THE WISHING SHELF BOOK AWARDS 5th September 2018 TITLE: My Community AUTHOR: Raven Howell, Art by Yeng Yang Star Rating: 4
‘A brightly illustrated story of how life should be in a multi-cultural community. Warm and comfy with a sweet ending. Highly recommended!’
REVIEW This is a very cosy sort of story – with the odd very sweet puppy thrown in – by Raven Howell and illustrated by Yeng Yang. It follows a family as they enjoy a typical day in a loving, multi-cultural community. For example, they visit the doctors and the vets; and they go to school. There is no dilemma here, no plot as such. Just a day in the life. The only problem is, it is not that typical. Not to many children anyway. Sadly, many children might look at such a ‘perfect’ world as is shown in this book and think ‘My world is not at all like that. The postman is never that sweet to me. And my street never looks like that. It is full of litter. And there’s no funding for my school library so they shut it.’ In this book, everything is perfect, and pretty much every character is smiling: the doctor, the vet, the postman, the mum and the dad. But, I think, what the author is trying to do is still admirable. Basically, show children how a multi-cultural community can/should work. This, I think, must be a good message for young children. Like the author, I think it is important for children who live in a broken community (and many do) to see how good things could be, and what we must all strive for. Being a very short book, it is simply written, the writing style perfect for very young children or children just beginning to read. The rhyming works well; the rhythm most of the time. I would think any parent who is looking for a lightly written, story for children aged 4 – 7 would find this fits the bill perfectly. Also, most parents will be happy to share the ‘community’ theme with young children. But, I do wonder if many of the parents who enjoy this book with a child, will be sad knowing full well that the ‘perfect’ community the book is showing hardly ever exists. Colorfully illustrated and with plenty happening to keep a child amused, this might prove very popular at bedtime. Overall Rating: Delightfully illustrated with a strong community message. My Community is a rhyming picture book written by Raven Howell and illustrated by Yeng Yang. Not only does this book introduce children to the concept of community, but it also does it in a way that challenges stereotypes in the age of diversity, too. My Community emphasizes the importance of community, describing the different aspects of one particular local neighborhood.
The book begins with a young, pale-skinned girl with red hair waking up in her room. A large picture frame in her room features a photo of her mom, who looks simply like her, and an African-American dad. On the next page, we are introduced to her brown-skinned younger sister. Parents and teachers will particularly appreciate that this book celebrates family diversity. It helps children develop pride in their own family at the same time they are exposed to the diversity of the world around them. Books like these help your kids understand the common theme that runs through all families.
Raven takes children on a tour through a young girl’s vibrant neighborhood introducing them to the important people who make our communities cleaner, safer, and better. Each person has an important job to do including the little girl’s dad, who is the mayor of the town. Along the way, kids learn about the people and places that make up their community and what it means to be a part of one. They are introduced to local garbage pickers, neighbors, mail carrier Juan, bus driver Mr. Lee, Chef Mario at the pizza parlor, police chief Cho, teachers, librarians, and a vet and a doctor (both women). Each page has bright, colorful illustrations that are full of detail. The pictures help tell the story. Highlighted by Yang’s energetic, jewel-like illustrations, My Community inspires readers to explore and appreciate their own community. Racial and ethnic diversity is celebrated on every page, and the rhyming text of Raven will inspire children and adults alike.
Final Verdict A great picture book to introduce children to different businesses, services, and members of a community. With vibrant images, children will be eager to describe what they see or create a story of their own.
What's not to love? Community, poetry, diversity, and adorable, colorful illustrations!
My Community follows a child as she interacts with her diverse family, neighbors, professionals community members throughout the day. There is Mailman Juan, Bus Driver Mr. Lee, Pizza Chef Mario, Police Chief Cho, trashmen, teacher, librarians, the vet and her pediatrician (both female), firemen, mom, and dad (the mayor).
This story in rhyme is not only a fun read which could lead to talking, drawing, and writing activities about the many communities of which we are a part—family, neighborhood, school, vacation, global—for multiple grade levels, but it could serve as a mentor text for many writing focus lessons: poetry, as it is written in quatrains and subtly filled with poetic devices (ABCB rhyme scheme, personification, alliteration); conventions (exclamation marks, commas, apostrophes employed in a variety of ways, dashes, hyphens); and word choice (trudge, flicker-flash, fleets).
I can't wait to be invited into classrooms to read this story.
Short, sweet picture book that highlights many mainstays in communities, including doctors, firefighters, teachers, librarians, etc. The child we follow throughout the day is biracial - she has a Black father who is mayor of the town and a white mother. I really like that this book is typed in dyslexic-friendly font; it's such a simple thing to do that can make a world of difference for readers with dyslexia. I wish more picture books especially did this.
A wonderful view of the community through the eyes of a child. Children will love learning about their place in their community through this beautifully illustrated picture book. I would especially recommend My Community to teachers and librarians. With its colorful artwork and cheery rhyme, this is a wonderful teaching tool for young children.
My six year old grand daughter loved this book. I received and free, autographed, personalized copy of this book. This is an adorable book all about the links in your community. Everyone works together to make one big community! It is written in rhyme which my kids always love reading aloud. . This would be perfect to read during a classroom unit on communities and occuptations. The illustrations are bold and eye catching.
My Community is a bright , cheerful book. It is filled with people of various skin tones and with names that reflect their heritages, that live and work harmoniously in the child's community. We follow the girl throughout her day as she observes and interacts positively with the mailman, bus driver, teacher, librarian and so on. A good book to share with a child.
Howell has the respectable quality of being able to write intelligently yet also accessibly, meaning that children will understand the messages whilst also improving their vocabulary and imagination. The words are complimented in an apt fashion by lovely animations. I want to be part of this utopian community!
My Community, I love this book, and the illustration are awesome, I like the fact that it shows the whole community and the love that there with this family, and following them though the course of there day. Raven Howell is a talented Author. and i do recommend it very much.
I work at a nonprofit that serves a number of early readers and/or students who are learning English. I appreciate the book's rhymes and the sparse text on each page, which doesn't overwhelm our young readers. And the positive message, of course, is always needed. Thank you Raven!
What a sweet book! It leads children around the community introducing the diverse people in it (mailman, trash man, vet, doctor, teacher, librarian, etc.) with catchy poetry and colorful pictures. It will be great to use in the community helpers unit with Pre-K!
