Like most preschoolers, my little one developed a range of obsessions that I had to race to keep up with. This included the solar system, geology, and of course, dinosaurs. Typical ABC's books can be a bit of a let down for a kid that binges Nova on a regular basis. He would have loved this book. All sorts of words that he was actually interested in learning and definitions that don't talk down to kids. All of it backed by wonderful art that is easily accessible for kids and, frankly, worth opening the book for all on its own.

Amazon says this book is for ages 0-3 and the large colorful pictures on every page will appeal to this group quite well. The explanations for each of the terms however, fit school-age kids a little bit better. While these students don't generally need ABC's instruction, the STEM terms might be new to them and the text makes great reading practice. Kids and their parents/teachers will all enjoy the learning experience and will ooh and ahh over the bright, truly inclusive illustrations. Perfect for the classroom, homeschool, or for distance learning enrichment.

My only complaint, if it can be called that, is the available formats of the book. For me, the e-book is not bad, but I feel young children will not enjoy it as much as a paperback. The paperback is great for grades K-2 with a nice heavy cover, but the pages are thin enough to not stand up to repeated use of the pre-K crowd. A board book option would be preferable but is not yet available.

I received a free ARC for this title from Callisto Media in exchange for an honest review.

I have heard of S.T.E.M. but this was a first for me about hearing about S.T.E.A.M. Upon further looking into it I have found that basically it just adds another group to the disciplines a child is thought to need to learn to master instead.

As for this particular book I thought it would be interesting to see how you would bring scientific concepts to children, especially when some concepts are hard enough for adults to understand. This book does a beautiful job in introducing to the reader mostly basics and job descriptions that can be found in parts of the science community as not every scientific element or job is mentioned. Furthermore this is presented in alphabet format so children are still learning their letters while they are learning some science.

Each entry is given two pages - one that is illustration and includes the letter as well as the word that starts with it. And on the following page is a small sentence or two explaining what something is, examples of it or some other such information. From the reader most of these quite easy to read and more or less likely to grasp, especially with parental or other adult assistance.

What I have concerns for with this book is the fact that so many of the scientific words used are big such as paleontologist, precipitation, quadriceps, oceanography and nocturnal. Although I know these are the terms used I am not quite sure if the age of the audience would know how to read or pronounce these words again without adult assistance so this could be a considering point for some who would like to add this book to their own libraries.

And finally the illustrations. The artwork is a bit on the nostalgic side for me since with the human and animal characters it is like looking back at some of the older books I have seen illustrated before - not quite realistic but a simplistic almost childlike touch, especially when taking in some of the elements are just outlines and not even colored n. The colors are mostly bright and even when darkness is being portrayed it is still given enough light for the reader - check out if you will the universe section. And I also love the fact that some of the illustrations look as if texture has been added.

All together if you don't mind questions and helping younger children with pronunciation than this book could be a good starter into the world of science concepts.

Stone Age illustrations

I bought the whole series hoping I’d find new material, or new methods to use but I was surprised about how hyped this series when the content is dated still, and the illustrations were dull. Can’t see nowadays children being motivated to read this series.

Got this for my friend for her baby shower! She loved it! The book has great representation and will hopefully influence young readers to believe that anyone can do science! 🥰

An (obviously) educational ABC book based around various science-related words with supremely cute illustrations. It also warmed my heart to see that the people portrayed in this book are diverse. I can definitely my 2-year-old daughter and I utilizing this book for quite some time, like the blurb states - moving from letters to words and then what the words mean. Each letter page features a word, a short description of the word, and a double-page illustration. The words chosen are varied, fun, and in some cases completely new to my daughter.

I would highly recommend this book to parents who are starting the ABC's and want a book that will grow with your child. You can get this book in digital format (it is also listed as a Kindle Unlimited title) and paperback format. Those two formats are geared towards children that can handle those formats. Some children may struggle with the paper format and as I don't let my daughter read on a Kindle or tablet the digital format doesn't appeal to me either - especially given the targeted age. I would love to see this book board format that tends to hold up for younger readers better. My wish for this to be in board book format is the only reason this book wasn't scored a 5.

Science teacher Anjali Joshi and artist Katie Turner have teamed up to create an ABC book using terms from science and nature. Unlike some other early STEAM books, Joshi uses very kid-friendly words and ideas that will appeal to younger children instead of simply throwing difficult words into a book and calling it "early learning." A is for astronaut and D is for dinosaur and while B is for beaker might introduce a new word, the idea of something that holds liquid is easily understood by 2-5 year olds. The artwork is realistically rendered with plenty of extra details included to extend conversation and language development while reinforcing initial letter sound learning. Good choice for home and school libraries serving the target audience.

Concept: ABC
Theme: Science is a diverse subject that people need to understand the core meaning for it.
My favorite parts of this book was how the author would describe each letters' scientific meaning; instead of just listing the object without any description for it. In my future classroom, I will use this book to introduce letters and also the world of science.
