Betrayed by the Republic, Mathison and his Marines are separated. Hunted by the Republic, the SOG, and the vanhat, they have nowhere to turn but to each other.
Having stowed away aboard a Governance troop transport, Mathison and Stathis escape to a SOG planet and discover the Governance has planned an ambush for the Republic. Meanwhile, Levin and Winters clash with Republic hunter-killer teams and barely escape with their lives. Wanted by all sides, the Marines have no allies and no way to find each other.
As the SOG prepares to ambush the Republic in the Zhukov system, the Marines and Aesir clash, and the vanhat prepare to slaughter everyone who survives.
The Marines have set their rally point at the gates of hell, and nothing will stand in their way. Let the bodies hit the floor.
Reader, writer, martial artist, US Marine, Veteran, Squad Leader, Team Leader, Saw Gunner, Rifleman, Computer Consultant, Security Officer, Dungeon Master, world traveler, Computer Gamer, dreamer, realist, American and best of all Dad!
Growing up in Europe during the height of the cold war and then serving in a Marine SOC (Special Operations Capable) Battalion during the collapse of Communism provided a lot of life experience and a unique perspective on life and the world. The first novel he read was Jules Vern's 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' when he was ten and has been reading ever since.
Before the Marines he was a pocket protector wearing nerd, after the Marines he held jobs as a Security officer/Patrol Sergeant, Lieutenant and other odd specialized jobs like body guard or surveillance, and ended up brushing off the pocket protector to become a Computer Consultant.
These days he dreams of quitting his day job as a computer consultant to work full time as a writer and dad.
Excellent. The marines are caught in the middle of Asgardian infighting whilst at the same time trying to accomplish a very dangerous mission behind enemy lines. At some point, they even have to team up with some very strange bedfellows to ensure they stand a chance in the fight against the abomination.
This is by far turning into one of the best military sci-fi series I have read. It is definitely exciting and action non-stop. The characters are well developed and the story-line is well developed and very, very interesting. We're back with Gunner Sergeant Wolf Mathison, USMC, and his very small group of Marines that survived a pro-longed cryostasis sleep. They are now in the year 2400 and their world had changed dramatically. Yet, they seemed to have adjusted pretty well. It didn't seem that things were going to be going their way when they first woke up aboard a SOG (Social Organizational Governance) starship. That in any other name is a communist organization and they rule their space and people with an iron fist.
Fortunately for GySgt Mathison and his Marines, they were subsequently rescued by a veteran team of Vapaus Republic special operators lead by Lojtnant Skadi. Yeah, this is a mixture of Swedish and Finnish culture and you'll continue to have to get used to them using mostly un-understandable and un-pronounceable words. Lt. Skadi has a team of four operators and due to her greater life expectancy in this era, she and her team have been doing this job for at least fifty-years! The Vapaus Republic is comprised of two different cultures, the Aesir, who seemed to be the ground forces, and the Vanir who were mostly starship Captains and crews of those starships. These are supposedly the good guys and so far are helping the Marines adapt to their new situation.
Sadi takes the Marines to the Homestar which is a huge space station built inside an asteroid. It is one of the few "resting" places for the Vapaus Republic soldiers and citizens who are always on the move so as not to fall into the hands of the SOG. The Vapaus Republic has a large fleet, but not to the size of the SOG. While GySgt Mathison welcomes the assistance of Skadi and her team, he's also wary of everything going on around him. He's also developed a relationship with Sif, a physically looking 12 year old, who happens to be a member of the Nakija, a ninja-like organization, but she has other "special" abilities that she will have to employ very soon during their next mission together.
That mission involves going to planet Green Hope and finding out what happened to another special operation team. That team was supposed to investigate the planet for evidence of the possible outbreak of madness like is happening in other parts of space. Only all contact was lost with them. Now it's up to Skadi's team, including the Marines, to find out what happened. The mission wasn't one that they were unfamiliar with, but they all were dreading what they might encounter. So, they geared up and prepared to go when things began changing within the Vapaus Republic.
This change is going to cause GySgt Mathison and his Marines a lot of trouble. They find they no longer can trust anyone no matter who they say they are. Still, Sif and even Skadi swear they are their allies, but it's going to take some effort to prove that to the Marines. In the meantime, they are caught on a planet which seems to be infected with zombies and giant trolls who used to be humans. An interesting twist to this story will be when they have to team up with a crack team of SOG soldiers in order to save everyone's lives.
I found this book to be rather lengthy, but it was hard to put it down. lt seemed every chapter was exciting and had really well written content. Even getting past the use of Swedish, Norwegian, or Finnish words isn't that much of a chore since the story is so interesting. I have no clue as to where this will end, but I do hope it doesn't end anytime soon.
The next book, "Revolution Calling", is available on Amazon now and I already have it on my reading list. I just might move it up quite a bit higher!
Another great entry in the series. Some surprising character deaths amid the Marines being betrayed by the Republic. Stathis continues to be my favorite, based off his dialogue alone. He and Mathison always have a great back and forth. "The USMC has never lost a war against vampires. When did we fight vampires? Were there vampires in the US? No? Vampires knew better than to mess with the US." Just great material all around. Towards the last quarter of the book, things take a turn for the Marines and very uncomfortable alliances are formed. I'm really eager to see where this leads.
Usually by book three of a military series it is just a remix of battle scenes from the previous books with escalating (and impossible) heroics that everyone lives through and some ever more convoluted plot points to explain why the last boss fight wasn’t the end of things.
The story is great, right amount of character development, tense story telling, and the battle scenes are not repetitious.
Everytime I read that line I just laugh out loud. I used to be Stathis. I used to have the privilege of leading a bunch of Stathis. I know that since books tend to be electronic the number of books in a series tends to hit double digits instead of the traditional trilogy. I get series burnout. But, occasionally you get a series that is worthy. Buy the books and make the author rich.
Another dam good read about Matheson and his remaining crew. It follows his journey and exploits and how he is ahh nearly gave the story away well actually I did but deleted it after reading what I had written. Proof reading is something I reckon is something everyone should do. I know writers do it all the time. Good story enjoyable read and can only ask you keep this standard of writing its great and so hard to put down a big THANK YOU.
4.5 Stars. This episode (book) got a bit too deep into gamified combat and small planet syndrome. Imagine you're a special forces troop on a rescue op in Afghanistan, only to find yourself transported to Tijuana, Mexico and find yourself fighting vampires. Then you happen across not just the people you set out to rescue, but the rest of your unit who didn't get sent to Afghanistan. Now, spread this across a universe with a few hundred planets.
As a retired Jarhead I appreciate any book that shows the pure kick ass attitude of the US Marines, and this book surely puts that across. The bond a Marine has with his/her brother Marines is hard wired and can't be broken or understood by anyone who is not a Marine. Like Marines say "It's Hard To Be Humble When You're The Finest"! Semper Fi
Great reading this book. There was one really funny part, and I think an important part. This book ended too soon for me, but I think that the story will continue. I am excited to read more.
I have enjoyed this series from the beginning. I would recommend this story to anyone who loves the USMC. The people are believable. Great plot and a kickass plot!
Exciting or at least semi exciting conclusion to the series. The author uses extreme detail to describe the predictable path to a somewhat disappointing ending!
Frisbee may have stolen from several classic shows, but he makes those elements his own. Frozen troopers waking hundreds of years later, battleships and other elements are familiar. Add in creatures that could have come from a BellSouth ...
First half of the first book was a little slow personally , ever since then I’ve been on a wild ride. I expect to read All books in 6 days. Thoroughly recommend if you like space/marine advanced tech. 10/10 love it
The gunny refuses to leave a marine behind and the other Marines fight just this hard to find their own. And of all things the SOG the Republic and the Marines must come together to fight the evil that will destroy civilization and mankind.
Gates of Hell picks up where Book 2 left off. A great read from cover to cover. The gunny and his fellow Marines are on the run from everyone but still fighting for themselves and the survival of the human race.
The attack of the multidimensional monster. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. I loved following the marines, as they run and gun their way through ragnorak. I look forward to the next one.
I didn’t think you could squeeze more action into one of these books but I was wrong. The story is still consistent as are the characters. Lots happening and more central characters to follow. Nice work.
This is one of the best action adventure science fiction. Horror novels, I have ever read the technology is on point in the attention to detail is awesome.
