I always love returning to the Top Dog Dude Ranch world, and The Lawman’s Surprise was such an enjoyable, emotional story that I was easily caught up in within moments. It’s always fun to run into familiar faces and get the chance to catch up a bit on some of the previous couples in this series.
Charlotte and Declan were a couple… until they weren’t. When Declan was temporarily leaving his sheriff position to do his National Guard rotation, she simply wanted a break; he took that request to another level by breaking up completely. Heartbroken, Charlotte wasn’t going to beg a man to stay where he didn’t want to be, so she didn’t fight him but went on with her life at the ranch while hiding how much he’d hurt her. Soon though, it would appear that she has to hide something else for a while. She’s pregnant, Declan has just returned home without contacting her, and her brother, Rory, is in a heap of trouble… now didn’t seem the right time to tell Declan about the baby, but she would soon. Unfortunately, not soon enough.
Frankly, I was an emotional wreck during The Lawman’s Surprise. Both Declan and Charlotte have some huge issues that need to be dealt with, things from their pasts that are affecting their present and their possible future. But they’re skirting around the important conversations and perhaps focusing on some of the non-threatening to their emotions everyday sort of things. And that lack of communication will blow up in their faces and their hearts.
The teen years can be such a challenge for both the teen and those that love them. My heart went out to Rory. Oh, I understood why he was acting out and how lost Charlotte felt in not being able to help him. This is as much Rory’s story as it is Declan’s and Charlotte’s, for his future is very much up in the air as well.
If you love a well-written romance with believable characters facing real-life challenges, if watching a couple take the risk that falling in love requires, and seeing a surly young man begin to turn his life around, then you’ll want to pick up The Lawman’s Surprise. I had such a good time back in this world, and hope there are more stories to come.

This a sweet and angst-ridden second chance at love romance. Declan and Charlotte were lovers until a few months ago. So much has been left unsaid between them, but now that he is back in town, Charlotte knows that she will need to tell Declan her secret. These two have an aversion to asking for help, most likely due to their painful pasts. Both had childhoods with parents who could not provide stability. Charlotte is now guardian to her rather rebellious teenage brother and being responsible for him has been overwhelming. When she asked Declan for a bit of space and time a few months ago so that she could try to get a handle on the situation, he broke things off completely and left town to fulfil his duty with the reserves. He regrets the breakup and wants to reconnect with Charlotte, but she doesn’t seem approachable now. Nothing has changed with her brother’s attitude, but Charlotte now has another responsibility on her plate. Her brother’s recent trouble brings Declan back to her door, but now she believes that they don’t have a future together as a couple. She no longer trusts him with her heart. When he discovers her secret, Declan wants to move full steam ahead and move in with Charlotte and her brother. Her hesitation is hurtful, but he knows he has some repair work to do. Can he convince Charlotte to trust him with her heart when he has never been in love or in a committed relationship before?
The characters are all very true-to-life and fascinating, as is their story. I loved their community and the support everyone offers each other. They rally around each other when needed, and assistance and advice is freely given. I look forward to reading more about the people on Top Dog Dude Ranch.

Charlotte and Declan are not together but Charlotte finds herself pregnant. And with a teen brother Rory to look after. It's complicated but she's strong, or at least that's what she's telling herself. Declan wants to be in the baby's life, but he and Charlotte seem to be on-and-off again and now with a baby on the way they really need to figure out what they are to each other and what kind of future they want together.
Of the four books from this series that I've read, I really liked this one the most. Perhaps it's because we read quite a bit about Charlotte and Declan in the previous book The Cowgirl and the Country M.D. (which was also so good!) so I felt like I was already invested in their story, and there was the added anticipation.
Actually in the previous book we didn't know that Charlotte was pregnant, and by just reading the blurb to this story I was already ready to have a cry fest! I was almost reluctant to read it because I know it would pull at my heartstrings.
Of course you don't need to have read the previous book to enjoy this story, but I felt it added depth to the story. I think the books are alright to be read as standalones but I really like the whole Top Dog Dude Ranch world so it was nice to read the books in the series. The stories are all very well written and also not too lengthy so it was easy to get through in a day.
I also like how the characters with each their backstories, past trauma, insecurities etc, fit so perfectly together in their imperfect way, and how the plot pulled them together. I think this is especially so in Charlotte and Declan's story, together with her brother Rory.
I have enjoyed all the books that I read from this series and will definitely be picking up more when I have the chance!.

While this is a part of a series, you don't have to read the prior ones to fully understand and enjoy this one. I haven't read the prior books in this series but I'm totally intrigued with the series after this book.
This is written in a multiple POV format. Not only are the two main protagonists POV given but also Charlotte's brother, Rory, as well.
Sheriff Declan is NOT a family man. His childhood was a rough one and so the white picket fence is just not his thing. Charlotte has a LOT on her plate. She is dealing with working as the landscape designer at Top Dog Dude Ranch, her brother has moved in with her and her mother is in a mental facility. Months ago when she asked for a breathing period in her relationship with Declan, he just broke it off. As he is also in the National Guard Reserves and is called up, he doesn't let Charlotte know that he left, nor when he returned! Charlotte has a secret that she needs to let him know. Their prior relationship left something behind that will make an appearance in 9 months! It will definitely be linking them together forever
Can these two work out their past history and relationship? Can Declan help Rory with his troubled past? Or will Rory be more problems for these two?
This is a clean romance with any hints to anything else, is behind closed doors.
Catherine Mann takes her readers back to Top Dude Ranch with her latest enchanting contemporary romance, The Lawman's Surprise.
Charlotte Pace wants to avoid Sheriff Declan Winslow at all costs - even though she is expecting his baby! Their brief fling ended three months ago and Charlotte had planned to steer clear of the handsome sheriff - until her troubled teenage brother brought him back into their lives! With nowhere to hide, Charlotte must tell Declan the truth about her pregnancy - even though she knows only too well that relationships are off the table for him.
Declan has always steered clear of affairs of the heart. He has never seen himself as the marrying kind or the sort of man to have a family, but with Charlotte expecting his baby and her troubled brother needing him, Declan soon begins to wonder whether being part of a loving family might be just what he's wanted all along.
Catherine Mann has penned an uplifting, entertaining and emotional romantic read I couldn't resist devouring in one sitting. A gorgeous romance about love lost and found, finding somewhere to belong and second chances, find a cozy chair, switch off your phone and get ready to lose yourself in Catherine Mann's superb novel, The Lawman's Surprise.

The Lawman's Surprise is a standalone contemporary romance by Catherine Mann, and is the sixth book of the Top Dog Dude Ranch series.
The set up for the Top Dog Dude Ranch is a super sweet and charming background. Set on an idyllic ranch and the titular Top Dog Ranch, the series has a heart warming atmosphere that is so easy to connect to. Where couples are brought together as they work or live near the Top Dog Dude Ranch, a place for holidays and healing - for guests and employees alike.
The couple of this book, Sherriff Declan Winslow and Charlotte, have been hinted at in previous books of this series. They were having some sort of situationship, however, things changed when Declan was called up from the reserves to serve a brief stint in the National Guard. But everything had fallen apart when Declan returned. Charlotte has more on her mind than a broken romance, she is also guardian to her troubled teenage brother. Things between this couple does not seem easy, but they have a spark of romance that is definitely worth them fighting for. While their lives seem complicated, they match together well.

Declan and Charlotte did not have easy childhoods. Charlotte is raising her very younger brother after their mother was placed in a care facility due to mental illness. Rory is having a hard time adjusting. Declan and Charlotte had been together for a short time until she called for a time-out. He could see the writing on the wall and walked away.
Charlotte finds out she is pregnant. Then she finds out the hard way that Declan is back from his tour of the National Guards the hard way. Rory was brought home by Declan as he is in trouble with the law.
Top Dog Dude Ranch sounds so awesome and the description of all the businesses and events are excellent. It makes you want to go there.
So many emotions as Declan, Charlotte, and Rory navigate their hurts, and thoughts on their past that affects their present. Charlotte has a hard time coping with raising her teenage brother who is out of control, working a full-time job, pregnant, and blows hot and cold with Declan. Declan wants to have a family with Charlotte. He has to figure out why he ran so fast the first time when Charlotte wanted a timeout.
This is book six in The Top Dog Dude Ranch series and it is Charlotte and Declan’s story. Charlotte and Declan had a quick fling and now she is pregnant and trying hard not to let Declan know yet as she has so much on her plate with trying to look after her brother Rory who always seems to be getting into trouble making things even harder for Charlotte. Declan has a past that still haunts him so when he breaks up with Charlotte he leaves to do some National Guard Duty only when he returns he finds out that Charlotte is having his baby so he steps up to the plate to help and support her where he can especially as he never thought of himself as a family man. Declan and Charlotte both have a lot of baggage and trust issues but will they be able to resolve there issues and deal with the situation in front of them so that they can become a family and get the happy ending that they both deserve. I really enjoyed this book and the characters and storyline kept you engaged and I can’t wait to read more books by this author in the future.
The Lawman’s Surprise by Catherine Mann is the latest entry into Top Dog Dude Ranch. Sheriff Declan Winslow has returned to Moonlight Ridge, but he didn’t bother to tell Charlotte Pace, his former girlfriend and Top Dog Ranch landscaper. Charlotte Pace is keeping a huge secret from him but she has to put her family, her brother, Rory, and herself, first. When Declan left for his National Guard Duty, they had decided to take a break. Then she finds herself expecting his baby. While Charlotte loves Declan, she doesn’t know how to deal with all the issues she finds herself up against. Declan loves Charlotte but never wanted the picket fence she comes with. Catherine does a wonderful job of portraying the angst between two people in love who don’t know how to deal with it. I love how she weaves in Rory’s troubles and awakening to bring two people who clearly belong together back together. It’s a WONDERFUL read and a fabulous story.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. Charlotte Pace and Sheriff Declan Winslow had just started dating when responsibilities and doubt broke them up. Charlotte just wanted a break but Declan broke it off. Declan ends up leaving for National Guard duty and Charlotte ends up taking care of her young brother, Rory. Charlotte's and Rory's mother has been hospitalized to deal with mental health issues. Charlotte is such a caring person she ends up adopting Primrose/Rosie a cute elderly dog because her mother's roommate had to give her up and no one else would adopt her.
Declan does come back and finds out Charlotte is pregnant so they so of agree they will co-parent. Declan wants Charlotte and Rory to move in with him but Charlotte does not trust Declan to stick around so she turns him down. They do end up sort of dating but Charlotte ends it. Will Declan and Charlotte overcome their fears and come together as a family?
Her troubled teenage brother just brought Sheriff Declan Winslow back into Charlotte Pace’s life. Their brief fling ended three months ago, but Charlotte can’t keep her pregnancy a secret much longer. Nor can she afford their attraction to surface again when she and Declan seek shelter during a tornado watch. Haunted by his past, Declan's never seen himself as a family man. But with Charlotte’s brother depending on him and a baby on the way, maybe this is his chance to find out!
This was such a sweet read! I really love Catherine Mann's books and this was no exception. Being a Harlequin title, it does follow their tried and true tropes and plots, and of course, there is a happy ending.
Good pacing and lovely characters made this quick read fun.
Thank you to BookSprout for a copy of this in return for my honest opinion.
Declan and Charlotte had it tough growing up. No wonder they are wary of letting the love they feel shine through. Coupled with caring for her troubled teenage brother, the responsibility of a new baby is daunting. But living in a small town has its advantages, as their friends show their support for the two.
Young Rory experiences his first crush and slowly converts back to the little brother Charlotte knows and loves. He grows up a little, and realizes that he does have people in his life who will never fail him and that he doesn't want to let them down either. I love that the author gives readers insight to his thoughts and feelings.
A wonderfully sweet tale with a great setting at the Top Dog Dude Ranch where love and family ties run deep.

First of all, Catherine made me feel like I wanted to live at/visit Top Dog Dude Ranch. Despite this being book 6 of the series, and the first I've read of it, I felt like she gave enough information and backstory to each character that I knew who they were. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. I feel like the ending of the book was a little rushed but it was overall a good story. I wanted to ring Rory's neck, but also give him a shoulder to cry on. Rosie stole the show every time she came up in the story. I sympathized with both Charlotte and Declan and their commitment issues, but this is what made the proposal at the end seem so rushed. I would happily read the rest of this series!
Declan and Charlotte, along with her much younger brother Rory, have dealt with parental issues all their lives. Both are very wary of relationships and counting on others. They were once together, then apart and now they have to find a way to deal with another life. The characters are well developed, working with real issues and real emotions. Things change so quickly that you can not put the book down. Loved the ranch, the family type atmosphere of workers and friends, as well as the relationships that are growing. Some danger, hidden agendas, secrets, mistrust, revelations, steam, and much more. Vivid locales and a great May Day create the ending.

Charlotte and Declan these two really need to be together, but they must get out of their own way first. Both come from sketchy upbringings and are carrying a ton of baggage from that time. Charlotte is pregnant, and taking care of her younger brother since her mom is in a mental health facility. With that comes an angry teen and all the baggage that can bring. Declan is a sheriff and in the national guard and had his own issues with his mother. It all tends to make the water they are trying to swim through very difficult and at times they wonder if on both sides if the time and effort is worth it. Are they just too damaged? You’ll have to read it to find out, but it does end with a HEA and brought some tears to my eyes for two people who just need a break for things to go right.
Loved this sweet story with Charlotte who has custody of her sixteen year old troubled brother while their mother who is mentally weak is in a facility for treatment. Declan is her ex and also from a broken family that spent time in foster care at times. Now the challenge is Charlotte is pregnant and Declan broke up with her before he knew and told her he was not the white picket fence kind and never wanted a family. With all the broken pass that Charlotte and Declan have will they fight for a future now that they are expecting a baby.

Charlotte is raising her brother after her mother was placed in the hospital. Rory has hurt feeling as he was the one who found his mom and she is not seeing him. Declan was dating Charlotte until she as for a break and he just broke up with her instead because he was going to be assigned a place in the National Guard. He is back and Rory is in trouble for breaking in a shop that is on the ranch they live at and she works. Th order gives Rory the chance to clean the stall to work off his crime in it. Can Charlotte work thing out as there is a baby to come and can she help her brother through the argue that he has?.

Having had glimpses of Charlotte and Declan in the previous book it was great to finally get their story and I enjoyed how glimpses of their relationship prior to the here and now were added at times to feel their story. Both have reasons to hesitate about being any more but co-parents but the attraction is undeniable so there is lots of push/pull between them, the fact we also get a glimpses into Rory as well really made this a great read and feel the emotions they all go through. A great read about moving on from the past and embracing the future by working together.

Our hero and heroine both come from broken homes and turbulent pasts. Our hero is now the town sheriff and a National Guardsman and our heroine is a horticulturalist at the Top Dog Dude ranch and is taking care of her teenaged brother. The brother has been getting into trouble and our hero is trying to help before the boy goes too far. As if things weren't complicated enough, she finds out that she is expecting. There are many landmines that the hero, heroine and the brother will have to overcome if they want to have any chance at a loving future family. Read this sweet story and see what happens.

Declan and Charlotte broke up because she was worried how about their relationship was affecting her focus on her troubled teen brother and Declan was scared of forever with her, but they didn’t count on a baby that would tie them together. There relationship is still shaky, her brother getting into trouble doesn’t help, Declan still isn’t sure if he commit to anything more than coparenting, and Charlotte pulls away when there are signs of trouble. I loved her senior rescue dog and why Charlotte saved her.
Loved this book. It was so good it was hard to put down. This would be a great rainy day curled up with a blanket book. It is the story of two fiercely independent people, struggling to overcome their childhood heartaches and find a way to build a strong future for them, their future child, a troubled teen and Primrose, a loveable senior dog who works her way into the family and their hearts. (Personally I think she is their own little helping guardian angel.) A wonderful well written book that makes you totally engrossed in the story and cheering for a real HEA.
Tropes Surprise pregnancy Grump and sunshine Emotional
Spice 🌶 Was okay
The book was cute and surprise pregnancy and things revolving around them in books is my favorite things to read. The grump and sunshine aspects were fabulous to read and it was funny, cute and emotional read. It's worth of every second you give this book.

This is a well written second chance romance with strong characters in Declan, Charlotte and her younger brother Rory. The author does a great job developing their story and brings real life issues they will need to deal with. There are secrets, steam and a ton of emotions. The story moves fluidly with perfectly painted scenes and is an enjoyable read.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
The sixth book in the Top Dog Dude Ranch series. Sheriff Declan Winslow and Charlotte Pace broke up three months ago, but she is trying to keep her pregnancy a secret from him. Her brother Rory and two of his friends get into trouble and bring him back into her life. There is drama, twists, turns, two people that have to let go of the past to get their happy ending. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a great second chance romance story with plenty of suspense to keep the pages turning. The book touches on family, friendships, secrets, reconciliation and of course love. It's cute and well written with a realistic storyline and characters. I loved the ranch setting. It’s an easy read that will satisfy any reader. I really enjoyed it.

This is the fifth book I've read written by Catherine Mann; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
This is the sixth book in the Top Dog Dude Ranch Series; it is a stand-alone book. The story is about Charlotte & Declan; they broke up a few months ago but now he’s back in her life because of her brother so she can’t keep the pregnancy a secret any more.

Good book in the series, picks up a story line from the previous book in that Charlotte Pace's brother Rory is acting out and getting in trouble. Declan Winslow, the sheriff, and Charlotte had a brief romance, but he left for National Gaurd duty, and they broke up. Now he's back, and Charlotte is still dealing with Rory's antics, as well as wondering how to tell Declan their romance has consequences.
This book hooked me from the start. I really liked the female protagonist and had no problem rooting for her throughout the book. The only things I didn't care for were the rushed feel of the ending and the lack of closure. Perhaps we'll get to see a little more of the story in another book in the series.

This was an exciting and charming second chance secret pregnancy romance. The characters were great and romantic, the secondary characters and primary characters were well collaborating giving the story an interesting flow. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a second chance romance.

I am not ever a fan of surprise babies, however this one was such a joy to read - as when someone is deployed, I agree that that kind of news needs to be in person. Add in a teenage brother for additional angst and banter and this story is very true to life IMHO! Another great HEA as well.
