It's Totally Platonic

Rate this book
After a three year long relationship ends, after Cam comes out as trans, Camden’s life is derailed a bit. He starts isolating himself even more from people and stops doing as much to be social. On his 24th birthday his best friend decides that enough is enough and they are going to have their seventeenth year of birthday traditions and during the festivities they come up with a plan to get Cam back to his old self and get him out there again.

After numerous failed social situations, and Cam not wanting to do anything still, he decides to try online places to make friends. Just. Friends. Strictly platonic. They quickly hit it off with a boy named Elijah and the two boys start talking every day. The downside? Eli lives twelve hours away, works third shift, and everyone thinks they are in love with each other. It is strictly platonic, right?

ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE READ

I sat and read the entirety of this book in one sitting. It completely captured my attention and told a sweet romance story unlike anything else in the market right now. The characters are inclusive and relatable. The LGBTQA+ representation is something that lacks in the industry, but that this book captures perfectly. The book has a few minor errors that weren’t caught in the editing process, but that happens from time to time. You can tell how much effort the author put in to really make their audience feel seen and included. I could relate to so many instances of doubting my own sexuality, and some of the traumatic experiences that Cam went through. It’s such an important experience to be able to put yourself in the character’s shoes, and really relate to them. I feel the author created this experience, and executed it flawlessly. I highly recommend this book, and am looking forward to what you produce in the future, Alex.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn’t get into it. I was having a hard time connecting with the characters. Unfortunately I had to dnf this story at ten percent. I do think the bases for the storyline is cute and the author does a fantastic job with the lgbtq+ and autism representation. There are a few mistakes throughout the story but I don’t think they’re big enough to hinder the story.

I loved the LGBTQIA+ rep in this book. It was a great representation that not everyone is a heteronormative person, and it was also a great rep for autism too. I loved the relationships in the book too, especially between Cam and Ari - best friend relationships are life. This was a great book and I really hope we get a sequel. ❤️

I loved this sweet and funny love story. I’m going to try to do this without spoilers, because I absolutely think this book is an important story we should all read.

I loved the diversity and inclusion of so many different characters. This was my first story with a trans man as the lead and I adored the honest look into his brain and relationships. Despite the difficulties that came around Cam’s coming out, I also loved the support his friends gave him. Reading about a fellow ND brain also scratched an itch. It’s refreshing to see a main character who approaches situations and problems in a way that mirrors my own. Also there are ferrets. Totally adorable.

With a little bit of fine tuning and another set of editor eyes this book would be a 5 star! This story is such a refreshing and heart warming read. I loved every page!

This book by Alex Kramer is a wonderful debut novel. It explores the differences between platonic and romantic relationships. It shows how even with a platonic relationship, you can experience the intimacy of cuddling without it having to lead to anything else. It explores the true meaning of consent. It explores asexuality and being transgender. All very valuable things to discuss in this day and age.

The characters are well-rounded and believable. The setting descriptions are just right. Enough that you can envision the environment but not so many that it's overwhelming. There are a few rookie mistakes such as not resolving a small side bit, some proofreading issues, etc. But overall, this is an excellent debut work from a new author!

I highly recommend it!

I got this book as an ARC, but didn’t get around to reading it until it was published. (Sorry, Alex!) I promised him a review and here it is! For a first-time published book centered around inclusivity and LGBTQ+ representation, this book checked all the boxes! I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the trans community, as well as the autism community. The characters were so easy to love and Alex did a great job developing them as the story progressed.

My only suggestion/critique was that sometimes the chapters seemed to abruptly end or the background information/side conversation seemed to take away from the storyline.

Overall, this one was a quick, enjoyable read! If you’re looking for a cute rom-com book featuring representation, this is the one!!

I got this book as an ARC, and I am glad this was my first one!!
The characters felt real in a way most characters from books don't. The conversation they had felt like conversations my friends and I have had. Their actions and words didn't feel forced or too correct in that fictional kind of way. It felt more like looking in on a real life.

We follow Cam post break up. Their break up slump was super relatable and I felt myself in my feels over it. Although I couldn't relate to all the parts of the book, I felt like it showed LGBTQ+ and disability issues in a true, relatable way for those who are effected by them.
10/10 will read again.

ARC Provided in Exchange for an Honest Review -

It was so nice to read something featuring characters from the LGBTQ community with identities we don't see all too often. I've never seen an author dare to use double-pronouns for a character, let alone a MC, and honestly love the way it's done in It's Totally Platonic. The representation in this book is absolutely fantastic, everything was handled in an obviously caring way, and it was like a breath of fresh air to see an author daring to put rep out there like it's not been in the mainstream.

It was interesting but also too much. You have three siblings one aromantic/asexual, one trans/nonbinary with plethora of othere issues and one lesbian with other issues. What is a chance of that happening? Aslo mcs first bf was also trans, then they just randomly meet another trans person. Just too much in too small a pool of ppl for me. Also it seemed to me they were acting more like fifteen yo than 24 yo.

Oh hey, I wrote this book. This book was a huge cathartic release for me for a lot of things and I'm thankful that I'm now in a stable relationship where this story was based off of. I can't wait for everyone to read it.

This was so absolutely beautifully written. It deals very well with real post breakup issues and the cast was a plethora of LBGTQ folx. None of them felt forced or written just because, they all felt so loved and real. Would definitely read more from this author as well!

Story-wise, it was good, but the writing needs too much editing.
