Ocean is a 30something explorer of this beautiful planet and the internal landscapes of human beings. Ocean is trans; nonbinary; an artist; an enthusiast of animals, plants and sunrises; and a friend you have not yet met. Pronouns: they/she/he/none.
One of the better books I’ve read in the smallish-intro-to-something-queer-for-your-mom-who-doesn’t-get-it-but-wants-to genre.
The voice is warm and generous, not condescending, assumes the best in the reader. Some of the values and the genuineness of this tone make me wonder if the author is a Quaker or something close to it.
One of the things I really loved is that this book manages to touch on some issues and arguments trans people hear all the time, and respond to them in a simple, research-based way that values kindness and assumes the person asking does too.
I loved the section about gender/sex diversity in the animal world. Loved the lefthandedness analogy. Loved the myth-busting throughout, loved the invitation to all people to explore what feels right to them in terms of gender.
This book digs in deep, is simple and readable while managing not to sacrifice the important stuff. I wish some more queer and trans folks would read it - I think we could afford to be more compassionate and open-minded with each other too.
well intentioned but lowkey shit book would not recommend. Was keen on some science based learning instead it felt like you were being babied by a blue hair the whole time whos only crediential were that they were trans.
A clear and informative primer with a ton of heart
I loved this book! It’s a quick read and a perfect guide to help you understand the concept of nonbinary and how to be supportive. It’s very well-written, and goes into enough detail to get an introductory understanding without being too dense or philosophical. I finished reading this and felt way more prepared to be a better ally, with a deeper knowledge of terminology, best practices, and more empathy for my fellow human beings. Highly recommended!
This whet my appetite to learn more. I wish the book went Into more details but the details it has cover a wide variety of topics and questions one might have surrounding gender identities. It does what it sets out to do, Introduce you to the umbrella term : nonbinary
I just read this book. I have a non-binary son. (They have given me their permission to use the word son). I really learned a lot from this book. Ocean Atlas does an excellent job of explaining what non-binary means and how I can be a better ally. I have a long way to go, but I know feel much better equipped to be an ally and to have better conversations with my son.
As one ally to others, I highly recommend this book. It’s a quick, easy to understand book that does an excellent job of explaining the essentials for understanding genders and sexual identity and preferences. Spread the kindness, love, and joy!
