Spends a fair amount of time and space describing what it is not: A complete study of English; instead enough ground is covered to create a set of rules and to cordon off a particular grammar of English, thus leaving a remainder which Chomsky and Halle consider generative and universal. The text itself is heavily symbolic and if you don't already know that language (I didn't) it takes a while to internalize the lingo. Reminded me of learning symbolic and modal logic. On the fun side, I really enjoyed the study of stresses, rhymes, and sounds. Fascinating to see language I take for granted broken down and studied syllable by syllable. Increases my appreciation for how stress placement changes sound. And how amazing that we handle all this vocal complexity without thinking about it? At least until trying to learn a new language.
