Mr. Dodd was the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from '33-'38. His diary was published in '41. There are parts that are downright chilling with the benefit of hindsight, but the writing is clear and provides an incredible view of a man attempting to be a good public servant (and historian) in an increasingly abnormal environment.
