Did you know that the first English settlement in the New World was a disaster?

Perhaps you have heard the story of Roanoke before. Or maybe even the creation of Jamestown. But have you heard about the Spanish colonies in North America? Or the French and Dutch settlements?

Colonial America was diverse, with European settlers from various nations coming to the New World and meeting the Native Americans who already inhabited the land. What were their interactions like? Was there any semblance of peace between all of the groups who called this land their home?

This book will examine that in more detail, as well as a closer look at how some of the major British colonies were formed. The current-day United States owes its heritage to all of the people who moved or already lived there, but Britain perhaps had the greatest influence. After all, even today, Americans celebrate their independence from Great Britain.

So, what are you waiting for? Dive into this exciting period of history, and learn more about how the United States became what it is today. In this book, you will

A very good basic understanding of the multitude of variables which led to European Countries exterminating the indigenous populations of what is now known as North as South America. It also covers how those European countries fought one another for control over the two continents. The book is sourced for further study. I really like these books by the publishing company called Captivating History. They are always a fairly short read, this one about three hours, but are filled with fascinating information that is rarely if ever discussed in history books. This book, as the others, is full of references which will lead to hours of study by anyone who wants to know more.

This book is about colonial America so of course it does not go into the utter destruction of scores of cultures and the death of millions of people who were native to the areas conquered by the Europeans. This publishing company does, however, have several books on the fate of those cultures and peoples.

This is a very good read and highly recommended.

Listening to the history of Colonial America is a favorite subject of mine when wanting to learn a little about American History while doing housework. I understand that footnotes are needed, but often the link was often Wikipedia and it's contemporaries. I know these are to be quick reads, and I understand that, but, a little more in-depth research on the writer's part would be appreciated. This is probably the 10th of such books I've read/listened to and plan to continue, just wish the research led me to further information.

I don’t usually delve into the world of non-fiction. The ‘Colonial America’ book from the Captivating History series is proof for me that this is a good policy. The book is a dry and pasty detailing of the Colonial Era including a listing of many dates from 1490 to past 1783. Also included is a ubiquitous inventory of multiple European kings and queens and their many wars. There was very little explanation for the colonists’ impetus to do some of the things they did, either for the good or bad of the cause. This would have added an element of interest to the book.

This book was not well-written nor well-edited. This seems to be more of an overview and many of the historical events feel like you should be filling-in details between the lines - like you should already be familiar the details. In many instances, an idea was introduced, but you were left to draw your own connections without enough details to do so, and the idea lacked any solid conclusions. The format lacked flow. I enjoy history, but this was anything but “captivating.”
