The past is back to bite them …

When Robin was ten, her big sister vanished and was later found dead, burnt beyond recognition in the basement of a drug house. But the death didn’t make sense. If her sister overdosed—the only theory police considered after finding that needle—then who set the fire?

Fast forward twenty years.

Robin is a mess, bouncing from one dead-end job to the next while obsessing over her sister’s murder—she must solve a crime no one else thinks exists—and frantically trying to save her own daughter from a similar fate. She’s angry, injured, and falling apart. Worse, her investigation has stalled. Her last hope of uncovering the truth is a prostitute named Lisa who worked the streets with her sister. If only Robin could find her …

Dr. Lisa Hayes has it all: a handsome millionaire husband, a darling set of twin girls, a wildly successful psychiatry career, and a gated estate in the countryside. She also has a secret—the kind of big, ugly secret that will burn her world down if it ever gets out.

Enter fate.

When Lisa becomes Robin’s therapist, a diabolical web of treachery begins unraveling. What does Lisa know about that body in the basement? And just how far will she go to preserve a beautiful illusion?

This book was okay. I felt like it got really slow and boring in some parts and I was just sitting here like “ok.. just get to the point.”

I wish there was more dialogue between the sisters before they attacked each other.. it all felt so rushed when they finally confronted one another and I’m pretty pissed off that Marina died the way that she did. It wasn’t a satisfying ending at all. Idk I guess I expected things to go differently.

Oh! And I disliked the authors use of so many dashes or parenthesis in paragraphs. It really made me confused and I often found myself rereading sentences to understand what the author was saying.

This book was really slow to start. The main characters got on my nerves. One is a VERY disturbing psychopath, and the other is an anxious wreck. I struggled with all of the side thoughts, the ones in parentheses and between the dashes. They were incredibly disrupting to the flow of reading, and I often had to re-read sections. There were unexpected twists which resulted in a crazy story. Once I got to about halfway through, the pace picked up and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen. Overall, I enjoyed it. This isn't a book I would read again, but I would recommend it.

3.5/5 ⭐️ (rounded up for Goodreads)

This book had a very slow start and for a while I considered DNF’ing it because I just couldn’t connect with the main characters.
The writing style also took awhile to get used to, there is use of parentheses which kind of threw me off sentences and I needed to re-read some sections a few times to understand it all.

But around halfway through it started to get quite interesting and I didn’t see the twists coming at the end, so I would recommend this book if you can get past the writing style and a slow start.

It took me longer to read because I just could not care less about the main characters. The main protagonist seems to be overly suspicious of EVERYONE with no reason and I found it hard to feel concerned about her obsession over the loss of her sister from decades ago.

I stuck it out because I saw others’ reviews that it got more interesting about halfway through, and it did. I will admit it had a twist I wasn’t expecting. And although I was interested in knowing how it would all turn out, I can’t recall ever feeling on edge over any of the “suspense” I think the author had intended.

One of my biggest gripes in a book is when the characters' actions are so illogical that they don't feel like real people. So many of the things these characters do are illogical and idiotic, yet the author managed to write them in a way where they just come off as unhinged people not grounded in reality, so their crazy behavior somehow makes sense. I didn't even care for the main character, I didn't find myself rooting for her at all...but I still really enjoyed the story

This book drags in the worst way. I guessed that Lisa was Marina SO early on but it took an absolute eternity for the dime to actually drop. Once robin and marina are in the same place at the same time for the party robin is working, the plot has an opportunity to finally escalate and pick up, but it bizarrely goes slower?! Would not read again and would not recommend.

I think it's more of a 4.5, but this book was fabulous! The characters pull you in, and the plot keeps you coming back for more! A beautiful story of a mother desperate to keep her daughter safe, while also finding the person who murdered her sister, this book made me think after I finished it!

A rollercoaster

This story did have a slow start to me but when it finally hit the climax and all of the pieces came together, I couldn't put it down until the end

Started a little slow, but came together nicely with an unexpected twist. The first half took me almost a week to read. The second half I finished in a day!

Long book but much deserved ending

I wasn't sure I'd love this book. It went on forever. But happy deserved endings are worth it. I wasn't disappointed.

This one was a slow burn. There were several characters that you easily could keep up with. In the end, the twist wasn’t huge for as detailed as the book was.

Good read with some twists

I enjoyed this one. Very diabolical character, who keeps you guessing. If you like murder mysteries, then you will like this one.

Absolutely stunning with dual perspective from a victim and the murder's POV years later.

Was thrilling and loved the 'just desserts' ending.
