I was drawn into this sweet, emotional story from the beginning. Tragedy hits an Amish family in Johns Mill, Tennessee, when the parents are shot and killed by a young Englischer in their store. The event is made worse by media attention brought on them during their time of grief and strain, emotionally and financially. The elder son, Joseph, is left to do what he can to hold them together and deal with the family farm but one sister leaves town, one married brother leaves home, and the youngest sister is emotionally withdrawn, all because of the events.
Naomi Schrock is in town visiting her cousin, Katie and her husband, and helping them with their new baby. Since Katie is doing well, Naomi volunteers to help her old friends, Joseph and his sister Miriam, left at home. For the first time in her life, she feels like she is helping someone. She has spent her life being looked after because of a heart condition. After an operation, she is better and am able to help others.
It seems that one thing after another keeps happening to the wonderful characters in this story but in the Amish way, they turn their cares over to Gott and rely on His will. This is an inspiring, uplifting story, emotionally charged and engaging to the end. Kudos to Laurel Blount for this great story.

I was quickly swept into this wonderful heart felt book. I loved this story about the Hochstedler family of Johns Mill Tennessee. It was an emotional story that started out on a tragic note. It was unpredictable, original and romantic. It grew quickly into a page turner and had a good ending. I will add that I thought the book had a pretty cover that made me want to read the story.
The Hochstedler family suffered a terrible loss early on in the book. It was a time of grieving and coming to terms with what had happened to them. Each family member was effected differently and one was traumatized and required special help. As members of the Amish faith they were expected to forgive and put the future in God's hands. As time passed the pain lessened some but could they ever truly put the past behind them in order to move on with their lives?

I would recommend this book to readers of Amish Fiction and fans of Laurel Blount. This is the first book of the Johns Mill Amish Romance series.

Super sweet romance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This book has a lot of emotion tied to it. It is a story about picking up the pieces after everything has gone wrong. A violent senseless act that changes your family and the lives of those around you.
It’s also a story about community, giving to others, support, and finding that one person who was meant to be by your side regardless of challenges along the way. Shelter in the Storm is addicting. It is calming. The title is perfect. Even in the course of tragedy the written words have a peaceful affect on you.
The story is also based on Christianity and high beliefs in your faith. Learning, understanding, and doing the right thing regardless of what you want to do.
Blount tells a story with heart and depth. Through the trials and challenges, love can find you and will carry you through. This book celebrates that message and leaves a big smile on your face! Beautiful!
A couple of reader friends told me I needed to read this book so I dug it out of the middle of my bordering on out of control TBR pile and...yep...they were right. Devoured it in a day and still digesting all the wonderful nuances. Like this:
"When our world goes dark, we must hold hard to the rope of our faith, and trust Gott to lead us out." (p 38)
and this:
"We drive ourselves into confusing places when we take the reins of our lives into our own hands. It is Gott's job to guide us in whatever direction He deems best. Ours is to follow willingly, even when the path doesn't lie along a road we ourselves would choose." (p 276)
I mean, there were so many places where I just had to stop and bask in a phrase or a thought. So many times on this particular reading journey that filled my heart and nourished my soul even as I ached for these characters and what they've endured.
So, parts of Shelter in the Storm are hard to read, but the author doesn't leave her characters (or her readers) in despair. That doesn't mean that everything is wrapped up in a neat little bow by the end. In fact, there are some dangling threads that need to be caught up and followed in the next Johns Mill Amish novel (book two, Strength in the Storm is due out Feb 2022.) Still, there is enough closure in this this story to leave me satisfied even with the unanswered questions still whirling around in my mind. It's a clever writer who can leave a reader satiated and hungry for more at the same time.
I love the community Blount has created -- both Amish and Englisch -- in this sleepy little hamlet suddenly hurled into the limelight. I thought the author did a wonderful job of showing the roll media plays in sensationalizing a tragic event and even manipulating the narrative. Of course, it's all the more emotionally charged because of the Amish desire to live apart. Gah -- but parts of this story twisted my innards into knots!
Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the author has managed to infuse hope and the kind of peace in the midst of turmoil that can only come from placing trust in God. And, there's romance, of course. Sweetly unexpected and not without its own trauma. But there's laughter and tenderness too.
All in all an exceptional beginning to an incredible new series...and I believe this is Laurel Blount's debut Amish novel. I've been reading her contemporary novels for awhile now and I love her storytelling style.
After reading the third book in the series, I was compelled to go back to the beginning and am glad I did.
Following the murder of his parents, Joseph struggles to hold his family and the family business together. While his journey kept my interest, it was Naomi that captured my heart. She grew up with a heart condition which limited her activities and kept her continually weakened. A surgery changed all of that and she was delighted to be doing work just like everyone else away from her family while visiting Johns Mill.
I look forward to reading the next in the series.
SHELTER IN THE STORM by Laurel Blount is the first book I’ve ever read by Ms. Blount but it certainly won’t be the last! The Two main characters, Joseph Hochstedler and Naomi Schrock stole my heart and gained my respect. I really enjoyed the authors writing style and her ability to draw me into the story. Most of the chapters ended in a way that peaked my interest and left me eager to start reading the next one. You won’t be sorry you picked up SHELTER IN THE STORM….your only decision will be which of the author’s other books you want to read next.
Tragedy, forgiveness, love, and other spiritual elements are scattered throughout SHELTER IN THE STORM. Laurel Blount is an amazing writer, conveying every emotion into her characters. Laurel gives her readers a wonderful story of letting go of the past and leaning into the people who are standing by, waiting to help even if when you don’t realize they’ve been there all the time. SHELTER IN THE STORM is a quick read and unputdownable! There were quite a few times when reading it that I wanted to reach into the pages and hug a few of these people with what they were feeling and what they were going through. I found myself laughing one second and then tearing up the next. If you are looking for a beautiful emotional story to pull you out of your book slump, you can’t go wrong with SHELTER IN THE STORM. Laurel Blount is now an author I want to read more of.
In SHELTER IN THE STORM I loved Joseph and Naomi, the primary characters, but I also fell in love with all of the secondary characters as well. Every one of them has an important part to play in this heart tugging story and even though I wanted to reach in and shake one or two of them every now and then, they all weaseled their way into my heart. My emotions were all over the place and I was even reaching for the tissues quite a few times. SHELTER IN THE STORM is not like most Amish stories. It is more like watching the evening news, and then having your heart break for everything this family is going through. I am eager to see what will come next!
This is the first book in the John Mills series by Laurel Blount. I started reading this on a Saturday afternoon and was done by Monday. It’s a wonderful read. Joseph is besieged with trial after trial - the “storm” seems like it will never end. Along comes Naomi, a childhood friend who has weathered many a storm in her own life. She is like the sun, slowly but surely pushing the storm away, shining light back into the lives of Joseph and his family...but mainly Joseph.
Shelter in the Storm brought to mind I Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” This book radiates enduring faith, cautious, yet joyful, hope, and deep, abiding love. Make John Mills the next literary town you visit. I can’t wait to go back!
Shelter in the Storm is the first book in a series I highly recommend, John Mill Amish Romance by Laurel Blount. I read the second book first, but I wish I had read them in order. The Hochstedler family has suffered a traumatic loss, when an unstable Englischer comes into their store and kills both of their parents. The youngest sister, Miriam, sees it all and only survived when the gun jammed. He thought he was in love with Emma, the oldest daughter, and it was her father's fault that she wouldn't "date" him. Now Joseph, the oldest sibling, is trying to hold the family together. Both of his sisters are traumatized, and Caleb, his brother, is angry and wants vengeance. A neighbor, who he had been friendly with as a child, Naomi, has returned to Johns Mill and feels like a burden to her brother's family. She was born with a heart defect and although she has had surgery, she is still treated like she is weak and delicate. She takes a job looking after Miriam and helping her to face life again. Spending so much time together, Joseph and Naomi begin to have feelings for one another. There are some issues and roadblocks, but these two eventually find a way to happiness together.
I loved this story. Although it starts off with grief, trauma, guilt and more, it has a hopeful and uplifting message. Naomi wants to be independent and have a life. She is tired of feeling like a burden to her siblings. She is a thoughtful, caring woman, with a lot of faith. I loved watching her coax Miriam out of her despair, and never give up regardless of the setbacks. Joseph takes his responsibilities as head of the family seriously. He is ready to uproot himself and the family if that is what it takes to start a new life away from prying eyes and terrible memories. This was one of those books that I couldn't put down. I read it long into the night when I should have gone to bed, just one more chapter. As I read this one, I ran the gamut of emotions. There was so much sadness, but there were also happy moments. I could understand the anger and need for vengeance as well, but we all know that won't change anything. The ending is happy, uplifting and full of hope. I am already looking forward to the third book in this series, which is Miriam's story. I highly recommend this one.
This book was so good! I am very anxious to read more in this series. These were such tragic circumstances, yet the book was full of hope and the love story between Joseph and Naomi was perfect.
The author did a great job of showing the way the shooting and aftermath affected each member of the Hochstedler family. One carried guilt, another intense anger, and yet another ended up with PTSD symptoms. And then there was Joseph, trying to hold everyone together. Naomi was such a blessing to him and the family.
Both Joseph and Naomi also had such interesting backstories. Naomi’s health problems growing up made her very empathetic toward others. I really loved how she related to both Joseph and Miriam. And I loved seeing Joseph’s heart heal from his earlier heartbreak and open to Naomi. It was such a sweet connection.
I am so looking forward to reading more books in the series and returning to the Hochstedler family in the future.
Never having read any books by Laurel Blount, I didn't quite know what to expect. Wow, I was kind of blown away right from the start. Shelter in the Storm is a book that starts out with an unbelievably tragic event and continues with a plot that keeps the pages turning. I read the book pretty much in one day as it was hard to put down. Emotions run high as Naomi and Joseph deal with difficult circumstances that are life-changing and seemingly never-ending. Back to back hard blows that were hard to bear, yet, they knew their faith in Gott would bring them through, no matter how deep the grief. I really liked the author's writing style, good dialogue and situations keep the reader's interest high. The characters are strong, relatable, and realistic. Naomi has been through struggles for much of her life and is such an encourager to others in her life. Joseph has ideas for his life and yet when impossible situations come and change is inevitable, he stands firm in his faith and doesn't give in to self-pity. I enjoyed watching the changing aspects of their relationship as the story progressed. The community characteristic of the Amish and strong family ties are something I admire and Blount portrays them well. A Shelter in the Storm is a heartfelt story with unforgettable characters and a message of hope despite desperate times. Readers who enjoy Amish romance will not want to miss this one. I was pleased to see that this book is the first in the Johns Mill Amish Romance series and am looking forward to the next book in the series.
This book what definitely not what I expected! I didn’t read the blurb before I started it because I wanted to be surprised. And boy was I surprised! This wasn’t like many other Amish books that I have read, so that was really nice. This one was very original. I really cared for these characters and the struggles they were dealing with I was able to get invested in the story and wanted to know what is going to happen next for them. I will happily look for more books from this author!
A sweet story of healing and trust
Having read and enjoyed other stories by Laurel Blount, I was curious to see what her Amish fiction would be like. I was delighted to discover an intriguing plot rich with deep concerns of the heart, such as grief, fear, and trust.
Joseph was a very godly man, full of grace even in the face of intense grief. His compassion for the parents of the man who murdered his parents was rather astounding. As he watched what remained of his family cope with the shooting in their own way, he felt as if his family was shattering before his very eyes.
Naomi had a heart that longed to give everything it had in service to others. And yet her health had prevented her from doing just that. And now, despite having surgery to repair the defects in her heart which enabled her to fully serve, her family treated her as a burden and too weak to do anything. My heart ached for her. I loved the way her compassion and serenity overflowed to those around her.
Even though they were very enjoyable characters with these admirable qualities, Joseph and Naomi were perfectly flawed as well, harboring secrets, fear, and anger, making them more relatable.
With the media's fascination with the shooting of Joseph's parents, a major conflict arose as the Amish attempted to stand with Joseph and his family. The horrific lies that were published and an event that occurred to drive Joseph to leave town created a multi-faceted story with an intricate plot.
I recommend Shelter in the Storm to all who enjoy Amish fiction, or even to readers who simply enjoy a story with plenty of conflict and sweet romance.
Shelter In The Storm is a beautiful read! I’m confident you will fall in love with the story and the characters, just as I did! If you love inspirational romance, you need to read this book!
It’s obvious that Laurel Blount cares deeply about her characters, and her love for them is transferred to the reader.
The story touches upon many themes which are current to the world we all share. Joseph and Naomi must navigate through ever-increasing “storms” in their lives, a situation we can relate to, given the times we live in. However, warmth and love are never far away. So even though life gets stormy, the reader always feels like they’re being held in safe, caring hands.
For me, the main characters’ ability to maintain their integrity, to hold true to their beliefs, in the face of what could only be described as crippling setbacks - this is one of the most beautiful aspects of the story.
Another theme woven through the book is the ephemeral nature of life, and the importance of living one day at a time, of living in the moment, or appreciating what’s in front of you. Also, the Amish ability to be patient, to trust God’s plan, is inspiring.
There are so many beautiful themes touched upon in Shelter In The Storm, but the underlying strength of this book is the characters’ deep belief in, and trust of, Gott. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Shelter in the Storm is Laurel Blount's debut book in the world of Amish Fiction. WOW!
I have been a fan of her Christian Fiction stories, but this book knocks it right out of the ballpark.
We are introduced to the Johns Mill Amish community and several of its residents. The story focuses on Joseph Hochstedler and Naomi Schrock. The Hochstedler family is devastated by a horrendously tragic event and how they deal with the aftermath surrounding the events. Naomi was born with a heart defect that was thought to have been surgically corrected, but she is dealing with her returning health concerns.
How do these two life long friends deal with the pressures on themselves and yet find a way to happiness?
Laurel has created a town full of rich, deep, wonderful characters. The story is so filled with emotion. I laughed, I cried, I yelled and I want more. This story can be read as a stand alone book, but there was one question left unanswered and I cannot wait to see the next in this series, hoping to find my answer.
I highly recommend this book and if you haven't read any of her previous stories, they are definitely worth finding.
Shelter I the Storm is a very inspiring story written by Laurel Blount. This story is set in an Amish community, John's Mill. This story opens with a a very tragic event and builds upon it throughout the story. Within this story the reader will learn of forgiveness, family, love, and faith. There is also a friendship from childhood that takes on a new meaning. When the tragedy occurs it forces a young Amish man to step up and become the head of the household which he feels less than qualified to do. With the help of his community things start to heal and then a whole new set of problems start. I enjoyed this story and the author has done an amazing job keeping the readers interest. I look forward to the next book in this series.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
This book is not like most Amish stories, it is more like watching the evening news, and then gasping, that poor family.
We are there with the survivors of the Hochstedler family, and yes, there is anger, and some have survivor’s guilt, will this family be able to live their faith and offer forgiveness? Or will this be the catalyst to take revenge and leave their community?
The author has done a wonderful job of giving us a story that pulls you in and won’t let go. There are a lot of twist and turns here, and some need to see what is under their noses.
I loved the ending here, but could have stayed for a long time for updates on this family!
I have a new favorite Amish book for 2021.
This book is chock full of emotion and love. It will tug at your heart, make you gasp, make you cry, and curl your toes in excitement. Read with tissues on hand.
I enjoyed that it takes place in Tennessee as it gives us Amish genre readers a different view from the traditional Pennsylvania, Ohio, or Indiana.
A very clean read with no sex and no cursing. I would have no issues giving a copy to an older teenager. A great book to show how with determination and faith you can overcome adversity thrown your way.
I'm excited to read more by this author.
Shelter in the Storm is a refreshing new addition to Amish fiction. Laurel Blount offers an inside view of the challenges to faith, family, and community when tragedy strikes. This beauty from ashes story of love and hope immediately drew me into the lives of both Joseph and Naomi. You will root for them through each soul-stirring, romantic, well-written page.
Shelter in the Storm by Laurel Blount is an emotional novel. A violent act changes a families’ life forever. We get to see how they grieve and move forward after this tragic event. We are taken to Johns Mill, Tennessee where the Hochstedler family lives on land that has been in their family for generations. Naomi Schrock offers to help the grieving family. She loves feeling helpful and doing normal activities. After a life of being ill, normalcy is welcome. I was quickly swept into this heartbreaking tale. I thought Shelter in the Storm was well-written with realistic characters. I enjoyed the setting of Johns Mill. The author’s descriptions brought the scenes alive. I found this story to be an accurate representation. The Hochstedler’s have suffered a terrible loss, but they are unable to grieve in private. The media has descended on the town causing more problems. When the family is starting to piece things back together, they are given startling news that causes them more difficulties. Each member of the family is affected differently. The romance between Joseph and Naomi is sweet. I like how the story played out. It was wonderful how the community came together to help the Hochstedler family. I am amazed at the Amish’s ability to forgive those who have wronged them. It is one thing to forgive, but you cannot forget. Living each day as it comes and enjoying the beauty around us are two themes in the book. Trusting in God’s plan is another. I like how the author tied the title into the story. Shelter in the Storm is a poignant Amish tale that will touch your heart.
Shelter in the Storm is an exciting and emotional read. I was engaged with the characters from the beginning, especially Naomi. Even with her past trials, she went through, she is a compassionate woman holding tight to her faith.
The story is about two Amish people trying to get over tragedy and continue on with a forgiving heart even though tragedy strikes again.
I loved the way the author provided a good picture of Amish life and realize they aren't much different emotionally. They struggle with some of the same issues we do. It's an inspirational story steeped in faith and second chances.
Naomi Schrock has had a lifetime of heart problems, but a surgery finally restored her to good health. When she discovers that Joseph Hochstedler is in need of assistance, she steps in to help as much as possible with his business, but moreso with his sister. Joseph has experienced tragedy of the worst time and he does what he can to stabilize his family.
Since the tragedy that hit his family was so awful, it has drawn the media's attention. They have a bite and they will not let go. Meanwhile, Joseph and Naomi begin to develop feelings for one another. However, neither can trust their hearts, and putting their faith into the future seems truly impossible.
This heartwarming story shares the trials of a family that is rooted in faith, love and commitment. The story is also about values and compromise. Compassion for the characters in this wonderful book came quite easy, making this a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I love that Shelter in the Storm is the first book in a new series. I cannot wait to see what characters will be featured and how they deal with the pressures of life, all while remaining true to their faith, with love as a backdrop that leads to a happy future.
Many thanks to Berkley and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
“In the darkness, we cling to what Gott showed us in the daytime, ja.” page 155
This is one powerful story filled with tragedy and a lot of emotions throughout the tale. Joseph and Naomi struggles were so realistic I hurt for them with all they had endured and new challenges they faced throughout their story. Their characteristics complimented each other with Naomi’s compassion, gentle ways and Joseph strength even during the difficult times as he clung to his faith. Will their hearts be able to accept all that is transpiring with Naomi’s health issues and the Englischers hassle to Joseph’s family.
I was grateful there was a copy of this book through our library inter-loan services. I have expressed my own opinion as no review was required.
SHELTER IN THE STORM by Laurel Blount is the first book in the Johns Mill Amish Romance series. It’s the well-crafted, heart tugging story of the Hockstedler family and the sweet romance between Joseph Hockstedler and Naomi Schrock.
When an Englischer young man seems to be unrealistically attracted towards Emma Hockstedler, things turn so very wrong. It ends with him murdering her parents, Elijah and Levonia, in their store and only leaving Miriam, the youngest of the family, alive when his gun jammed. Although not injured physically, the mental damage is significant. Now the man of the family, Joseph’s shoulder are heavy with responsibilities and a heart heavy with grief.
Emma, one of the twins, had been spared because they thought not having her in the store would make the Englischer come to his senses and know that his feeling weren’t returned. This leaves her with feeling responsible for the events that took place. Since it’s her that the press is so determined to get to for their story, she decides to spare the family and go stay with their Uncle Melvin and Aunt Lella in Oak Point where they live in a stricter, smaller Amish community. There she can stay safe, hope the press will lose interest and help in all the care that her cousin Henry, who has both physical and mental issues, needs.
Caleb, Emma’s twin and younger brother to Joseph, has always been a hot head. Their father had always been the only one to reason with him. Now he can’t accept that not only are his parents dead, but the man that murdered them has escaped justice. Recently married to Rhonda, the local bishop’s daughter and only child, he wants her to jump the fence and leave with him as he searches for Trevor Abbott so he can face the crimes he’s committed. With both baptized and members of the church, Rhonda knows that to leave would mean turning their backs on the church and being shunned by the church, community and family. Although not a big deal to Caleb who had only joined the church to get Rhonda to marry him, Rhonda’s faith is strong making it a step she cannot do. She knows that in the eyes of the church she will be married and unable to accept help from the church. Since to the church you are married for life, she will always be tied to this man about to walk out on her. Her life will be tough, but it’s what she must do. She’s so saddened by the fact that her love wasn’t enough to keep Caleb there.
During her childhood and health issue with her heart, Naomi Schrock’s best and most dependable friend had always been Joseph. He always took time for her and made her smile when everyone else thought her too brittle to play with or worth the effort. He didn’t make her feel like a burden because of the time and money she had cost him. She’s always had a soft spot in her heart for Joseph. After heart surgery to correct the Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome they’ve know she’s had since she was two, she is now fit and physically able to repay him for his kindness. She can maintain the home, cook the meals and be there to encourage Miriam so she can get better. Can she do it and guard her heart to this man who already owns a piece of it?
Joseph once thought he would marry Rhonda, but his procrastination ended with his brother beating him to the draw. Will his eyes open to the fact that maybe all things happen as God intended and the woman that was meant to be his fraa (wife) wasn’t Rhonda? Dare Naomi dream of a normal life with a husband, a home and a family of her own where she’s not being passed around from relative to relative and looked upon as a burden that someone has to shelter? When Naomi’s health starts to decline again, will she face it alone or will she realize that help from those that really love you isn’t a burden for them? Will selling the farm become a necessity or will a suggestion from unlikely source solve a major financial need? Can Joseph deal with the press in a way that shows the Englisch and the Amish that they aren’t so different in the many ways?
SHELTER IN THE STORM is a page turning story that tugs on several of your emotions throughout the pages. Laurel Blount tells a story of family, sorrow, healing, forgiveness, love, romance, sacrifice, and faith – in family, church, community and most of all God’s plans for us. There are so many possible stories to branch out from within this wonderful first story that I’m hoping this is a very long series. This first in the series book gets my FIVE STARS! Anxious for more in the series and will be anxiously waiting for each new release.
This is a great book with lots of different angles within the story. First, you’ve got the shooting. That changes everything for everyone in the story. It rocks the entire Amish community but also the English one as well as they are both involved.
Because of the shooting changes come to Joseph and Naomi. Joseph must take over as the man of his family now that his father is gone. Their milk business is gone and they own a store in town now, but Joseph wants nothing to do with the store with the fact that his parents were murdered there.
Add in a brother full of anger and rebellion and a sister so full of anxiety she can’t even leave her room and he has his hands full. When his brother leaves the Amish community to find the person responsible for killing his parents even more falls upon Joseph alone.
Naomi enters the story in that she once was close to Joseph as a friend when he was the only normal person who wanted to be with her due to her heart condition. Now that she’s had surgery she can live a normal life. She’s been helping her cousin postpartum to take care of her baby and house. Now she changes gears to care for Joseph’s sister.
But that’s not all that’s happening! This is a wonderful book and I really hope you read it. I enjoyed reading it. It read really quickly and I found myself driven to keep reading to get through and find out the ending.
"I know that you are struggling now to set aside your own feelings for the good of the family, like you did when it came time to sell the hard. Two such hard blows back-to-back are not so easy to bear, but you must keep trusting in the Lord. When our world goes dark, then we must hold hard to the rope of our faith , and trust Gott to lead us out. He is merciful and will bring the good out of our troubles , in His own time."
The changes in Joseph's life are disappointing, heartbreaking and throughout the course of this book, even tragic. Faith is an important part of the Amish community, and Joseph is struggling to hang on to his. Naomi, who is in the community because she is helping out her cousin, ends up providing support to Joseph's hurting family. She has had struggles of her own and does not want to return to being dependent on everyone. She wants to be needed, and her peaceful optimism sustains all of them from despairing.
Although there are elements that are found in many Amish books (doubting the faith, family conflict, curious outsiders), I do think that the author managed to combine them in a fresh way. I made a note of quite a few quotes that I liked, so that is definitely a sign that the book spoke to me. There were some unpredictable elements. The author definitely is setting up the series well. Even though this is not always my favorite genre, I want to read more in this series. The characters were interesting, and the storylines were well-developed.
I did review this book through NetGalley as a part of a JustRead tour and was provided a complimentary copy. I voluntarily signed up for the tour. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this story. There's tragedy but there is hope is within the pages, which makes this the best and most compelling story. The characters steal your heart, and you can't help but root for them to find their way and find happiness once again. I am super excited to jump straight to book two in this series to see what happens next for these characters.
Amish Fiction is my Ultimate Favorite Genre of books to read. I have read a couple books by Laurel Blount and was excited to hear about a new series of Amish Fiction by her. Shelter in the Storm is Book 1 in the Johns Mill Amish Romance.
An Englischer enters the Hochstedler's General Store and begins shooting. Joseph Hochstedler,owner of the General Store, struggles greatly after the shooting with being supportive for his family with the death of a family member in the shooting. The family is trying to grieve in private, but the Media is making that impossible. Naomi Schrock is a lifelong friend of Joseph Hochstedler and she wants to help them through this family tragedy. Naomi has suffered from a heart issue since childhood, but has always wanted to be of service to others. Naomi and Joseph find themselves attracted to one another, Naomi even noticing she is "in love" with Joseph. Will Naomi being present, help Joseph and his family with their loss? Will Naomi and Joseph begin more then a friendship?
A VERY sweet Romance story! I truly enjoyed this book. It was filled with Twists and Turns, just as I thought the story was going one way, it changed! I LOVE a book that is very unpredictable. I also enjoyed how Naomi and Joseph had a nurturing friendship that seemed to blossom as Naomi was being a helper to the family. A WONDERFUL Amish Fiction Book! A book that anyone will enjoy!
