Third time’s the charm, right? You don't always get another chance... unless you've just accidentally stolen some primordial essence from an eldritch horror that: (A) can bend time, and (B) was too busy eating another demigod to notice the loss.
Justin Thyme is trying to be a better man, using his newly-expanded powers to give humanity a fighting chance in the 9,947th Pan-Universal Gladiatorial Games. He's not just grinding out those levels and kicking monster ass, but he's also putting down murderers like nobody's business. Hell, Earth looks like it might even have a real shot at making it this time around!
Except that someone isn't too happy with Justin's meddling in the games--someone powerful and working from the shadows to tear down everything he's been building up.
From strangely overgeared scalefolk assassins to suspiciously-timed accusations putting him out of commission at critical times, Justin soon finds out that a sharp sword and a thick shield won't be enough when you're playing in the big leagues. He'll need all the help he can get, even if that help comes from some pretty unsavory sources.
Will Justin stand by his morals, standing his ground in the face of adversity? Or will he decide that no compromise is too great when even his most egregious time-bending exploits aren't enough to save the day?
*ChronoTemplar 2 is a dark, crunchy litRPG with lots of stats, skills and battles, for those who love action and complex characters.
I want to start with a defense of this series’ premise. It’s different from a lot of novels in this genre, the mc isn’t a boilerplate average ‘imagine this person is you’ milquetoast meh (But dont get me wrong, I still eat that milquetoast shit up). Instead, he’s a genuinely unrelatable bad person and his crappy choices from before the book started repeatedly ruin his ability to save humanity. Totally understand that people don’t like that the main character was a bad bad garbage man in previous lives and do not want to read the series because of that. You do you. However, I don’t think this book valorizes the terrible things the mc did in previous timelines. And, I think the book forces the mc to contend with those poor choices in a way that elevates the series from light novel to light novel with more complex themes/issues than I expected. I guess I just wanted to defend the choice to have a bad person trying to better (but doesn’t really know how or have good examples) as the mc. Are all of the highly nuanced, extremely provocative issues the author deals with treated with perfect sensitivity? Absolutely not! If I were the author, would I have touched that shit with a ten foot pole in a time loop litrpg? Fuck no! But I appreciate a (seemingly) well intentioned big swing.
My real objection is the spartan plot construction, and reliance on info dumps after time skips, I think these books would benefit from a little more meat on the bone.
This is the 2nd book. Each book seems to deal with a new looped timeline. The first book starts with his second loop. Each loop he gets more powerful, but it is nothing compared to those he is arrayed against. I thought the loop would get old, but so far, I'm enjoying each loop and its associated massive changes. Justin (the MC) is a dark hero on a redemption journey. His first timeline he was corrupt amoral killer. Each subsequent loop, he tries to save humanity both from itself and the bored super things that have decided to play games with all of humanity and other beings forced into this war. Altering the laws of physics. Interesting story to this point.
Did we really need a racist, rap*st, cannibalist and murderer as the MC of this series? He didn't a deserve a chance at redemption, let alone multiple chances. Additionally, his companions exhibit equally disturbing traits - one enjoys consuming human hearts, another engages in sexual assault after torturing women, and their other friend is a pedophilice piece of trash who did horrible things to kids. Moreover, the portrayal of Muslims as rap*sts adds another layer of troubling content to this book. The sheer amount of absurdity and offensive material in this book was honestly overwhelming. I was enjoying listening to the audiobook but the author kept adding more and more crazy stuff. What a shame.
The first book was dry, putting all the focus on levels and world building. So starting over from scratch already at a high level let this book focus on the character. That is the problem. The ranting at the start of book one is very true as the MC reveals his complete lack of any critical thinking. His lousy attitude, his terrible planning, it all shows him as being pathetic and lacking. The further in you get, the more you grow to hate having to read about the MC. By the end I was rooting for the lizards to wipe out all humans.
4.5 stars (seriously goodreads, give us 1/2 points on the scale). Pretty dark story overall and the MC constantly talking like a hayseed didn't help matters but interesting nonetheless.
This one ends in an curious place. The story could easily wrap up now, or move on to see what the evolution of Justin's powers will bring to his 4th timeline. I'm unsure of the author's plans, but I'll read a third book should it appear.
I’ve always read on a kindle and never bothered reviewing before, but this book is amazing! It never leaves the reader bored, and rather than just having some op MC bs Burt expertly limits Justin with higher powers that he can only beat through wit. 11/10 would recommend. It’s dark in a good way, unless u r that dork who got offended by the racism of calling a goblin a greenskin.
I love this concept and how the author executes his premise of time travel and LitRPG. Hero is powerful but not completely OP to the point of needing plot armor and cheap literary tricks to make the story work. Love the addition at the end and look forward to the next installation of the series.
Well isn't that interesting. This has been an entertaining series. Rehashes, renovations, new twists, and progression. Each time learning more and more from what has happened in previous giving us essentially new stories each time going over the same points. I can't wait to see what happens next. Or, how things that have already happened will now play out. Keep it up!
I quite like this story, there are a lot of twists and turns, and Justin is generally a likeable guy. The story seems to be progressi g well, though there doesn't seem to be any attainable end in site.
Enjoyed the book but I really hope the groundhog day theme does not continue in each book. The world building was interesting and I liked seeing how the MC changed as the book went on.
This book has the main character become reluctant ally with a white supremacy group. While he hates doing it and pushes back against their rhetoric just hearing the rhetoric they were spouting ruined any enjoyment I could get from the book. Did not finish.
4 stars on the story, lost a star for the narrator. I dunno what it is about that narrator (maybe a combination of his tone of voice and accent?), but it annoys me to listen to the guy.
