Felt like this book gave me a lot of information on what I’m supposed to be doing which is useful. But I still do not know how to implement much of it in my teaching practice. Maybe that’s not able to be learned from a book. At times also felt the authors looked down on very normal teachers with very normal critiques of their professions. Often had a holier than thou feel.

This is my second time reading this textbook, and I believe I got much more from it this time around than the first time (probably because I read it of my own volition and wasn’t being forced to as part of a class). There are many useful ideas that I plan to implement in my classroom. There are important reminders throughout the book that benefit new and veteran teachers alike. I imagine I’ll be grabbing my copy often in the future to revisit some of the units. I also enjoyed the QR codes throughout the book that direct the reader to online resources.

Excellent source for tips and tricks with examples.

UNIT A: Basic Understandings the Teacher, Chapters 1-5
My Biggest Take Away: The effective teacher has a profound impact in student achievement, begins with the end in mind, and is ready with a plan/script the first day of school.

UNIT B: Positive Expectations, Chapters 6-9
My Biggest Take Away: Invite students to learning before the school year begins and at the door each morning/class period.

UNIT C: Classroom Management, Chapter 10-17
My Biggest Take Away: Classroom management is organization, not discipline. Have a procedure for anything and everything.

UNIT D: Lesson Mastery, Chapter 18-21
My Biggest Take Away: Begin with the end in mind: after writing objectives, write sets of questions for each objective prior to start the lesson. Teach, Assess, Reteach, Reassess, repeat

UNIT E: Future Understandings - The Professional, Chapter 22-23
My Biggest Take Away: CHOOSE, don't decide. Be relentless in your drive to improve

As someone who is student teaching, I found this text very beneficial. It is loaded with information that I will be able to use in my future classroom. In the text, I do wish that they provided more details and examples to use in the classroom

This book was helpful overall. It was very repetitive (like most good teachers). I didn’t particularly care for the layout (the pages are busy), but it was easy to navigate and find information you need.

I read most of the chapters from this book in my Creating a Positive Classroom class, and it taught me so much information! I am definitely going back to this book to look for tips and tricks!

This book gave me good ideas about how to manage a classroom. The first half was great, then it got tedious and I lost interest.

I skim read this for an assignment, but I knkw it would be helpful later on for classroom/student management especially in a school setting.

This book was a great place to start of your looking for ways to better manage your classroom. I was definitely able to learn more strategies to manage my classroom. I would have liked it to be less testimony and more strategies.

I've reread my copy several times. It was the second edition. I decided to order the newest edition to check it out. Most of this book is amazing. As a veteran teacher I still learned new things as well as getting validated for the things I already do.. The only thing in the book I disagree with is the standard of professional dress.
