Janice Maynard came to the writing life early! When her third grade short story, “The Princess and the Robbers”, won a red ribbon in a school arts fair, Janice was hooked. She followed up that early success with a more commercial piece in the sixth grade… “Why My Mom Loves To Drink Coke”. No advance for that one, but she won a six-pack of Coke… remember those great little bottles?
In junior high Janice began circulating her work to a wider audience. A dozen or so notebook pages stapled together made the rounds in some particularly boring classes, with the riveting tales carefully hidden behind textbooks.
High school meant the big time… editor of the school newspaper, the Maroon and White. Janice used her insightful editorials to delve into such meaty subjects as “locker room odor” and “why we need two-ply tissue in the student bathrooms”.
College brought lots of writing, but very little of it creative… four years later, Janice stepped into the adult world as a fully certified elementary teacher.
Despite motherhood, full-time employment, and keeping up with an “always into something” husband, Janice never lost her love of writing or the desire to be published. In 1996 she realized her long-time dream when Kensington Publishing bought her first book, Sweetheart. That exciting moment was followed by the sales of two more books in the Precious Gem line.
In the fall of 2002, Janice left the classroom to pursue writing full-time.
Good second chance romance. Two years earlier, Drake and Cammie had been together in a heated relationship. But when Cammie's desire for a family ran up against Drake's absolute refusal to become a father, she broke things off.
Two years later, Cammie is shocked to encounter Drake in the hospital parking lot as she leaves a meeting there. Drake, who returned from an extended trip to Australia to care for his stepsister, Ainsley, was equally surprised to see her. As he walks her to her car, both are stunned to discover an abandoned baby left on her car. After calling 911, Drake isn't surprised to find that Cammie wants to care for the infant herself. Because she isn't certified as a foster parent, and he is, he reluctantly volunteers himself as her helper.
Cammie is stunned but grateful and also wary. The years apart haven't diminished the attraction between them, and Drake makes no secret that he wants her back in his bed. One other thing hasn't changed - they are still miles apart on their parenthood opinions. When Drake was twenty-two, his father and Ainsley's mother were killed, leaving her an orphan. Drake left school and became her foster parent. It wasn't an easy task to parent a teenage girl who displayed her grief in inappropriate ways, and it put Drake off ever becoming a father himself. Meanwhile, Cammie still wants a child of her own and is pursuing ways to make that happen.
I loved watching Cammie and Drake deal with their unresolved feelings while caring for the baby. Cammie is all-in for the baby care but also a little overwhelmed at times. Though Drake had no intention of doing anything with the baby, he couldn't bear to see Cammie struggle. Over the next few days, baby "Pumpkin" wiggles his way into Cammie's heart, and Cammie wiggles her way back into Drake's. And neither of them can resist the attraction that still burns as hot as ever. But reality is never far away. Drake is supposed to return to Australia any day, and Pumpkin's parents could be found at any time. Can either Cammie or Drake give up their dreams for a chance to be together?
I liked the ending, as both Cammie and Drake took hard looks at their deeply held beliefs. Both had to decide what was more important to them. Drake had a bit of a wake-up call thanks to a doctor's appointment and an unexpected decision to make regarding his ranch. I liked how he involved Cammie and used the opportunity to have a serious talk with her. The scene on the ranch was very emotional, and I loved seeing how they came together.
The story ended with Pumpkin's fate still up in the air. I wonder if that is the story arc that will carry through the series. There is also some page time spent on the estrangement between Cammie's brother Rafe and their father, which may refer to the series subtitle of Fathers and Sons. I look forward to reading the rest of the books to see how everything turns out.
An Heir of His Own by Janice Maynard was a really good start to the Fathers and Sons series. I love the little mystery of who Baby Micah's father is. I found Drake and Cammie to be wonderful characters.
**Received a copy from the publisher and voluntarily reviewed it. Also personally purchased a paperback copy.**
This is a great, classic romance and it is easy to read. There is so much to the story, but instead of me telling you exactly what the book is about you should definitely read it.
An Heir of His Own begins the Texas Cattleman’s Club: Fathers and Sons multi-author mini-series with a story that is both heartbreaking and heart-healing for a couple who find themselves doing exactly what originally broke them up – caring for a baby.
When Cammie discovers an abandoned baby in a car seat on the trunk of her car she immediately goes into protection mode. And, of course, she’d run into her ex-lover in the hospital parking lot and he’d insisted on walking her to her car. Cammie wants to take care of this baby until the mother can be found, but she’s not foster-parent certified – Drake is, and against his better judgment he offers to take in the child only with Cammie as the baby’s caregiver temporarily.
Drake raised his stepsister after their parents’ death, and she was quite a typical teenage handful, acting out, and hating him for being alive. As far as Drake was concerned he’d done his time as a parental figure and had no plans for children of his own. That fact is what originally broke up Drake and Cammie when her desire for their child became too much for Drake to deal with. Now they’re back together for a baby’s sake – and the powerful sizzling attraction between them hasn’t slowed down one bit.
I’ll admit that it took a bit for me to warm up to Drake, he needed to melt just a touch before I was firmly in his corner for the expected happy ending. I adored Cammie. She’s still in love with Drake but knows where she stands with him. With an adorable baby to care for and a learning curve to quickly get caught up on, Cammie has her hands full. She appreciated Drake’s help but didn’t expect him to stick around – when he did, when he acknowledged the attraction between them was still quite alive and well, she’s understandably confused but just a bit hopeful as well.
I was easily swept up in An Heir of His Own by Janice Maynard. It’s a very strong story to start off the next mini-series from the Texas Cattleman’s Club. Baby “Pumpkin’s” fate is still left somewhat up in the air at the story’s ending… so we’re left to see where his situation goes from here. This mini-series is, after all, Fathers and Sons – but time will tell how it all turns out. I loved watching two good-hearted people find their way back to each other after realizing that the love is still there, stronger than ever, and perhaps, an attitude adjustment for Drake will come about just in time for their happy, lifetime together ending. I had fun here and am looking forward to where we go next in How to Handle a Heartbreaker by Joss Wood.
Former lovers taking care of an abandoned baby? It's a recipe for steamy encounters. Drake and Cammie split up when Cam mentioned that she wanted to his baby. Drake spent 7 years raising his stepsister and has had his fill of being a parent. But he offers to help Cammie be a caregiver while they search for the little one's family. Unresolved passion rocks both of them but Cammie is looking for more in life and Drake is unsure if he can deliver. An honest reaction for a man who had to grow up quickly. Loved seeing how they worked through their issues.
Not as much excitement as other Cattleman Club series. Not much about Royal or the Cattleman Club at all. Love can be cruel. Your childhood or young adulthood can scar someone’s mind that affects their decisions in adulthood. Cammie and Drake are no different. They love deeply but having a family of their own tore them apart 2 years earlier. Stubbornness, fear of failure, letting someone down are strong feelings to overcome. Can Drake realize this before Cammie is lost forever? What ever happened to Pumpkin. Hopefully they continue in the other books in the series. .
‘An Heir of His Own’ is part of the TexasCattleman’s Club series.
Drake and Cammie were lovers two years ago. They were the perfect match. Until she told him of he dream to have a baby. He eventually broke it off and they went their separate ways. She stayed in Royal and he ended up in Australia. But he’s back. His stepsister is in the hospital recovering from a ruptured appendix. He’s rushed from Australia to check on her. Cammie is leaving the hospital after a meeting and they run into each other. When he walked her to her car, they were both surprised to find a car seat sitting on the trunk of her car. With a baby inside!
Cammie didn’t want to release the baby to state custody and before he knew it, Drake had agreed to stand as foster parent. He’d gotten licensed when his dad and stepmom died so he could care for his young stepsister. So Cammie and the baby moved to his guest room. Over the course of their time there, Cammie was getting more attached to the baby and Drake was getting re-attached to Cammie who thwarted his advances. Until she couldn’t fight the attraction any longer. They still were in total disagreement about a baby, but they had no problem in the sex area.
Cammie knew he was going back to Australia and that eventually the baby’s parents would be found. But was she ready to give either of them up?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The hot and cold of their relationship kept me on my toes. In the end, they each had to make some decisions in order to keep the other in their life. I highly recommend reading it.
An Heir of His Own is Janet Maynard’s contribution to Harlequin Desire’s Texas Cattleman's Club: Fathers and Sons. Cammie Wentworth and Drake Rhodes broke up two years ago. Fast forward and Drake has returned to Royal Texas to check up on his stepsister who is hospitalized after having appendicitis. Drake notices Cammie at the hospital and follows her to her car where they discover a baby in a carrier sitting on the trunk of her car.
Always wanting a family of her own, Cammie desires to care for the baby until his mother can be located. For that to happen, Drake steps into action and offers his services to her as a foster home. Cammie moves into Drake’s home and they experience all of the feelings they had before their break-up.
Will Drake acknowledge that his past fostering of his stepsister, played a huge part in their break-up? Will they make the most of their second chance?
An Heir of His Own was a heartwarming romance of giving into that second chance and learning to listen to your heart. I highly recommend this book.
I received an advance copy which I chose to read and review. This is my honest opinion.
An Heir of His Own is the 1st book in the “Texas Cattleman’s Club Fathers And Son Series”. Janice did an excellent job starting the series off with a second chance at romance with an abandoned baby being the catalyst.
The hero Drake Rhodes and heroine Cammie Wentworth are ex-lovers. Cammie and Drake broke up after Cammie found herself ready to start a family and Drake not being ready. After raising in 15 year step sister Drake is not ready to go down that road again so the two parted ways. Cammie is leaving a hospital meeting and Drake is at the hospital because his step sister Ainsley appendix ruptured. After a chance meeting in the hospital parking lot the find an abandoned baby on Cammie’s car trunk and Drake takes his phone out to call 911. Drake changes his mind at Cammie insistence. Drake and Cammie are still much attracted to each other. Drake knows about fostering a child so he steps in and helps Cammie. With the two co-parenting will Drake change his mind and understand what’s important in this second chance romance?
I received an ARC via the author and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
A tempting reunion rekindles the flame between lost love and happily ever after! Janice Maynard is kicking off the new Texas Cattleman's Club sub-series Fathers and Sons while reconnecting past lovers with a baby in need in AN HEIR OF HIS OWN. The characters are easily relatable and their back story and current predicament held my attention throughout. I wanted a little more in places and felt like the ending was a bit abrupt but I whole-heartedly enjoyed Cam and Drake and am looking forward to more to come in the series.
Cammie is sweet and sincere and her heart falls for this innocent baby at first sight. I liked seeing her emotional journey towards forgiveness while still holding true to her wants, needs and desires.
Drake is kindhearted and down to earth, but early responsibility led him to believe his future couldn't measure up to what Cam wanted.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a little mystery with your romance and enjoys a fast paced reunion story.
An awesome book. I couldn’t put it down. I was starving by the time I finished it, because I didn’t even stop for food. The characters are heartwarmingly real, you get sucked into the story and just want to help them resolve everything happily. For a long while it looks like it won’t be possible. It’s the first in a series that I’ll be eagerly waiting book 2 of to find out where they go from here. At least it looks like they have achieved a happy ending. Well done!

As a young adult, Drake Rhodes became a foster parent to his orphaned step-sister. The experience put him off on parenthood–permanently. In fact, his firm stance on becoming a father one day is what led to his breakup with Cammie Wentworth two years ago. So why is he compelled to help Cammie take care of the abandoned baby she discovers on the trunk of her car?
Drake has to wrestle with his vision of his future, while Cammie reckons with her long-held desire to be a mother. Can they find common ground outside of their undeniable sexual chemistry? And what about Pumpkin, the sweet little boy that Cammie and Drake have let into their lives?
Once again, Janice Maynard writes characters that are lovable, maddening, and that you can't help but cheer for. The history that Drake & Cammie share, along with the care and concern they both show for Pumpkin, pave the way for a bright future in Royal, Texas.
An Heir of his Own is a second chance romance that begins a new Texas Cattleman’s Club series. If you haven’t read any of these books you need to they are fabulous! Once again Janice doesn’t let us down by bringing to the table a great read. Drake and Cammie had been an item and broke up because she wanted a family and Drake did not he raised his stepsister and did the family thing.. They both have not seen each other in a couple of years and run into each other. He is back from Australia because his stepsister is in the hospital. They find an abandoned baby on Cammie’s car, since he has gone through the foster parent process, Drake offers to help Cammie by fostering the baby. Will this be a big mistake because now the two of them will be living together? Love watching Cammie with the baby and trying not to fall for Drake again, Drake trying to fight his feelings for Cam and the baby.
An Heir of his Own by Janice Maynard is Book One of the Texas Cattleman’s Club: Fathers and Sons series. In this second chance romance, we are introduced to Cammie Wentworth and Drake Rhodes. Cammie and Drake broke up two years ago because she wanted a baby and to start a family. Drake raised his 15-year-old stepsister after their parents were killed in a car accident so he knows the hardships of parenthood. After a chance encounter in a hospital parking lot finds Cammie and Drake finding an abandoned baby on her car trunk, they call a truce in order to be the foster parents of this baby. “Pumpkin” wiggles his way into Cammie’s heart easily, but will he have the same effect on Drake? Having to live under the same roof, will Cammie and Drake find themselves back to each other or will Cammie’s want for a family drive them further apart?
Drake is set in his ways. He doesn't want to get married nor have kids. As he is coming to visit his sister in the hospital he runs smack dab into his ex Cammie. They were together for two years..Things were hot but he ran when she said she wanted kids some day. As she is going to her car she sees a baby seat on her car. There is a crying little one. Drake starts helping than volunteers to help out. Thsi starts the ball rolling of them being in close proximity with the same heat still there. As much as Cammie hurts she is still in love with Drake and keeps putting him off til she finally can't stand it...Can they both overcome hurting each other and see they are meant to be with each other? This was a great story of love and redemption! A great first start to this new TCC series!
An Heir of His Own by Janice Maynard is the first book in a new Harlequin continuity series, Texas Cattleman's Club: Fathers and Sons. This is a great second chance romance. The two main characters, Cammie Wentworth and Drake Rhodes ended their relationship two years prior to the beginning of this book. They run into each other at the hospital where Cammie was leaving a meeting and Drake is going to visit his stepsister. Then one of the most interesting parts of the storyline occurs. They find a baby on the trunk of Cammie's car. I like how this brought the two together since it was Cammie's desire to have a baby and start a family that scared Drake and ended their relationship. I was fascinated by the way this author turned things around for this couple.
Can a second chance romance succeed? Is an abandoned baby a ticket to success in a relationship? Follow Drake and Cammie as they co foster parent a child and while they face those responsibilities, they must also face their feelings for one another. This is an easy to enjoy back and forth relationship story that brings us moments of joy and heartbreak as we see these characters struggle with their beliefs and feelings. A great first novel in the Texas Cattleman's Club: Father and Son Series. Janice Maynard is a consistently engaging writer with a depth of characters that is appreciated in this genre. This is a review written on behalf of the publisher, but of my own volition and not influenced in any way.
Abandoned baby and the man that left her two years ago both play on Cami's heart.
This was a rollercoaster ride. I loved it. Only thing is because it is a part of a series with other authors, some back 0 and some resolution are done by different authors.
Cammie and Drake's relationship ended two years ago. Now they meet again and they found a baby. Cammie wants to take care of baby, but she needs someone who is approved for foster parenting, Drake is and he offers Cammie place at his house. The attraction is still there, but his decision not to have kids, is something Cammie can't overlook. Great storyline. Enjoyed very much.
Drake and Cammie have been close friends in the past and now put in the position to co foster parent an abandoned baby seems like it should be easy but then their feelings get involved and that can make things feel a tad messy - a nice read with a great HEA! I read a paperback version and freely leave my review.
I always enjoy Ms. Maynard’s books. She always gives her characters such a deep sense of family.
Although Drake is a little more dense than some of her other heroes, lol. He does eventually come around and realize what’s right in front of his face with Cammie.
Drake Rhodes is in charge. He has his life set. When Cammie comes back into his life he realizes maybe he needs to rethink his set life. What will you do for love?
A sweet and heartwarming second chance romance. I loved the characters and sizzling chemistry. I loved their journey as they get passed differences. A great way to start the series.
