Two brothers face the end of all they know as the Earth is absorbed into something called War World. On Earth they were up and coming duo competitors in ACS (Armored Combat Sports) and it is with those skills they just might survive. A LitRPG Grimdark novel.
THIS BOOK IS GRIMDARK -- MEANING -- PROFANITY, GORE, HEAVY EMOTION.
"My flesh knew what to do as I spun again, pushing off his huge body to set myself a few steps past his now exposed back, planting feet, arresting momentum, only to jack its kinetic energy into legs pushing off stone, axe lowered, behind me, coming forward in sync with my body, taut, muscles exploding as the axe came over my shoulder pistoning into the top of his head, planting a heraldic flag to the fuck yous of history."
The Bones of our Fathers Book One in the series Blood Brothers
'“Come on Dozer, let’s see what you and Daddy can do.” I pulsed what I wanted over the bond. The floodgates opened. He scraped his hoof in imitation of taurean improvosu, head lowered, billows of repressed loss from snorting snout, and he was off, a locomotive with only one destination and one purpose, carnage. I stepped a breath from his shadow, dialed in, 1-800-Die Fuckers Die.'

First off this is only 192 pages long, so if you remove the many stat pages this gets a lot shorter. The writing is very choppy and needs editing. An interesting story but the choppy writing style actually hurts the story. The boys got their mom killed by not allowing her to fight and level. I understand wanting to protect your loved ones but in this case not letting her fight wasn’t protecting her. Oh hey I stood in a shadow and got the sneak skill! Yet another story that hands out skills and abilities for absolutely no reason. Rar! I’m mad I got a rage skill. What a joke. There is little to no reason for the characters to have the skills and abilities that they do. Weapons and armor skills I can totally understand but the rest no way. Supposedly the mines have all kinds of extra loot inside them, they don’t really find much. Mostly some stuff from the very first room and loot from bodies. Not much else. The story was lacking and could have been so much better.
A short system-apocalypse style litrpg novel -- basically a novella-length story extended with lots of stats. (Just look at the page count compared to audiobook length!) It has some good ideas, but they're not implemented very well. Most of the lore seems like nonsense and it has far too many stat blocks.
Writing quality is moderately poor, with common self-published KU faults littered throughout the text: singular-plural mismatches, "I's" instead of mine, "I" instead of me, problems with tense (past perfect, past, present), incorrect words (referendum doesn't mean what the author thinks it means!), misused idioms, narrative shifts between first person and third person in the middle of sentences, far too many fragments, and so on, are all prevalent and obvious. The author trying to portray the fast and chaotic flow of battle with short fragments with no grammar doesn't work very well at all. Likewise, the overly flowery prose and repeated orchestral metaphor; it reads like terrible poetry. The writing ability just isn't good enough to carry it off.
Dialogue is a little stilted and characters are basically tropes: shallow and stereotypical, inconsistent at the whims of plot device, and very quick to turn homicidal. The system and plot quest are a little inconsistent and not explained well, so some of the characters' reactions don't make a lot of sense, especially near the start. There are also assorted inconsistencies and flaws in world logic. It really needs a proofreader and editor.
Audiobook narration is okay, although the narrator makes some minor mispronunciations (e.g. mischievous, chasm) and his character voices are wildly inconsistent -- his dwarf would be in the running for worst accent in an audiobook, alternating between terrible Scottish and worse Jamaican. There are also a couple of short sections with poorly normalised volume. I found the narrator's voice a bit slow, too, so sped it up immediately after the intro. The biggest problem with the audiobook, though, is the appalling and too-loud combat music during each battle. Not only does the type of music chosen immediately put some people off, but the volume of the music is far too loud compared to the narrator's voice. This all but ruined the presentation for me.
Overall it's bordering on OK, but there are far better litrpg novels available.
Warning: this book has excessive swearing. If this bothers you, you might want to read / listen to something else instead.
Overall this is a good first book. It's a bit of a quick read but the characters where interesting and i suspect will continue to be flushed out. My only negative is the ending don't like cliffhangers or anything resembling one.
Still 4 stars for me.. good humor and sadness all in all.
This is an interesting LitRPG as it is definitely darker than some of the others I have seen out there. The description of the fights takes some getting used to but some of the text could use a good edit, but overall, an enjoyable quick read. I look forward to the next installment.
The author desperately needs a lector! His writing style, the decision to use first person, droning on and on about trivial stuff and to keep jumping between subjects for no reason kept aggravating me until i put the book away.
