Two Kingdoms... One war... Six Soldiers...

With the Eternal War raging, the Vermillion family holds power in the city of Shadieh, and they don't intend on giving it up. Everything changes when the Reaper comes to town, and Octavia Vermillion burns. Kalieth Vermillion, hungry for vengeance, sets out to avenge his sister. ! SPOILERS !

I have seen this book being recommend on Tik Tok and I was very excited for it. So I gave it a shot.

I won't lie, I really like this book. The characters are amazing, the reaper is a great character! But I did feel a bit weird at certain points in the book and I really need to know if anyone else felt the same way.

1) The reaper's identity.
I think that it's amazing to have strong female characters, I'm all here for it. But I feel like them being a woman came a bit out of the blue. There were subble hints, but some or most of it could have been easily brushed aside.
I think that it would have been quite cute and interesting if the "main character" ( Kalieth) would have developed a relationship with a man. Him and the reaper started to have a great chemistry together after all in the beginning!
It just feels a bit wrong in a way that the reaper was a woman all along, it was going a bit downhill from there. And what happens after Kalieth finds out at his own apartment... It was a little bit disgusting and disturbing to me. But mostly extremely weird.

2) The ending.
It was a fantastic ending. Don't get me wrong! I absolutely cried my eyes out for days over the death of one of the characters.
It just didn't feel quite right. Like the reaper suddenly got so powerful. Maybe to powerful. And Kalieth his father? Don't get me started on him-

But those are just small things that I didn't like. Over all, it's a fun read with a immersive story and characters! ^^

The Reaper kicks off with a brutal shock Octavia Vermillion’s death and the ripple it sends through the powerful Vermillion family. From there, the story follows Kalieth, whose quest for vengeance slowly turns into a journey of unraveling his family’s history and the lies at the heart of two warring kingdoms.
The Reaper himself is a haunting presence, more myth than man, and the way the book leans into that mystery gives the story a constant sense of dread. Every time he appears, you really feel that “death and shadows follow” energy.
What makes the book compelling is how Kalieth’s black and white view of justice and revenge starts to blur as he learns the truth about Shadieh, the war, and even his own bloodline. It’s a fast read with sharp worldbuilding, moody illustrations, and a good balance of action and emotional tension.
If you like fantasy driven by family secrets, political power, and a villain who feels like a living omen, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Captivating writing, amazing detail, 6 different incredible personalities made this one of my favorite books I’ve read. The character development of each character was amazingly written, Bryce & Kalieth specifically! I became attached to every character and the ending was heartbreaking (shed a tear or two) but so beautiful, as well as being an amazing cliffhanger for book two! This will be a book I will be recommending to anyone interested in a new read 🤩

The banter was bantering! The book had me laughing one moment and then entranced in a battle the next. This was also my first time reading a fantasy book that focused on a group of people rather than just one main character and I really enjoyed that I was given options on who I connected with the most; it made my experience reading the book feel more personal. I can’t wait for book 2!!

This was the best fantasy novel I have read in such a long time. All of the characters are so developed. Bryce is my favorite. Great detail - I was able to picture every scene in my head. I couldn’t put it down! Cried for the ending and I am so excited for the second book to come out!

A bit slow for me towards the middle but the world building in this is so balanced and original. I fell in love with the characters and the badass women. The love stories are raw and passionate (and soul crushing iykyk) The reaper is such a cool character and I cant wait to see more of them all. Also what a cliffhanger!
