Content/Scope: A dictionary targeted to preschoolers through beginning school-age students. 900 words arranged alphabetically and illustrated. A-Z list is complimented by nine thematic illustrations at the back of the book with related vocabulary grouped in settings such as "classroom," "supermarket," and "apartment." This is a good addition to an elementary school library where children are just learning to read and piece together information.
Accuracy/Authority/Bias: American Heritage is a internationally known and recognized company specializing in information and a variety of dictionaries.
Arrangement/Presentation: Arrangement is alphabetical, containing over 900 entries, with about 6 words per page. Each word has a full-color painting, and the world is printed in lower case. With about half of the entries the word is used in a simple sentence to show meaning. Clear typefaces, spacious page layouts, and sharply reproduced illustrations.
Relation to other works: There are many children's picture dictionaries available; this dictionary meets requirements for libraries that need a beginning dictionary for those early readers in an elementary setting.
Accessibility/Diversity: Tidy illustrations depict an ethnically and physically diverse group of children and adults.
