difficult to truly believe that they have a connection or an attraction outside of the physical. However, I think that's on par for the course for romance novels of this type and era.

Some adorable moment that made me smile. The story was interesting enough with india and mild fighting between h and H. But it became cliche when it came to the pretended engagement which made the final I love you part cheesy and not convincing.
