In 1969, at the height of the Viet Nam War, four American military and State Department brats spend their last year of high school on an American military base in Ankara, Turkey. Rampant drug use and innocent lapses of judgment combine to produce emotional scars that will last their lifetimes.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. Any book about Vietnam deals with a rough subject matter. This novel was about TJ and being an American dependent abroad in Turkey due to his father being stationed there. TJ ends up very involved in the drug culture. I really enjoyed the character's growth throughout the novel. I would recommend this to anyone that is interested in books about wars or being a teen in that time period.
I received this book through the goodreads first reads giveaway. It was an amazing read. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because at least twice that I remember, it felt like the story just cut off when I really wanted to know more. Give me the "Director's Cut" of this story, and I will be a happy woman. : )
I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway as well. I thought it was a wonderful debut novel for Slagle. The story is a unique look into the teenage world during Vietnam. It is a great coming of age tale in a not so common world.
I have received a free copy of this book through a GoodReads First Reads giveaway. A great read, made even more impressive by the fact that this is Slagle's first work of fiction. The worst thing I can say is I wish the book was longer. Absolutely immersive and difficult to put down.
