Bros alone on the open water – plenty of wet, gushing, salty fun to be had.
My buddy Wade is a solid guy. Maybe a little gruff, but I enjoy his company. We were really close when we were younger, but after I went to college and he got a job at a marina, we hung out less. When I lost my job and my girlfriend, he asked me if I wanted to help take his boss’s old boat down to Miami. It would take a few weeks, and he proposed it as a sort of vacation. It isn’t what I would call much of a holiday, being used to some of the nicer things in life. I got a good severance, so why not enjoy some time on the water with my bro?
The first morning I woke up and saw Wade laying out in the sun on the deck ... in the buff. He wasn’t sunbathing, but he was keeping himself quite busy. I had never thought of my friend that way, but watching him, his sun-kissed golden skin, the sparking droplets of water on his chest hair, and his more than impressive manly mast, I started to keep myself busy too. After that, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. There was just something so alluring about the man – his muscles, his gruff but kind nature, his hairy chest, and the way he filled out the front and back of his swimming trunks.
Part of the job is to clean the old boat up, and in doing so we found a stash of his boss’s racy old VHS tapes. We popped one in as a joke, but we weren’t laughing for long. Soon, Wade was the one who couldn’t keep his eyes off the obvious mast in my thin bathing suit. I offered him a closer look, and, well, let’s just say the rest of the voyage at sea is shaping up to be one of the best cruises I’ve ever been on. I just hope that when we make it to port, our friendship makes landfall with us.
Heath Grayson writes erotic fiction featuring men who've just found out there may be more to life than they ever imagined. His debut series, But We're Bros!, depicts guy friends crossing lines that bros typically don't. Heath is fascinated by the quiet moments between men, how a single stare, repeated joke, or the simple brush of a hand can turn into something much more. The first time with your good bro can change your world.
Whenever I get an email from Heath a new novella has been released, I put my current read down and turn to his. I've never been disappointed. This is by far is his best. But then again, I think I say that about all his stories His development of characters and description of the environment they are in had me feeling as if I really was one with them.
Loved the tension in this book, literally couldn't put it down! The buildup to the end was addictive. Seems like the longest story by Heath so far and the characters were developed really well. Wade was awesome and I'd love to read more about him!
I tend to love Grayson's novellas anyway. This one has a little bit of weirdness to it, the beginning is a little awkward and the end feels mighty rushed, but there is also a wonderfully astute awareness of the way that we can look down on our friends and how that can warp and destroy a relationship. It's an unexpected realness that cuts through the otherwise silly hotness of M/M romance, and it cuts to the bone. Also, this is pretty hot.
Read a few of Heath Grayson's novellas and found them all pretty decent erotica. This one was both longer and went beyond the usual sexy times (although it has plenty of those too) - some nice character sketches, more feels and a well chosen setting and timeline.
8/17 i think? “Your mom is a drug addict who fucked your dad's brother and never gave you any kind of attention 'cause she liked your sister-cousin better than you. I get it." - this is my favourite quote of the whole series. this one felt like a fever dream.
Griff has been having a rough week. His high-paying job just laid him off, and his girlfriend just dumped him. Hearing about this, his best friend from grade school, Wade, invites him to accompany him sailing a boat south to Florida. It means a couple weeks alone with each other on the sea during summer on an older boat, but they're bros, right? Well, Griff wakes up the first morning to an eyeful: bearish Wade naked, having a good time with himself. One thing leads to another and before you can say "a good time" they're having a good time together, with Wade pleasing Griff all across the Eastern Seaboard. But all good things come to an end when they have an ugly fight where all their problems come up.
Honestly I didn't like this one very much. Mostly, because Griff is not a likable character. He's cocky and he thinks he's better than everyone, especially Wade, because he made something of himself. He thinks Wade beneath him, and also treats him pretty shitty, And he uses Wade through most of the book. So I had a hard time even liking Griff. Wade wasn't a whole lot better, not saying anything about how he felt until things blew up. I get this is supposed to be dramatic and the point of the novella, but.. yeah, this just didn't work at all for me, two straight boys turning gay for each other.
I came for the spice b/c this author consistently delivers. The relationship dynamic of this couple threw me off at first. Awkward and one sided as it was a single POV. Cliff is definitely pretentious and at first I wondered why he even went on the trip. The first night they went to a bar I realized that Wade definitely had his own perspective when he told Cliff that he was ‘probably an a$*hole’ if he didn’t even know his girlfriend was going to leave him. Their dynamic progressed and as hot and steamy as it was, seemed unbalanced as became evident as their trip neared its’ end. I had no idea how they could reconcile. But as always, this author delivered. The personal insight and character growth was gratifying (but a tad rushed). I really appreciate how this author’s work is recognizable but characters and dynamics are distinct in each story I’ve read so far. I don’t give all of them a full 5 stars, but certainly a lot of them.
How much more real could this story be? The down to earth friend and the one who’s better than everyone else. Wade and Cliff are the same, but then totally not. Growing up together and neither of them born with a silver spoon, one goes off to college to get away from his upbringing and the other one builds on his passion and goes to work at a marina. When Cliff gets dumped and Wade does what best friends do, he invites him to share a boat trip and cheer Cliff up. Well, things go great, then they don’t, then the trip is over. From start to finish, it was excellent! It played out like a movie in my mind. This entire series, “but we’re bros,” is just amazing and this story is just fantastic!
Good story, but it seems they are all basically the same story, but with different characters and different setting. I do really like the stories, but am noticing a pattern.
So far I read 3 of Grayson’s novellas and this one was the best. The most developed story with an HFN. Absolutely recommend if you’re looking for a MM smutty novella.
