I do like this set of books. They're not all great puzzles, and sometimes I like my solution better than the given one, and sometimes I don't have even a guess, but they're all fun. Shannon is a good reteller, and I appreciate the appendix of sources. I still don't like the pictures though....
A super-quick read with 14 puzzles to solve in story form. They argue a certain non-linear logic, occasionally faulty, but make the reader think and re-think.
"Birbal was a jestor, counselor, and fool to the great Moghul emperor, Akbar. The villagers loved to talk of Birbal's wisdom and cleverness, and the emperor loved to try to outsmart him. One day the emperor drew a line across the floor. 'Birbal,' he ordered, 'you must make this line shorter. But you cannot erase any bit of it!' Everone present thought the emperor had finally found a way to outsmart Birbal. It was clearly an impossible task. Yet within moments the emperor and everyone present had to agree that Birbal had made the line shorter without erasing any part of it. How could this be?"
Fun, short folktale-like stories w/ a little riddle to solve. We read them all at the dinner table one night. I am still smarter than my kids, but my husband is smarter than me (and he's always correcting my grammar!)
