Disappointed

Honestly conflicted. This series has been riddled with odd choices throughout, but the story and characters have held it together despite that, and mostly I had put it down to quirks and authors choice.

In this book however, things really just fell apart for me. All of the main characters made incredibly stupid decisions at one point or another for no reason that was explained. The only one I can really excuse is Azure being exhausted and doing something stupid without thinking and having something new and shiny break before getting to use it. Every other stupid choice was inexplicable, or least made no logical sense in the narrative. It really ruined parts of the story for me and just came across as "forced bad things" rather than a natural flow of events in the narrative.

There's also a lot of inconsistent character voice going on across the series. Certain times Jin will talk like he's from Earth, then flip back into fantasy Elven style and it'sincredibly jarring. Azure dips in and out of sounding like a regular person, to sounding like he was born in The Realm too. Some of the other characters do this as well and it breaks immersion big time for me. There was a lot more consistent characterisation in the earlier books of the series. At this point its actually very difficult to get a clear idea of the main characters personalities; they are a lot less distinct as the story goes on, and Azure persistently making wtf choices when there are clear and obvious better solutions is becoming incredibly irritating to read.

As we have come to expect, this book continues from where the last book ends. If you haven't read any of the other stories, why are you looking at reviews for book 9?!? Go get and read the first one silly. If you have read through the other eight titles and, like me, have been suffering withdrawls wanting to know how Azure fares in the Deathlands, why didn't you preorder your copy? Just as fantastical and well written as the other titles in this series, it's a must if you've read any of the others. Though unlike other titles in this series we don't end with finishing with the god Luuq, there was just too much story to tell. We'll have to wait for book 10 to find out what Azure and his group are forced to do to appease Luuq and quit the Deathlands. A must read if you have any interest in LitRPG.

Phoenix Grey’s latest book The Realm Between: God of Death: A LitRPG Saga (Book 9) is a bit darker than previous books. Choice repercussions are rarely life-ending. When have you had to choose whether to die or do something evil? The God of Death makes it clear that if you don’t do what he wants, you die. The crazy thing is when you are dealing with the devil, he’s still gonna win, even if you do his bidding. And you are going to probably die anyway. It’s really hard to choose death even when what you are doing for this evil entity is very, very wrong. These are good men doing something when others would do nothing. Just another day in our hero’s lives trying to save the world. But maybe their last day. This book is a great continuation of her epic LitRPG saga. I recommend you start on this series today. This was an ARC copy and an honest review.

Book 9 of The Realm ​Between. This book feels like a builder and as the next book is the current last in the series. There is far too much it feels to conclude in one book. That said this book was more video game than ever as it was mostly running around doing a fetch quest. That stated, it wasn’t boring and there was some leveling but overall not a huge impact to the plot for the series. I still enjoyed the book and if this is the builder for book 10, then it makes sense. Warning to sensitive readers: adult content and language.

An excellent read

LitRPG is a difficult genre to get right, for me. Once again, Phoenix Grey strikes just the right balance between plot and game mechanics to keep the flow going smoothly. Little time is wasted on the protagonist's choices about your to spend character points, and of that doesn't interest you as a reader, get as easy series to get back to the dirty. The Realm Between is one of the best series, and I'll be impatiently waiting for the next book.

I liked that Azure was presented with choices that had no clear moral right. He had to choose the least bad, and I’m not sure that he always succeeded. This will definitely have repercussions on him, and the party as a whole. I’m also glad that this portion of the quest ended up being split between two books, to really explore how devious Luuq is. Is Jin really Eldyn purified? What will we learn in the house of horrors?

This series just gets better with each book. I thought I would miss Uden, but the other characters develop to fill the space left by his absence. There are a few dark scenes in this book. If it was a film, (now there is a thought) I would expect it to be rated 18+. A thoroughly enjoyable adventure.
