Somehow I've ended up blackmailing a girl into pretending to be my girlfriend.
Let me back up.
I've known Charity since high school. Well, we went to the same exclusive prep school, anyway. We weren't friends, though.
Now we're at the same university, and her friend group keeps crossing paths with mine, much to her obvious dismay. Given how vocal she is about disliking me, it's become a hobby of mine to needle her more anytime the opportunity presents itself. She makes it so easy, getting all red and fiery every time I make even a halfhearted effort to rile her up.
She's a little spitfire. And maybe I'm a masochist, but I kinda dig it.
Problem is, she clearly hates me. I only make it worse when she begs me to keep a secret I stumble upon, and instead of saying sure, no problem, I tell her she has to clean my apartment. Then one of my teammates discovers her there, assumes we're dating, and before I know it ...
We are. Or at least we're pretending to.
Problem is, I actually like spending time with her, even though she hates my guts. Except the longer we spend time together, the less she seems to hate me after all ...
And the line between pretend and reality starts to blur.
Can we overcome our terrible beginning and make our fake relationship real? Or will all our secrets tear us apart in the end?
Personal Foul is a full length standalone enemies to lovers romance featuring a hot, bossy football players and the shy girl from high school he blackmails into being his girlfriend. Full of heat and heart with an HEA guaranteed!
Jerica MacMillan has been reading romance since she stumbled into the paperback section of the library as a middle schooler. And it's been an ongoing love affair ever since!

This is my first book by Jerica MacMillan and honestly, I’ve read better. The first part of the book was slow and I just couldn’t see the two protagonists ever getting on the same page. The second half of the book was better with the characters finally coming of age and vowing to be better people, but it seemed too late. Also, the ending wasn’t satisfying to me. I just didn’t feel these two would have a happily ever ending what with their differences and personal family issues.
Dylan is very unlikable with his arrogance and sleazy way of blackmailing a girl who is going through a bad time in her life. He thinks it’s funny to see how far he can go to get her riled up and promises to keep quiet about her father’s insider trading if she cleans his apartment in a tiny maid outfit. He claims he’s liked her since high school, but considering he was part of a group that made her life hell, I find that hard to believe. Yes, he does start to change and apologizes later, but he didn’t redeem himself in my eyes.
Charity has a chip on her shoulder with the way she lies to her new friends and hides her family’s new wealth. She also assumed people’s feelings and tended to write them off. Yes, she was bullied in high school, but she promised herself she would make new friends who understood her. What does she do? She doesn’t tell her roommate and BFF anything about herself for 3 years. She does need to learn to stand up for herself and just tell Dylan to fuck off, but she lets him walk all over her. She does finally open up and come clean to everyone, but I was disappointed how she lets Dylan’s asshole parents walk all over her.
Though Charity’s roommate was a bit overwhelming with her pursuit of a football player who wasn’t into her, I liked her dedication and support for her friend Charity. Charity’s sister, Hope gives out good advice and her adorable daughter Grace is a hoot with her lovely tea parties. Dylan’s sister is a spoiled princess, but she is an instant Charity fan and loves her brother.
Unfortunately, this romance fell short for me. I was hoping Dylan and Charity would grow more but became discouraged at their childish demeanor and unacceptable behavior.
Thank you to Ms. MacMillan for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
Charity & Dylan went to the same private high school, and he was part of the popular group who made her life hell during that time. She believed that when she went away to college she would be able to start fresh, but turned out, Dylan, is at the same college (poor Charity). She does her best to avoid him, but the fates aren't that kind to her when roommate starts crushing on a football player, so she's put in his path again. To add even more insult to injury, he overhears something she shouldn't have, and he is blackmailing her now. This is where I got stuck, I didn't appreciate his actions whatsoever despite the fact that he's crushing on her in his inner monologue because his tasks are humiliating so I didn't ever completely warm up to him to be honest. I will say that he started getting better so I didn't despise him by the end of it, but it was super hard for me to get past his previous actions. Despite that big issue, I kept reading without putting it down, I just called him names (with my personal foul flags) throughout like I knew him or something LOL! So yeah, at the end of the day, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Superb read. This is a fabulous Enemies to Lovers romance, were a secret that is disovered results in Dylan and Charity engaging into fake Dating. The problem is Charity hates Dylan or so she thinks...more time spent together she realises he is not what she thought he was. I really enjoyed this book and the push and pull between Dylan and Charity,I loved the way their relationship evolved and their characters grew and changed. That after a bad start things became more real than fake and their relationship turned around through honesty. I always relish Jerica's books the emotions, the angst and the steam, this book was no exception. Personal Foul is another Amazing story in this series and I loved it. Brilliant. 5 Stars.- Cat W.
Dylan and Charity get off to a rocky start and he can't quite figure out how to get out of the pickle he's gotten them into. He is right about one thing. She takes everything into herself and never lashes out at those hurting her. Trying to keep herself small so she stays off the radar. I really enjoyed Charity and Dylan's story and their journey from basically being enemies to meaning so much more to each other.
What’s a little blackmail between old acquaintances? Charity and Dylan’s complicated past makes this enemies to lovers meets fake girlfriend story a real page turner. At times their push/pull dynamic made me want to shake some sense into them. That’s when I knew I was invested in their journey to a happily ever after.
3.5 stars. As much as I wanted to like Dylan, there was something about him that was so off putting to me. The book started off a little slow, but I enjoyed the enemies to lovers aspect. I didn’t enjoy how Dylan was blackmailing Charity, but I did appreciate the character growth in this. Tension and steam were great, I just didn’t think these two were right for each other. *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was not happy with how the relationship between Charity and Dylan. I don't love the "pull her hair because you like her" trope. I was like how is Charity going to be able to fall in love with Dylan with this behavior?
Luckily, Dylan was able to turn this around with honesty and I was very happy about that - I was also happy with the direction and the cuteness of Charity and Dylan's relationship development
Thankfully, I ended up loving this story - Charity and Dylan's love story was cute
I did think the end conflict was a bit much but I was still abroad with this story
Personal Foul is the sixth book in Jerica Macmillan's addictive Marycliff Football series and is Dylan and Charity's enemies to lovers story. Coming to Marycliff University was a fresh start for Charity, a world away from the bullies that taunted her all throughout high school and she could choose who knew what about her and when. But what wasn't part of her plan was Dylan Thompson, one of the most popular guys in school and who was friends with the people who made her high school experience miserable. Charity cannot stand Dylan and makes her feelings and her distaste for him perfectly clear and even though they're no longer in high school anymore she cannot forget what happened. So when Dylan overhears a conversation he shouldn't have, instead of agreeing to keep what he heard a secret, he decides Charity should earn his silence and become his new maid! Even though Charity is fully aware that Dylan is blackmailing her, she cannot let anyone know what he heard and agrees to be his maid even with his ridiculous idea for a uniform. Dylan doesn't want to blackmail Charity, he'll keep her secret no matter whether she cleans his home or not but he wants to spend time with her, he has always been drawn to her, ever since he first laid eyes on her but she's never given him a chance and if he needs to blackmail her to get her to see the real him then so be it! But what wasn't part of the plan was for one of Dylan's friends to see Charity at his apartment and with her wearing her maid's uniform he jumps to the wrong conclusion and presumes they are dating! Which leaves them no choice but to pretend to date, which obviously Dylan is thrilled about as they'll need to spend more time together. Seeing the real Dylan and spending so much time together is making it harder and harder for Charity to keep her walls up and not fall for he charming guy she's unexpectedly become interested in. Although things between them are supposed to be fake they cannot deny the chemistry that is between them and how much they love being around each other. "Something about Charity has always called to me, even back in high school. I ignored it then, but I've spent enough time around her now that I can acknowledge it. She always had me hooked without even trying." But things aren't going to be easy for them, Charity comes from a completely different world than Dylan and even though she's lived in that world for a few years, a scandal threatens their new found relationship. Can Dylan and Charity find a way past the obstacles standing in their way? Read Personal Foul now to find out! I really enjoyed Personal Foul and loved Dylan and Charity! They were such great characters that drew you in from the very first page! I cannot wait for the next book in this incredible series!
Personal Foul is the 6th book in what I think of as the Marycliff U 2.0 series. This new adult enemies to lovers story holds well as a complete stand alone so it is not necessary to have read any of the other books in the series.
3.5 ⭐
Ok- so I'm a little torn over this book. I love Jerica MacMillan and have been devouring her Marycliff U books since the beginning and that has extended to this new generation of Marycliff, but I really was not all in with Charity and Dylan for about the first half of this book. I did really enjoy the second half so much- I mean I read this book over the course of one day- but despite how much I adored the second half of the book the start of the story kept it from being a 4 or 5 star book for me.
I got a small snippet of Charity and Dylan at the end of Offsides- and I was excited to see why Charity had such a hatred for Dylan. Personal Foul gives some insight on that and the fact that these two went to high school together and Dylan's friend group ridiculed and bullied her all 4 years. College was supposed to be Charity's fresh start- only her best friend is crushing on one of Dylan's teammates throwing them together more often than she'd like. When Dylan overhears Charity's family life imploding- he uses her fear of the truth getting out to his advantage.
That is where I had some issue with the story. The way Dylan blackmails and finds ways to essentially torture Charity for his amusement and his kindergarten crush tactics then act completely blindsided when she feels taken advantage of and bullied was a little ridiculous. Charity wasn't much better with her behavior at times either- she kind of walked around with a chip on her shoulder at times because of her family's new wealth. She also tended to quickly write people off and assume their feelings.
That second half of the story though- where Dylan actually thinks about his actions and how they might influence Charity to feel... I was *swooning* He went from the villian to the sweetest and supportive boyfriend. The playfulness between Dylan and Charity was adorable, heartwarming while he was her rock and confidant as her life hit bump after bump with the little added side of heat because when she didn't hate him the tensions and chemistry between them was fantastic.
I really enjoyed the way that Personal Foul wrapped up- it felt perfect that it wasn't 100% perfect, you know? And the teaser for Charity's best friend/roommate Isabelle... I can't wait!
Young love and all the feels that go with it Personal Foul by Jerica MacMillan is a wonderful, angsty new adult romance with tons of elements… nerve-wracking secrets, nail biting intentions, eye rolling impulsiveness, love to hate/hate to love confusion, failure to communicate, run and hide, pulling pigtails antics, preconceived assumptions, and more. All of that, plus the wonderful characters made Personal Foul a fantastic page turner. I never wanted to put this book down as I just had to know what these two were going to do or say next. Dylan has a real problem with impulsive reactions and often what he intended is perceived in exactly the opposite way he intends. Thus the pulling pigtails reference. In truth, Dylan really likes Charity but goes about it all wrong. So wrong in fact, this particular hero makes it a little difficult to like him. He really is a bully who is oblivious to how his words and actions truly affect Charity. Charity is also a wonderful characters, but not without her own flaws. She hides so much of herself, that even though she has a best friend, she is really all alone when she really needs extra support that a true friend would gladly give. The plot of this book first pits Dylan and Charity against one another. Then Charity is compelled to keep secrets and more lying ensues except with her enemy, Dylan, of all people. So throw into the mix forced proximity, blackmail, and fake dating and it would seem to be a recipe for disaster. What Charity doesn’t count on is Dylan finding his conscious and actually supporting, comforting and caring for her in her times of need. Overall, this emotional whirlwind will provoke some strong feelings. It made me wonder if Dylan was redeemable and then had me rooting for him and Charity to find a way around their differences. While this author makes these characters work for happiness that promises HEA, love wins out over any and all obstacles put in their way. Quite a feat considering it was more than a few! I read an ARC of this book via Grey’s Promotions and voluntarily share my review.
I'm a fan of Jerica MacMillan and these hot athletes of Marycliff University but I feel conflicted about Dylan and Charity's story.
Charity and Dylan went to high school together but they were in different social circles. She was bullied through her high school years. She vowed to have friends when she started at Marycliff University and she succeeded... until her best friend wants to hook up with one of Dylan's teammate and begs Charity to go with her at their meetings.
I think Dylan has had a crush on Charity since high school so when he has a chance to rope her closer, he takes it. The blackmailing part is understandable but I don't quite understand Dylan's thinking method and his action. He wants her attention and fight him back so he bullies her?!? Really?!? He is in a university now not a 5 year old boy though.
And Charity, Gosh, she is the most hard-to-love female character I've ever read. I understand that she has an issue but her behavior isn't acceptable. And she keeps her secrets for years!
With Dylan's childish behavior and Charity's unacceptable behavior, I feel like I'm struggling. I want to know more about Dylan and Charity in high school which a prologue would help. But since the story starts with their reunion at the university, I keep thinking that I'm missing something.
And the bully part is dragged to long... I think Jerica MacMillan wants us, readers, to understand Dylan's motive but slow burn in their case is not good. The story is improved after they finally give into their attractions though but then there is Dylan's family in their way. At some point, I think they aren't set to be together.
In conclusion, I think this book is too much bully, too much heartbreak, and too much drama but I can't deny that aside from Dylan's strange behavior, he is swoon-worthy and smart so 3.5 stars it is.
The beginning of this review is going to make me sound like I didn't like this book, so I wanted to just say that I loved and devoured this book at the start. However, when I started it, I really did not like Dylan. I wasn't a fan of the blackmailing storyline in the beginning but I loved how it turned out. I'm so happy I continued reading because Dylan is an absolute sweetheart and I just had the same misconception of Dylan as Charity did which is testament to the writing in this book.
Charity starts this book off with finding out her father is being investigated by the SEC and Dylan overhears this. Dylan and Charity went to high school together so they know each other and he knows who her dad is, unlike the rest of Charity's college friends. Charity is desperate to keep this information hidden so she volunteers herself to Dylan to keep the secret. He trades cleaning his home everyday in exchange for keeping the secret (the blackmail).
Since Dylan is home when Charity is cleaning they get to know each other and find out they actually enjoy being around each other. Feelings grow, but there is still a ton of issues with Dylan's parents and how Charity's dad's scandal comes out which makes it hard for them to continue their relationship. Dylan has to decide whether or not he wants to go against his parents and Charity has to decide if she wants to deal with her relationship with her Dad becoming public once she starts dating Dylan.
The first half of the book, I just couldn't get into Charity and Dylan ... but the 2nd half of the book was a totally different story! I felt sorry for Charity when she has to pay for her father's sins. I also felt sorry for Dylan because he doesn't really have a say in his life as his parents have it all planned out for him. That being said, I really didn't like Dylan at first. I hated that he bullied Charity in University ... it just made him seem so immature. But I did warm up to him later in the book. The steamy scenes were ... well, very steamy! I can't wait for the next book in this series.
Dylan and Charity went to a private high school together. Dylan was a football player and in the popular group. While Charity was new to the private school system and was considered an outcast by Dylan's group. Because Charity didn't go to an Ivy League University, she was hopeful to have a better experience in university. But when she sees Dylan at Marycliff University, she tries to stay as far away from him as possible. When her roommate is crushing on a football player, Charity is dragged into that world again. When Dylan overhears a private conversation Charity is having with her mother, he decides to insert himself into her world. It doesn't take long for these enemies to become friends and lovers.

This is my first book by Jerica McMillan. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised! I will definitely not be sleeping on her books going forward.
Dylan was part of the in-crowd at Skyline Academy…the same crowd that made Charity’s life a living hell. While he didn’t actively participate in the bullying, his silence spoke volumes, making a lasting (awful) impression that she carried to Marycliff University. Being that they both attend the same school, Charity tries to steer clear of the football star. But when Dylan finds out about her family’s scandalous secret, she agrees to do whatever he wants in exchange for his silence. At first, he suggests that she clean his apartment…but that soon morphs into him blackmailing her into a fake relationship. Even though Dylan is her high school nemesis, Charity can’t help but see a different side of him the more time they spend together…a side she starts to fall for.
I’m going to be real with you. I’m pretty sure enemies-to-lovers is becoming my jam. Usually, I like my MMC in an E2L to be at least a little bit psycho, but I’m actually starting to get a soft spot for the ones that aren’t quite as rough around the edges. Please don’t get me wrong…I still simp for a good sadist. But these fluffier books are giving me the warm fuzzies.
This book was funny and cute and a little sad. This story is about Dylan and a young woman named Charity.
Dylan and Charity knew each other in high school. They weren’t friends. The people he hung out with bullied her. They end up going to the same college. Charity isn’t very friendly to Dylan for certain reasons. She is talking on the phone one night and Dylan happened to overhear her talking. Her father is being charged with tax evasion. She believes that Dylan is going to tell her secret to his friends. He makes a deal with her that he will keep her secret if she cleans his apartment. He buys this adult French maid outfit in which she has to wear to clean in. Dylan was trying to be funny. One of his friends comes over and suddenly they have to pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend. They end up going to this ax throwing place which was funny. The banter between Dylan and Charity is quite funny. Dylan says her name wrong on purpose to push her buttons, he also calls her “spitfire” and she calls him “cookie”. They end up spending time together studying. They do have a miscommunication problem before the story ends. I felt bad for Charity with her dad’s problems. I liked how Dylan and Charity were together when they started hanging out together studying and being together. I enjoyed reading this book.
Wow, Personal Foul has all the drama, fake dating, enemies to lovers, and insane chemistry! Dylan is a football player and knows Charity from high school, but when fate throws him a moment with her at college, he takes it. Now he’s blackmailed Charity into a deal in order to help her out. And from the moment she agrees these two throw it at each other so much they start to blur the lines and can’t keep things straight anymore. The further these two fall into their secrets and blackmail, the harder it’s to tell what’s real and what’s just a part of the deal. Dylan wants more from Charity and that includes riling her up, but Charity can’t seem to move on from the past and she gets caught up in her lies. As Dylan and Charity try to navigate their predicament, these two will have you in the edge of your seat waiting to see if these two can move past all the deals and secrets or will it all be just too much? Don’t miss out on Personal Foul.
I do love good enemies-to-lovers college romances, and Jerica Macmillan produced one that was full of twists and turns, some great laugh-out-loud moments, as well as some deeply moving moments, Charity and Dylan don't get along for Charity it started in high school when popular, Dylan was part of the group that had the mean girl that bullied Charity but now at college Charity steers clear of Dylan as much as she can but unfortunately for her Dylan has overhead a conversation that Charity wishes to keep a secret from her friends giving Dylan the opportunity to do a little blackmailing, however, the more time the pair spend together the more their releases that might have been wrong about the other, but their past and Charity's secret and Dylan's family snobby family still are stirring up trouble as this budding romance.
Dylan and Charity are two people who cannot stand the other, so we get to see more into the why of this duo. We find out about how Dylan and his buddies just made her high school life a complete h3ll and this causes her to resent them. When she is off at college thinking this will be her new start the last thing, she expects nor wants is to see Dylan, yet life has a way of throwing these two together. Charity was a tough one to crack and I understand why she felt this way, but at times it seemed like instead of getting to know someone she immediately made preconceived judgements about them. Dylan bless his heart just went about things all wrong and once he realized how terrible he truly was it felt like he tried to right some of those wrongs. This story and series have been emotional, fun, and growth ones I have enjoyed and can’t wait to see where we go next.
Brilliant. 5 Stars.
I have been a fan of Jerica’s books for awhile now. This book was no exception. Charity is self conscious about her high school and now college transitions. She never feels like she fits in. Now she learned some not so great family news and is devastated. Unfortunately college football player Dylan over hears her phone conversation. Now Dylan is using it against her. Immature college behavior at its best! Dylan and Charity both rubbed me the wrong way at the beginning, but eventually grew on me. I enjoyed the back and forth banter and the hot chemistry. These two had a lot of emotional baggage to get rid of and they both really matured. I look forward to reading more books by this author. I love Her writing style and characters!
I have to admit it took me awhile to get into this book. To me Dylan didn’t paint himself in a very good light at the start. And as I struggled with him a bit, I also struggled with Charity for different reasons as well. But what I came to realize is with how that part of the story played out it really set up the second half of the book extremely well. Both Charity and Dylan evolved so much by the time the book ended and the way I felt about each of them at the start was so very different to what I thought by the time I finished. I honestly take my hat off to Jerica for making me feel the gamut of emotions reading this book and I can’t wait to get my hands on her next release. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book

Charity is looking for a fresh start at Marycliff University where nobody knows her past which includes some turmoil in her family and her less than ideal high school days behind. The one thing she hadn’t counted on was that Dylan would be there as well as he is using the secret she doesn’t want revealed against her.
Dylan appears to live a charmed life and college seems to be no different since he is a star on the football field. When he learns something about Charity he decides to use it to his advantage however neither expected to develop feelings for each other and they are about to find out that secrets have a way of being exposed whether you want them to or not.
I did enjoy the evolution of both characters as Charity finds herself in a difficult situation through no fault of her own while Dylan must decide the future he wants and who he wants to share it with.
I really liked this new book from @jericamacmillan! It’s an enemies to lovers fake dating college football romance..so basically three tropes I love all rolled into one. Dylan and Charity have known each other since high school but didn’t run in the same circle. They reconnect in college but Charity remembers she hates Dylan. Dylan though has always been intrigued by her. He overhears a conversation he wasn’t supposed to and ends up blackmailing her into cleaning for him. Their relationship certainly has some interesting moments but the more time they spend together the more they like each other. But they have some baggage to overcome. I thought the storyline was interesting, the characters were fun…Charity and Dylan had good banter and good chemistry. Good read!
Charity and football star Dylan, went to the same exclusive prep school, and ae now attending the same university, where her friend and his friends socialize, so she cannot avoid the person she tries to stay clear off. Dylan certainly knows how to push Charity’s buttons, and when he discovers her family secret, he blackmails her into becoming his fake girlfriend. The more time they spend together, Charity sees there is more to Dylan than meets the eye. This is a well written story which is an enemies / lover’s romance, with secrets, drama, family, angst, bullying, emotions, friendships, and love, which leads to a heartfelt and steamy page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Dylan and Charity were a fun and engrossing read. From their playful banter to those three magical words, their story had me hooked.
I really liked that Dylan was aware of everything and still supported her. He was her safe space while her world was being turned upside down. Sure, there were a few things between them and from them individually that I disagreed with—that I would never accept in my own life—but I can see why things happened the way they did.
Isabelle, rightfully, was really hurt by Charity's deceit, but, I'm glad the girls worked out their issues. It will be fun reading about the dynamics with her new roommate!
I wasn't the biggest fan of Dylan in the beginning. He is attracted to Charity, but doesn't always make the best choices in his interactions with her. However, he did grow on me as the book progressed and you see him and Charity connect and move past some of their issues. The two of them did feel like actual college students who sometimes stumble or screw up a bit as they figure out love and life. It was interesting seeing how their relationship developed and moved from fake dating to the real thing.
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.
Charity and Dylan attended the same high school but they were far from being friends. Charity had been picked on from the same group that Dylan hung with. Now they are at the same university and somehow their friend groups keep crossing paths. Dylan overhears a conversation and uses it to his advantage and one Charity hates but feels she has no choice. He gets her to clean his apt and then when a teammate assumes they are dating, Dylan throws that into the mix. He likes spending time with her but feelings aren't mutual. What happens when the lines blur? All the secrets, will that tear them apart?
I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure about Dylan at first as he did seem like a jerk to blackmail Charity. However, as the story goes on, I see why he did what he did (even though it was still wrong). However, he really likes Charity and we can see his struggle with whether he can have her or not. All in all, he turned out to be such a sweetheart, and I loved how he fought for her. There was so much chemistry and attraction between Charity and Dylan and I found them to be such a great couple. I cannot wait to see what Jerica MacMillan has for us next!
I received a free advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily my fair and honest review.
