Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

Ruth Garber, a world-class geologist, and her granddaughter Stella, a geology student, are on an offshore drilling rig when chaos sets in. The ship loses all power leaving Ruth, Stella, and the crew of the rig dead in the water. Ruth is only on the rig to help with a software upgrade and Stella wants to learn all she can from her famous grandmother.

Ruth is left in charge when it seems that the captain of the rig is missing. Ruth’s investigations lead her to believe that someone on the rig has sabotaged it. With only a skeletal crew it shouldn't be too hard to find the culprit, right? What is going on? Why did the rig lose power?

No Rescue definitely grabbed my attention from the moment I turned to that first page. It is filled with lots of twists. Twists that took me by surprise and kept me hanging on from one to another. I couldn’t turn those pages fast enough as I kept trying to figure out what was going on.

Especially when people started to disappear. Where were they? Were they still on the big metal ship? They could be hiding anywhere. I mean it is a big ship. Did they fall overboard? If so did they fall or jump? Oh, the mystery alone was enough to keep me glued to my seat.

No Rescue is a great start to a brand-new world. I can’t wait to see what the next book in the EMP Sabotage series has to offer. No Rescue has some amazing characters.

I love worlds like the one created for No Rescue and highly recommend it to all fans of the genre. I highly suggest that you grab your copy of No Rescue today!

I received this book as an ARC prior to its release. Read and finished in one day. Very good read, very easy read. Grace has stuck to what she knows but moved it to the ocean, to an oil rig. Good story line in the first book and leaves the reader ready for more in the next book. This book introduces the main characters and the story line that will follow in the rest of the books. I am excited to see what else this series has to offer.

The cover would certainly grab by attention on a book shelf so it does its job well! It fits the book well and the cover could really be a “scene” from within the book.
The book begins with Ruth a highly qualified and much respected geologist and her granddaughter Stella having a rather rough helicopter flight out to the offshore drilling rig. Ruth is there to consult and help out with a new software upgrade. Stella is there to watch and learn basically as she is still a geology student. Stella is struggling to read the latest news about a terrorist group on her phone with an increasingly poor phone signal. Stella is being teased about the lack of “phone time” perhaps being a good thing and then the flight gets rather bumpy so much so it has one of the returning rig workers going pale! Things go from bad to worse when once dropped off the helicopter actually seems to lose power and crash! It is soon discovered that no one has any phone service and all the rig electronics seem to have stopped too. Now Ruth and Stella are stuck in the middle of the sea with no immediate prospect of rescue. Some of the staff on the rig are sent to shore using one of the lifeboats but Stella sneakily gets in and then gets back out of the lifeboat she wants to stay with her grandmother.
Whilst this is happening on the rig, John and his son Curtis are out fishing on their boat at sea when suddenly their machinery starts to go awry. They have to let a net full of fish go free in an attempt to save themselves and their boat and end up crashing into the rig then being “rescued” by those on the rig.
John & Curtis both have useful skills and Ruth soon sets them to work helping her attempt to get an old generator working. However, things are far from straight forward with staff members going missing, then one is found dead, it is becoming apparent that there is not just a saboteur on board, but a saboteur who isn’t afraid to kill to protect their identity and forward their cause. When it is revealed that the very terrorists that Stella was reading about on the helicopter are responsible for what is going on both on the rig and for the raging fires that those on the rig can see along the shoreline, it seems like all is lost.
I love the set of determined characters within this book. The way Ruth especially refuses to give up or give in. Ruth has Stella to assist her and the with the arrival of John and Curtis who immediately offer to help in any way they can, it makes you get behind Ruth and believe she can fix anything.
I did kind of guess the identity of the saboteur before it was revealed in the book but the whole process Ruth, Stella, John & Curtis go through of who they think it could be and why makes for really interesting reading too. The book ends on a cliff hanger, and has made me really eager to read more as soon as possible!
My immediate thoughts upon finishing reading the book were, Oooo, strangely I had my suspicions about who the actual 'bad guy' was all along! Then I started thinking about what could/would happen next, can the survivors guard the station and prevent terrorists from getting on it and using it? How will they survive with dwindling supplies? So many questions!
Summing up, really enjoyed it and looking forward to reading more!

This is book one of the EMP Sabotage series and the main characters are geologist Ruth Garber and her granddaughter Stella, a geology student at Texas A&M, where her grandmother teaches. Ruth is a world class geologist and has been called out to the Mora oil drilling rig, to help install and test a new software update and control panel on the rig. As well as the benefits for the oil company, Ruth hopes to use the software to help with earthquake predicting and give advance warning of tsunamis, thus saving lives. They fly out by helicopter to the rig, with Parker Jamison, an oil platform worker, who is an old friend of Ruth’s and who she has known fro years. The rig will onky be running a skeleton crew, as they can’t do much until the new console is set up and running. The weather is already getting bad as they fly out to the rig and Stella isn’t feeling very comfortable with it all, but wanted to come along to prove to her gran that she is worthy of her praise and to learn from the woman who raised her and who she admires greatly! Stella concentrates on her phone to distract herself from the bad ride and sees an article about AILS (A-Led Society), a new terrorist organisation that want to create a tech led society where people don’t have to work anymore! They are greeted on the rig by one of the supervisors, Kay and Bestie, a back lab who was rescued from a passing dingy. She takes them to meet the rig boss Clark Ives, who doesn’t exactly have the best level of personal hygiene, especially in cramped quarters such as on the rig.
A loud boom that shakes the room, gets them racing back outside, to see Parker and another worker struggling with a pallet the helicopter is lowering. It has smashed against a vital lift mechanism for lowering the lifeboats and damaged it considerably! The weather is getting worse and being out on the deck with the low safety guide wires and slippery deck, is asking for trouble. Shortly after, the rig suddenly loses al power, not even cell phones are working. Looking out to sea, they see the helicopter’s rotor slow down and the machine fall into the sea. They wonder what they can do from the rig, but it seems almost impossible to even reach where it went down and there was likely no survivors. They don’t realise then, just how much danger they are actually in, as the terrorist group has someone on the rig who is sabotaging any efforts to regain power. The crew manage to get one of the lifeboats raised up to the deck and some of the crew disembark, and Stella was sent with them. Unbeknown to her gran, she sneaked out the opposite door, before it could be closed, not wanting to leave her gran alone with people she didn’t know. Ruth sets to work trying to see what she can salvage with the new console, but Clark disappears and Ruth has to take charge, which some don’t take well.
A small fishing boat is seen drifting towards the rig, on a collision course with one of the rig’s leg structures. On board are John Baron and his son Curtis, who were just about to pull in the biggest catch of their season, when everything went pear shaped. Losing power caused the weigh of the net to almost pull the boat over and they had to cut the net away. They also lost their anchor as the weather deteriorated, meaning they had no way to control their boat. After a long night, they came into sight of the rig and collided heavily with the support leg and can’t break free. They have no way of climbing up to the rig and it is up to the crew to figure out a way to bring them up, something one or two of them are not so keen on. There will be more mouths to feed and most of their food supplies were ruined with the power outage and the storm. A pulley system is rigged and the two make it on board, somewhat battered and Curtis with a head wound. After getting sorted out, Ruth finds that John has the perfect skills she needs to fix a generator she found in Clark’s room that could maybe power the new console and her new software upgrade. But John soon figures out that the real reason behind the items not working is clearly sabotage and that this person is still on board! First Clark disappeared, thought lost over the safety wire’s, now another member of crew is missing and Ruth sorts out search parties, but the rig has a lot of hiding places and there are only twelve of them on board now. Searching again, they find a grim discovery and what might have been an accidental death is made more suspicious by the seemingly obvious manner of death, after the EMP took out all the power!
Ruth has her suspicions about who it might be, but there are a number of people who could be the killer and saboteur. John and Curtis heard an emergency broadcast just before they lost power, about the AILS terrorist group and the threat of an EMP, but couldn’t hear it all due to interference from the storm. Ruth believes there are a core group of people she can trust with her life, but is she right or wrong? Her actions are going to lead to more issues and it will seem she is not as legendary and always right, as her granddaughter thought her to be. Sticking with a buddy, should have brought safety for them all, but when she breaks her own rules, determined to catch the saboteur in the act, it will leave her with a consequence she may not recover from. There is obvious chemistry between Ruth and John, as well as Stella and Curtis. Matters on the mainland seem to be even worse than on board the rig, and originally they thought themselves quite lucky to be where they are. Okay, they have limited supplies, but nobody should be able to reach them and bring danger to their rig. They just have to figure out who is causing the danger already on the rig and try to put a stop to it, so they can at least survive for now! So much more to come as the terrorist group are finally revealed at the end of the story, but not too much. Just enough to reveal that those on the rig are not as safe as they had hoped, and the rig has some sort of purpose for those responsible for the EMP. I look forward to catching the next two books in the series and finding out what those stranded on the rig can do, to ensure their own safety. Also, what is up with Stella and her need to have her knapsack on her at all times? What is she hiding in there? I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Geologist Ruth Garber takes her 19yr old granddaughter Stella (no last name) with her on a helicopter to her latest job site..an ocean oil drilling platform. That platform becomes almost as much a character as the humans working on it. It's so interesting that I Googled then YouTubed more information about the platforms and enclosed lifeboats. Anytime I learn something new like that, it enhances my enjoyment. Kudos to Grace for that alone. 😁 Because those employed on platforms are there for months at a time they are usually staffed with medical and cooking teams so injuries can be handled quickly and efficiently and hungry workers who often do 10-12hr shifts can easily get their nutritional needs met so they can concentrate on the job, drilling oil to meet their countries needs. Everyone on board needs to be dedicated, especially support staff.

Unfortunately, a huge storm is making everything more difficult. Then after landing, as the helicopter leaves, the power goes out, causing it to crash!! Ruth's age is never directly stated, but clues hint towards early 60s. Smart, savvy and organized, Ruth and the boss, Clark, send a large proportion of the already skeleton crew home in 1 of the enclosed lifeboats including all cooks and medical support staff. 🤷🏾
When Clark disappears Ruth takes charge. The most important thing is to get the new system she was sent there to get working up and running. It wasn't yet connected, so if that gets done, they can refrigerate food supplies and get a message out for help to arrive.

What they don't know is, a terrorist group has set off an EMP and 1 of the few left on board works with the terrorists. During the continuing storm Ruth and Stella's love interests fishing boat crashes into the platform. John Baron, a retired electrician turned commercial fisherman and his 20yr old son Curtis join the crew. John is strong in the areas where Ruth is weak and vice versa. Now if they can only figure out who the murdering saboteur is?

Ruth's greatest weakness is her resolute refusal to listen, even when she creates the rule. Then when she goes off on her own, she can't seem to understand why "rules for thee but not for me" gets her resented. Her second greatest weakness is 1 we ALL share as humans...that being she thinks everyone thinks like her at their core. For example, she is super loyal and honest, holding negative thoughts/feelings close to her chest, not acting on suspicion without evidence. However, people who choose evil think everyone else is just as evil and manipulative as they themselves are or that they are "suckers" who deserve whatever they get. This is a life lesson many have learned up close and personal by age 50-55. In this way, Ruth is a late bloomer!

A consistent problem I see in nearly all of Hamilton's books rears its ugly head here too. No one cooks, not even grilling so the crew is basically living off energy bars&drinks and an occasional sandwich. No one has any real medical skills. Injuries are assured in the Apocalypse, so because nutritional needs aren't being met and they are under stress, brain fog and physical weakness is creeping in. Injuries will take longer to heal and because no medical personnel are aboard to remind people, hygiene is going to the wayside. Infections from injuries are nearly guaranteed. There's first aid and probably trauma kits aboard, most likely even a small clinic but blood and other bodily fluids are being handled on top of commonly used items like tables and closets where maintenance materials are left. Dead bodies are left to begin decomposition in dark, enclosed rooms, not even wrapped in plastic in a system that must rely on recycled air, at least to a certain extent. Why aren't they using body bags to hang the dead in or close to the water where the process is slowed and infection contained. Bodies leak putrid gases when deceased. The group constructed a pulley, why not use another or simply have a service, find the person's ID and other items, set those aside for the families then bury the body at sea.

Overall, I can see a real "team" being forged together and am super pleased to see "age" doesn't stop "heroism"!

Apocalypse / Stranded / Oil rig
One of us = killer
💖 Grandmother + Granddaughter 💖
A dog 🐶

The Good 😇

Setting ⚫
Loved the oil rig setting. Such a breath of fresh air. So far from the normal torn up city apocalypse.. which I do love as well, but I appreciated the effort taken to make it something different, and it worked!

EMP🪫
There are countless ways preppers have predicted the big doomsday, but I think an EMP attack is one of the lesser talked about ones. Again, appreciate the effort.

Whodunnit 🔪
Easy to guess from the get-go, but most usually are and it's not such a bad thing to me. I just liked that there was a whodunnit element. Stuck on an oil rig with someone taking people out one by one, yes please!

Characters
Overall, the characters were fine. I love the grandmother/granddaughter duo, I liked Kay, she was believable, and I loved the addition of Bestie 🐶

The Bad 🫥

Ruth.

Good lordy, please, I can't.

Honestly, the one reason I can't continue with this series.

She is overbearing. So much so that I started skipping her parts towards the end.

She also seems to have many more talents at her disposal than the average geologist, that's for sure. Bit of a know-it-all and can-do-it-all.

Did she forget her full title? Is she really actually a geologist engineer? Or maybe an E.T. with powers unknown to man?

Nope, no, it's confirmed several times, she's a plain old geologist (absolutely no disrespect to geologists)

Soooo, shouldn't Parker be fixing the lift? Shouldn't Parker be fixing the generator? You know, as he is the maintenance worker, and it is his job to, you know, fix things.

Oh, and she's bossy.. very bossy. Just ask Kay. Big shout out to Kay who couldn't stand a bar of Ruth either *high fives*

Please, I can't take another second.

But other than that, A for effort.

Excellent Start to EMP Series

I've now listened to a few series by this author, and she certainly seems to have found a winning formula for EMP or other un/natural disaster stories. I certainly have noticed a particular story arc she favors, but this is not a bad thing, as it works! I liked how the heroine is not only a STEM one but also an older woman well respected in her geology field. In this guise, she is visiting an oil rig platform to do some work when an EMP changes everybody's world. Her college-age granddaughter, a geology major who hopes to follow in her grandmother's footsteps and wants to impress her on this trip, is also along for the ride. I loved the heroine’s take-charge, no-nonsense attitude. She certainly was able to get a good read on people who came into the story, even if she didn't quite have an accurate understanding of the character of somebody she trusted. As always happens in these EMP books, the book is filled with the group dealing with a variety of challenges, both technical and human. This book gets surprisingly violent, so if you don't have a stomach for that, skip this book. I liked how the book had a glimmer of romance for Grandma amongst it all! Go, Granny go! So many revelations came at the end, but the author did a good job planting the seeds for them so it completely made sense within the story's flow. As always, the author uses the epilogue to tease what will happen in the next book. I am certainly intrigued to see what happens when the group of people we meet in that book-ender meet up with Granny and crew. Luckily, I have the next book queued up and ready to go!

I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.

Thank you to Relay Publishing and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ruth Garber and her granddaughter, Stella, are transported to an oil rig platform where Ruth is to perform some software updates on the rig's computer system. Moments after landing, in the midst of a storm, the power for the platform cuts out and in this exact moment the helicopter that just took off, loses power and crashes into the sea.
The rest of the story follows the crew in their attempt to figure out what happened, restore power and alert authorities to their predicament. When crew members start to disappear and equipment is sabotaged , Ruth and Stella need to figure out who and why, while still trying to repair communications to get help from the mainland to rescue the survivors.

This is the first book in an EMP attack series, as well as being the first book I've read by this author. This wasn't the book for me. Sometimes I'll be intrigued enough by the first to pick up the second, this wasn't the case for this series. It felt like a lot of running around by characters with little actual storyline. I was disappointed with the story as this is usually right up my alley, in this case I just have no desire to continue on to the next book.

This was the second book of this author that i have read, and since i did enjoy the first one i thought this would be more of the same but with a different story (both were about an EMP), well it started great I really did like Ruth and Stella and latter the father and son that came aboard… but what let me down was the behind story, the one that was like a crime novel, missing people, murdered people and an inclosed space, few people could be the murder and the mole, I figured who the criminal was, way before Ruth did, and she was like a very smart person…

hmm maybe I didn’t like that much because I don’t really like criminal novels, yes I did enjoy a couple of those, like ”and then there were none”, or some of the earlier Sherlock Holmes story, but in my opinion, it was lacking a bit in the mystery department, it was OK, just not like an Arthur Conan Doyle.

Thank you NetGalley and Relay Publishing for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Several issues with this book. 1). Repeated same word usage. Astoundingly annoying. 2). Plot was guessable around the one-fifth mark. So much for the mystery side of the book. 3). Attempts to throw the reader off the identity of the true villain is extremely poor, utterly monotonous and glaringly obvious. 4). Except for the MC, Ruth, all other characters were minimally developed. 5). The book just did not play out smoothly; characters' personalities changed on the whim of the author and disrupted the flow of the storylines.

I found nothing special, mysterious or even remotely thrilling within this book. I deduced the reasoning behind the oil platform's power loss by the fourth chapter. However, the characters took MUCH longer, despite having technical backgrounds on engineering.

Dialogue was stiff and stunted, world-building was above average and intrigue was minimal. I do not think I was be continuing this series anytime soon.

Grace and her granddaughter Stella are stranded on an oil rig when the helicopter that dropped them off is taken out by an EMP. Left on the oil rig they quickly realize that they too were affected by the EMP. No power, cell phones, and a murder mystery to solve leave Grace, Stella, and the skeleton crew on the rig on high alert. Meanwhile, John and his son are stranded on a fishing boat headed straight toward the oil rig. No Rescue is book one and a great start to the EMP Sabotage series. The writing is well done, the characters are interesting, and the story is packed with mystery, intrigue, twists, and a cliffhanger ending that left me wanting book two asap. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next for everyone. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping novel

a different sort of book for me to read and i have to admit to really liking it

its set offshore on a drilling rig which always fascinates me about life on board one of those...but the story starts when a helicopter lands on the rig with ruth and stella who are there to oversee some work but not long after they land all the power goes, nothing is working and then people start to go missing....

we also meet a couple of fishermen who are also stranded at sea with no power and as their boat makes its way further out to sea they manage to crash into the drilling rig

as more disasters occur on the rig could there really be someone among them doing it....

interesting read and i cant wait for the next book in the series

The story starts as brilliant geologist Ruth Garber and her granddaughter Stella, a geology student, are flying to the Mora oil rig to install a new system. Shortly after they arrive, however, the power goes out to the rig, the generators fail, and the departing helicopter goes down. The crew and Ruth scramble to find out what happened and solve each problem as they pop up, but then people start to disappear. Will any of them survive to be rescued?
This book takes the apocalyptic EMP theme to a whole new unique setting as the crew struggle to survive miles from shore with very limited resources. Add to that the locked room type thriller with characters just disappearing and I couldn't wait to find out what happens next. I'm excited to start the second book in the series now.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
Ruth brings her granddaughter Stella along with her to a job on an offshore oil rig. Shortly after landing the power goes out, on the rig and in the helicopter that is leaving them. Now Ruth, Stella, and the rest of the workers are stranded on the rig without any way off or to find out what is happening. To make things worse, people begin disappearing.
This book is a mix of genres, a terrorist/emp thriller mixed with a murder mystery. The focus of the story is on the investigation, with the emp as the background and a complicating factor. This was an interesting story and a quick read. To top it off the dog is happy and lives.
This is a good read for fans of emp reads, thrillers, and murder mysteries.

This story is riveting as the author leaves no stone unturned as he spins together mystery, suspense, intrigue, deception, and thrills into this captivating plot. This type of story I thoroughly enjoy. The characters are well defined and the scenes brilliantly written. I was there with the characters, caught up in the intensity, teetering on the edge of my seat during the dramatic scenes. This incredible story keeps pulsing on until the final conclusion, which has a “wow” finish. Fantastic story not to miss!.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. The story setting was really unique: a group of people are trapped on an oil rig called the Mako when suddenly an EMP takes out their power and their ability to communicate with anyone on land for help. Then people start disappearing and turning up dead. This book was full of drama and suspense. I had to keep reading to find out who the killer was and why they were doing this. The story ends with a cliffhanger as the individuals responsible for the EMP attack begin to make their way to the Mako. I'm eagerly waiting for the second book in the series!

A little slow.

Not a bad idea for this type of situation. The fact that it takes place in a remote location is good. I don't think the people would be willing to listen to an outsider, not as easy as you make it out to be. EMP will have cause some of the worst damage to electrical systems, no solid state devices that are not properly protected, will be fried. The list of things that will be fried is endless, cars, TVs, computers, radios, and worst of all, heart pacemakers. The story will get better as you go, I hope.

A grandmother with her (adult) granddaughter, on a short staffed oil platform when an EMP fries the electronics and someone in the crew seems to work against them. This book was less of the standard post apocalypse and more murder mystery, and I liked it!
The main character Ruth is likable and the story is exciting but still gives this cozy feeling. The ending was somewhat predictable but it still gets a five star rating from me!

I did enjoy this! I found it to be more of a murder mystery in a way than an apocalyptic adventure to be honest though. Great idea for a story being stuck on an oil drilling platform when an EMP goes off! Brilliant! Shame as I felt this could of been amazing story but it fell into people problems instead of looking at the real issues this situation would create. I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes, hopefully more on the survival side..

I loved the storyline with Ruth and her granddaughter Stella stranded on an oil rig surrounded by nothing but water with no light, no cells, massive waves, and someone is hunting the survivors. John and his son are on a fishing boat that's adrift headed right for the oil rig. There is action, drama, and suspense. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I love all things apocalyptic, especially when an EMP just comes out of nowhere. Or so it seems, it did. This was a great read, great characters, good development of them and their relationships. Nice 'plot twist' if you'd call it that, I kinda saw where a thing or two was leading.

Look forward to plunging myself into book 2 real soon.

Action packed.

Ruth is sent to an offshore rig to do some updates. She takes her granddaughter along with her but when an EMP hits everything changes. I liked the different location but I personally questioned some of the 'decisions' that were made. Overall still a good story. Enough suspense added to the whole EMP set of problems to keep the story moving along. Good story and I'll keep reading the series.

This is an exciting start to a new series. Ruth and her granddaughter get caught on an oil rig when an EMP occurs and changes their lives forever. Follow along as they battle the elements and a sabatour on the rig. What will happen to these brave souls?.

An exciting science fiction story set on an oil rig. The story is thrilling and keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout until the end. Time seems to fly by fast because I was engrossed in the story. The plot throws some twists and comes to a satisfying finish. This is great start to a new series.

I found this book hard to read and easy to predict. I find it hard when each character has two different names and even though it is a grandma or granddaughter that person uses their name instead of "grandma" or other in their thoughts?

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

grandma does it all. riiight.

Grandma is not only a geologist, but a software engineer, heavy equipment mechanic, medic, rescue paramedic, and leader of oil platform roughnecks. No one else seems able to do anything. Yeah. Totally believable (not). And totally not worth reading. Don’t waste your time.
