The Loyalties We Break

Loyalty.

A few months ago, I would have said it’s one of my only redeeming traits. But now…

My best friend is in love with his girl, his ex girl. He’s determined to win her back at any cost and at first, I was happy for him. I just didn’t know that I’d want her for myself, but I do.

Keeping my distance gets harder each time. She’s the one thing I can’t have, yet I can’t stop reaching for her.

Betrayal.

They say the worst kind doesn’t come from your enemies but from those closest to you.

◦•●◉✿ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐖𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 ✿◉●•◦

𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 (H) is Erica’s perfect All-American, ex-boyfriend who comes from a good family, and is the football superstar at Brighton University. He broke up with her two years ago because he wanted to take advantage of the college experience, but now that she’s attending the school now he wants to get her back. 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞 (h) still has lingering feelings for Trev after he makes his intentions clear, but on her first night on campus she sleeps with his best friend 𝐒𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 (H) and that’s the game changer for her.

◦•●◉✿𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 ✿◉●•◦

I have a love-hate relationship with love triangles and this time I HATED it because the guy I was rooting for did not get the girl. Sebastian was terrible after the one-night stand with Erica and Trevor was trying real hard to win her back. He was so sweet (in the first half) and he truly would have done anything to make her happy. Trev and Erica still had chemistry, so I’m supposed to believe that one night with Sebastian ruined that for them. Trevor had every right to be mad at them. Trevor would literally talk about Erica ALL DAY, EVERYDAY and Seb just listened to him speak when he KNEW Erica had already moved on… that’s cruel. I’m upset that they had to go and ruin Trev so that Seb and Erica could be endgame AND they ruined his career… absolutely terrible.

Not only that but Seb was HORRIBLE and treated her like absolute shit whenever she was around. He wanted to push her away because he was attracted to her, but he was actually the worst MMC. I’m probably seeing all his flaws because I wanted Trev to end up with Erica even though I knew it wasn’t going to happen considering he had like 5 POV chapters. The man faked amnesia to get a second chance… although he lied… I admire his dedication 😭. I would have been like wow you like me that much to fake memory loss… I’ll marry you RN. Her loss!!!

AND WHY DID SEB AND ERICA GET ENGAGED. She ditched her first career opportunity in art because she FOLLOWED HIM… okay clown. I’m done with them.

◦•●◉✿𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 ✿◉●•◦

NGL I’m very mad that they ruined a decade long friendship between Trevor and Erica so that they could make Sebastian look better. It was SO unnecessary and I hope that one day they can repair their friendship. It’s never going to be the same or what it once was, but at least they’ll still be in each other’s lives. Tell me why they made him so unlikeable and seem like the worst person when all he ever wanted was the best for Erica. I’m still convinced he was in love with her but Erica was so infatuated with Seb that she didn’t realize what she had in front of her. I’m biased because this could have been an amazing second chance, best friends to exes lovers romance but it did not deliver. ITS A CRIME, Trev was an actual angel before he let his jealousy get in the way and his character got ruined…. he needs his own book so he can be happy. IM MAD AGAIN because he was a reformed playboy FOR HER and she left him … ITS FINE. You cant tell me she still didn’t have feelings for him still… with their history. THEY WERE IT FOR ME. I didn’t like Seb so I’m the biggest hater of this book, in my mind they didn’t end up together.

𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥, I’m just mad that my endgame lost don’t mind me; they deserved to be happy 🚶🏽‍♀️. No but seriously Erica and Seb together were absolutely terrible and he didn’t even know she was gone for TWO MONTHS until Trevor told her. If he truly LOVED her then he would have noticed be serious.

erica an emotional cheater and a loser. trevor a liar and a manipulator. those two deserve each other fr 🤥 #justiceforsebastian

this was so BAD. sebastian deserved so much better. literally WHY was he the one groveling at the end when erica was the one that failed at setting boundaries with her ex.

the overall writing was shit too. i don’t know what year this was published but it felt like i was reading a 2015 episode story. i truly believe we need to ban exclamation points in romance books 🙏🏼

First thing first… I really really dislike love triangles!! But let me tell you about this one! I was hooked right from the start! We are introduced to Erica, a college freshman. When she arrives to college she is set to meet with her bestfriend who happens to also be her ex boyfriend, Trevor.
Erica agrees to meet Trevor at a house party and when she arrives , she instantly locks eyes with the most handsome guy. Tall, muscular, and has long hair 🥵. Let’s just say Erika and Sebastian have that instant attraction that leads them into having a very spicy moment. A moment so hot that names are not even exchanged 🫠 🥵
Now, imagine the surprise and the unfortunate situation these guys are in, when Trevor introduces Erika, who he still has feelings for, to his bestfriend Sebastian. YUP!!!
Gosh, this was just so freaking good! I won’t say more, but please do yourself a favor and read this!!

2.5 stars. I had high hopes going in to this forbidden best friends/sports romance and was bummed. The characters were downright awful - there was so much drama, cheating, inappropriate touching, etc. It read like a high school drama with immature behavior. The part that floored me was not only the car accident/amnesia but that Trevor was faking it. The heroine was made to sound too perfect - beautiful, valedictorian, mind blowing self-taught artist, etc. Nothing felt authentic or believable and I really was disappointed because it had such potential.

“Happiness, true happiness is so rare. If we don’t live for that, then what are we living for? What good is a comfortable life if it’s an unhappy one?”

This follows Erica, Trevor and Sebastian. She is the one I want but can’t have due to my best friend who is in love with her. But I can’t resist from the moment I saw her she was it.

I enjoyed this read! Erica was a great character and felt she knew how to stand her ground especially when her parents always had two cents to say. Sebastian is fantastic this man made me giddy but Trevor, something seemed off about him from the start. Just the way he carried himself and his attitude around situations just made me favour Sebastian. The sneaking around was fun as hell and the spice hit all the right places. The plot was great and kept me entertained but the two plot twists I did not see coming.

The only thing is I didn’t devour this in a few sittings it did take me close to a week and didn’t consume my every thought. Trevor is someone I had my eye on from the start and there was a clear choice in who I wanted Erica with. But still, this is a great read and excited for the next book in the series.

What more could I ask for? Erica and Trevor grew up best friends, they dated, but when he left for college he left her behind so that he could sample the buffet lined up for him as the QB for his new university. She’s ready to start college and enjoy her newfound freedom away from her parents, while still appeasing their requests for her college major. He wants to lock the best thing that he ever let go back down, but will she let him?

Y’all, this book was good, so good. I grinned, I laughed, I cringed, and I felt the sadness. There were times I closed the book, thinking, “my god, what are you doing!?” But isn’t that what makes a good author? That we feel the actions so deeply?

Even if love triangles aren’t your jam, but you love sports and college romance, pick this one up!

oh my gosh the dramaaaaaaaaaa.

I live for love triangles, no matter how petty and asinine they can sometimes be.

FMC is childhood bestfriends with MMC1. They date in HS but he breaks up with her when he goes to college so he could ~get the full experience~. She, rightfully, locks him in the friendzone. When she starts attending the same college, MMC1 is set on winning her back. The thing is, her first night on campus? She unknowingly sleeps with MMC1's male best friend (MMC2).

You then get to read some secret dating, pining, and manipulations. So freaking entertaining.

I don't want to spoil anything here, but I'm still conflicted over who FMC ends up with lol. I wasn't convinced over their emotional/romantic relationship outside of physical things. Sure, what one of the MMCs do is despicable and big red flag energy, but tell me why I admire his dedication lol.

This was my first book from this author and I really enjoyed it! I can't wait to read more.

I wanted to love this book, but I'm just not the audience for it. It reads like it was written in the 2000s and has the feel of a Lifetime movie in book form. The central plot pulls you in, but it takes forever to realize, and when it all comes to a head, it feels rather lackluster. This novel would be better advertised as a coming-of-age book, as the romance definitely takes a back seat to all the "growing-up" the three characters go through. It could use more smut and plot and less fluff.

I looked forward to the love triangle, but the story would've been better without it. It takes a very center-of-the-line approach to the element. There isn't enough tension or back-and-forth between the couples to keep you on your toes. It's obvious who the "winner" will be, and the other guy is just there because why not. If you hate them, there's just enough emphasis on the second love interest to where it'll bother you. I skipped the second guy's POV, and it didn't affect my reading at all.

College romance, love triangle, ex-boyfriend best friend, football romance

Trevor is your perfect All-American boy, he comes from a good family, has a huge heart and is the football superstar that every teenage guy wishes he could be. Erica is your feisty red head whose parents have already chosen her future of becoming a lawyer. Sebastian is your grumpy, fiercely possessive, comes from the wrong side of the tracks alpha male. After a night of drinking and partying, their lives changes and secrets are revealed. This story is intriguing with characters that you are fully invested on their outcomes.

DNF. I think the idea of the book was good but the execution was not. The writing was wonky to me. It felt really choppy, and both guys in the story were kind of awful. And honestly the girl was awful. Idk not the book for me.

HE DESERVED BETTER.

Classic falling in love with your ex/best friend’s (Trevor’s) best friend (Sebastian.) It started off decent, she was attracted to both of them but eventually knew that Sebastian was the one for her and then it went downhill from there. She knew she wanted Sebastian but always seemed to make leeway for Trevor because she didn’t want to hurt him. Trevor blows a fit when he finds out and lands himself in a hospital pretending to have amnesia and Erica does her best friend duties again, further jeopardizing her relationship with Sebastian.

I get it. She was trying to be there for her best friend but after several occurrences, she’s failed to draw a line, always hesitating that Trevor mistakes it for love and kisses her. Sebastian walks in on this without noting her refusal of the kiss and breaks up with her. Of course the kiss is not fully her fault but I firmly believe she didn’t deserve him. They end up reconciling later on after HE fights for HER when really SHE should’ve fought for him! She was at fault for his insecurity and still proceeded to do things after so many signs. Why do writers think the guys should be the ones to pursue? That’s an outdated mindset, cause Erica should’ve done the groveling.

Sebastian was worth way more than this book was willing to give.

I am so happy finally stated this series!
And I will say this one took me by surprise.
It was a whirlwind of all the things, and I couldn’t get enough.

I have to say I went in pretty blind to this one, it is a love triangle-which is not usually my favourite, but I very much enjoyed the way the author wrote the story and the characters.

This book follows Erica, Trevor and Sebastian-and it was a bit of a roller coaster of emotions along the way. I really enjoyed Erica, she had a lot thrown at her, but I felt like she was always honest and rightfully got confused at some points. Needing time to process her feelings. Trevor is her first love, but isn’t sure she can go back to being more than just best friends. Her connection with Sebastian, though new, was very strong and special. I very much enjoyed how both the guys were possessive and protective and cared about her a lot. This book had some good steam too.

I enjoyed the writing a lot and loved that were were able to get POVs from all three. There are a few twists in this one (and one that completely shocked me!) The emotions I felt for these characters were high and when secrets and feelings are forced to light I couldn’t get enough, I flew through the last third of the book.

I am very happy with the ending, how Erica followed for dreams and passions. The couple I wanted together from the start ended up together and I couldn’t help the smile on my face at the end.

This all makes me very curious to see what the rest of this series brings! I am here for all the emotional ups and downs again!

The Loyalties We Break will definitely have you swooning, wanting to throw your book/Kindle across the room and then rushing to pick it up and hug it. Taylor shows us what happens when certain lines are crossed and how the rules of the game change.

This is the first book I've read by Taylor and I enjoyed it. This sports romance will have you wiping sweat from your brow! Erica and Trevor are best friends turned exes. Trevor goes off to college and ends the relationship. A few years later Erica goes to the same college and Trevor is determined to get Erica back, but then enters Trevor's best friend Sebastian and the ball is now not only in Trevor's court but Seb's as well. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book since I'm not an avid reader of sports romances. I enjoyed the banter between the characters and the plot twists, I did not see them coming! At some point, I got mad at Sebastian and couldn't believe what he was doing, but luckily it all turned out well in the end. I felt the book had a satisfying ending and I wouldn't mind seeing more of these characters in future books.

Probably more but either way whatever, it's amazing.

Let's Get Into It

This is my second novel by Katelyn Taylor- and I dare say my very favorite one that I have read.I was a bit critical on the first one I read, but this one- this right here is a+. I don't really do a lot of sports romances, but this one right here had me hooked since chapter two.

I absolutely adore how she built every single one of these characters (including the FMC which we know is usually hard for me to relate to). These characters are very well built and I couldn't decide if I loved or hated several of them, in such a delicious way. I really enjoyed the side characters as well- and I pray that we get to see more of them further into the series.

I could not put this book down. The story in itself was a constant page-turner and something I could not read enough of- in fact I can't wait for her to continue this series because I was not ready for it to end.

This is an ex's best friend but the ex is still there. There are so many unknowns about everything that you constantly don't know how you feel. I was constantly indecisive about who I wanted in the end to be end game the whole time and the angst was beautiful. I was actually getting very upset at one point because I thought this was going to end one way and then boom! Katelyn threw everything I knew out the window and made me stay up way too late to finish this book.

The spice- let's talk about that- I LOVED it. It was angsty, descriptive, and just put in all the right places. It made sense to the story and wasn't just spice for the sake of spice. Don't get me wrong this is not a "lack of spice" by anymeans... oh no no. This has spice in all the right places and just enough to make you *literally* say things outloud- my husband got tired of hearing me go "OH!!!! WOW!" and other narratives haha. It's all in good fun, but truly the spice was fantastic.

I will absolutely own this book in paperback and can not wait to read more!

I already knew going into this that I wasn’t going to be the biggest fan, but I read it anyway because I knew it had the love triangle trope and tons of drama. Lately, I’ve been reading really boring books right now, I have three unfinished books on my Kindle because they were boring me to death. I knew this one was going to be entertaining, and damn, was it entertaining. It was written really well, I ate up all the drama, and it kept my attention span.

However, I didn’t like any of the characters individually or together. They all annoyed me in their own ways. Neither the MMC is going to be my next book boyfriend, nor the FMC my book girl crush. None of them were very likable, but I devoured all the drama, so do with that what you will. I’m still going to read the other books in the series because the second one has a single mom, and damn, I love the single mom trope it’s actually my freaking favourite trope.

The third book I’m not going to read because apparently, it has the “it’s always been you” trope, the “friends to lovers” trope, and the “unrequited love” trope literally my most hated tropes all in one book. 💀 I despise the trope where he says “it’s always been you” but he’s off married, having the best time and an amazing sex life, while his best friend, who is in love with him, is on the sidelines just pining. Yeah, no, damn thank you.

But apparently, Trevor’s book is last, and even though he annoyed me in this book and fucked up a bit, I’m actually looking forward to his story and want him to have a happy ending.

Do I recommend this? Yes if you’re in a reading slump this will take you out if it

I was really, really looking forward to this book because I loved the concept and the marketing was 🔥 but I honestly didn’t love the book. The writing threw me off and I’m not sure what it is but it missed the mark for me. I think maybe it was the passive voice or the excessive exposition used? It wasn’t bad writing, it just felt kind of flat.

The concept was really good and there was an angsty love-triangle that appealed to me, but the plot development wasn’t very strong. The characters really didn’t DO much. They hooked up, they fought, they hooked up again. Repeat.

This is why I need to avoid HS/College dramas. Give me some real world problems to spice up a relationship.
