Oh, how much delight a kitten or a cat can add to someone's life. Although Nadia loves playing with the kittens her friend Violet and her mother are fostering as part of Violet's mother's work at the animal rescue, she is unable to have a pet of her own. Because there is such a great need for foster families, Nadia's parents agree to foster Gracie, a pregnant feral cat who needs to be in a quiet place. Gracie is rather standoffish at first, but eventually she starts to trust Nadia, and gives birth to five sweet kittens. Nadia's in love with all of them, but she adores Luna, the smallest one in Gracie's litter. One by one, the other kittens are adopted, but not Luna. Things come to a climax when a door and a window that have been accidentally left open lead to Luna exploring the wider world outside and almost result in tragedy when she ventures onto the rain-slick roof. Nadia's father comes to the rescue, and the family realizes just how much those two cats mean to them. The black-and-white sketches and the immersive description of all this drama allow readers to feel the tension experienced by Nadia and the emotional rollercoaster of trying to save Luna. Anyone who loves cats will cheer at the ending and be pleased for this furry family and its human companions. The author describes Nadia's yearning for a pet of her own and her patience with Gracie quite well, and many feline companions will recognize some of their own experiences and emotions in Nadia's as well as in her father's capitulation to Gracie's charms.
