Kaii Haku has lived his whole life in the shadow of his cruel father's magic. Rebelling against his father- the Bone Master- by drinking and sleeping around was Kaii's main occupation for years. But when one of his best friends is kidnapped by pirates, Kaii embarks on a perilous rescue mission with two retired pleasure house workers, a shy teen bookworm, and a feisty girl from the pirate crew. The journey will take Kaii and his allies far from Achten Tan, to a sea ruled by dangerous conditions and ships that travel on the backs of monsters. For the first time in his life, he has the power to make a difference, but if he wields his emerging bone magic to save the girl he loves, he risks losing himself and becoming like his father - a man who tried to kill him.
I truly love this author. The first book in the series blew my mind. I enjoyed this book as well but I feel like the amount of sexual parts of the book (I don’t mean actual sex, just people constantly thinking about it or the sexual invitations etc) was so often that it actually broke up the story line and was distracting. I think had there been less of it and more focus on the journey it would have easily been a 5 star read. The second half of the book I enjoyed more, as it focused more on the story. The plot itself was a good one. I absolutely loved the powers of one of the people (I wont spoil it). The creatures in it was also a very unique and a fun aspect of the book. The characters are well done although I would have liked to have seen/heard more about Brax. Overall it’s a good read and I look forward to the next book!I was given an ARC copy of this book from the author and I am leaving this review willingly.
Book two of the The Sands of Achten Tan series and it doesn't disappoint. It was great to revisit some of the favourites from book one. The story line and world building is just as new and brilliant as book one. My only gripe is that this was Kaii's story but it felt more concentrated on Valla and Sozi (Compared to book 1 Mila's story) - which was still great and made sense with the plot. I guess the events here and the ending open up more of Kaii for the next one.
A thoroughly enjoyable read through out.
I was given a copy of this book from the author and happily share my review
I've read the first book in this great series and LOVED it, so I came with expectations to the follow up! Debbie writes interesting characters that everyone can relate to, but also hands them the most crazy story arcs and challanges that are fun to read.
As a writer I appreciate the work Debbie puts in the smallest details that leads to a whole fantasy world - the world of Achten Tan.
In 2022 books are not expensive. Our spare time is, and The Bone Master is worth your time. Enjoy.
🖤{My thoughts}🖤 ~ The world that Debbie Iancu-Haddad has created in both books is stunning. The massive creatures, the land, the powers and the people were all so unique. One of a kind story telling full of adventure and romance. And while this is labeled as a YA Fantasy, it still thoroughly entertained me and captured my heart.
Kaii, Sozi, Valla and Ruby are the alternating POVs in The Bone Master, and since our MC's were separated throughout the lands, it was very much appreciated that we got to flip back and forth!
Kaii's character arc from book one to the end of book two was my favorite story line and I love him so much!! ♥️ Of course, an awesome woman may enter his life and help him be a better man. 😘
While these are standalone books, I highly recommend you read Speechless in Achten Tan too! You get introduced to the magical system, and the world a lot!
A few months ago I had the pleasure of reading the first novel and now I am excited to review the second! The Bone Master follows Kaii and his journey to save his best friend from the dreaded pirates. With help along the way, Kaii discovers something worthwhile and his character develops nicely.
While reading the novel, I found myself caught up in Kaii’s world and could not put the book down! Kaii’s bone magic is such an interesting part of this story.
All of the characters in this are fleshed out nicely and the story is just as exciting as the first! The author's writing is intriguing and gives the reader a deep understanding of the adventure Kai embarks on. I think this novel is perfect for readers who enjoy fantasy and are ready for a new adventure!
The Bone Master, the second in the series of Sands of Achten Tan, is a pleasant read, with a fun array of young characters on their quest to save their friend Valla from the pirates who have taken her. The plot thickens and twists throughout the book, with alliances changing and characters moving from good and bad in surprising ways. The story is told from the point of view of the main characters, and it is nice to hear their voices and get various points of view on the story developing, and a lot of insight into their young minds, which seem to be quite busy with erotic thoughts, even when faced with death. I wish the magical part of the story would have been accentuated, as Kai's powers as a bone master are subdued for most of the plot, only really emerging towards the end.
Waiting for the next book in the series to see where the Achten Tan world takes us next.
"The Bone Master: Sands of Achten Tan Book 2" by Debbie Iancu-Haddad embarks on a spellbinding journey through a world steeped in dark magic, unrelenting challenges, and the complex interplay between power and morality. Seamlessly continuing the saga of Kaii Haku, the novel delves deeper into his struggle to escape the ominous legacy of his father, the Bone Master, and find his own path amidst chaos and danger.
From the very first sentence, "The Bone Master" captivates with its evocative prose and enthralling world-building. The opening scene sets the stage for a tale of both internal and external conflict, where the struggle against one's own demons is mirrored in the battle against external threats. The vivid descriptions of the Undercity and the palpable presence of bones infuse the narrative with an eerie, immersive atmosphere that pulls readers into its depths.
Kaii Haku's complex and compelling character development remains at the heart of the story. His journey from rebellion and self-destructive behavior to a newfound sense of purpose and responsibility is portrayed with nuance and authenticity. The exploration of his internal conflict, his efforts to resist the pull of his father's dark magic, and his determination to protect those he cares for add layers of depth and emotion to the narrative.
The introduction of new characters, such as the enigmatic and alluring Tara Phenix, injects fresh dynamics into the story. Tara's mysterious aura and the immediate chemistry between her and Kaii create an engaging tension that adds intrigue and excitement. As the plot unfolds, the interactions between characters, both old and new, contribute to a rich tapestry of relationships, alliances, and conflicts that keep readers eagerly turning the pages.
The novel skillfully balances action-packed sequences with introspective moments, giving readers a chance to delve into the characters' thoughts and emotions. The incorporation of bone magic and its consequences provides a thought-provoking exploration of the fine line between using power for good and succumbing to its corrupting influences. The internal struggle Kaii faces as he grapples with the allure of his emerging bone magic adds layers of complexity to his character arc.
Debbie Iancu-Haddad's writing is imbued with a lyrical quality that brings the fantastical world of Achten Tan to life. The vivid imagery and detailed descriptions paint a vivid picture of the settings, cultures, and magical elements that populate the story. Dialogue flows naturally, capturing the distinct voices and personalities of the characters, while also conveying their emotions and motivations with depth and authenticity.
"The Bone Master" is a seamless continuation of an enthralling series that will leave readers craving more. With its compelling characters, intricate world-building, and thought-provoking exploration of power and identity, this installment is a testament to the author's storytelling prowess. As Kaii Haku's journey unfolds against a backdrop of peril and magic, readers are treated to a rich and immersive experience that will linger in their minds long after the final page is turned.

In the wake of the events of the previous book, the residents of Achten Tan are trying to return to their lives. That’s not so easy for Kaii Hakku, son of the chief, whose life was turned upside down when gnomes Mila and Geb came to town. His father, the chief of Achten Tan, tried to kill him, and Kaii found out that he’s inherited the same powerful and dangerous magic as his father. His father is now a prisoner of the town he once ruled, and the weight of what to do with him is weighing heavy on Kaii’s mind. Kaii’s sore heart almost seems the least of his worries, so when a pretty pirate walks into town Kaii is happy for a night of distraction. What he doesn’t realise is that it’s not the type of distraction he imagined; Tara and her crew are in town to loot his father’s now unguarded treasure.
When the pirates kidnap Valla, Kaii’s friend, he ends up teaming with scholar Sozi, Tara’s long-lost brother who had been hiding out in Achten Tan for years, Dagen, and Dagen’s girlfriend Kiva. An unlikely group with history causing tension between them, things get even worse when they find one of the pirates trying to steal from them. It seems that Tara has left her younger cousin Ruby behind. Striking a deal with her for her help in catching up with Tara, they agree to work together and when they catch up to the pirates they’ll exchange Ruby for Valla.
Of course, nothing is ever that easy and along the way all manner of things go wrong for both groups.
In the previous book Kaii was the mischievous bisexual rogue about town, and I was looking forward to a book focusing on him. Sadly, the magical balance that Iancu-Haddad wove in the first book didn’t quite make it across to this one. It wasn’t the character development that let the side down, rather it was the overall tone of The Bone Master that disappointed me. I felt as though the author was trying for a more adult-themed tone and for me, it just didn’t work. I like romance in books as it’s a part of life, however, at times it felt like the characters of The Bone Master were more interested in hooking up with each other than saving their comrades.
That’s not to say that The Bone Master is not without its merits. Once again Iancu-Haddad has written a fun-filled fantasy adventure this time taking readers beyond the bone enclosed desert town of Achten Tan. It was interesting reading about the lands and creatures beyond the desert, especially from the perspective of the Achten Tanians who had only ever known life in the desert. Such a way of life is completely different to those of their pirate companions and Iancu-Haddad did a great job writing this into the story.
Overall, The Bone Master felt a bit rushed and less edited which made for a more disappointing read. The massive cliffhanger at the end combined with interesting characters and their development throughout the book has continued to hold my interest in the series.
The Bone Master is a continuation of the Achten Tan series but this time from Kaii’s point of view. The world building and the fantastical animals are great, and the author has really upped their game with this second telling. The addition of pirates was excellent. The pace is tight with the dangers starting thick and fast and the characters develop well. The pirates are good anti-heroes. There are however a lot of changing point of views and although each chapter was labelled, I did get confused at times. Readers should also be advised that there are a lot of references to explicit adult themes which I did skip over as I am not a huge fan of that type of genre but that is not say that other readers will not enjoy or be adverse to. There are also some potential triggers with references to rape and prostitution within the text.
Overall a good read and follow up to the first book ‘Speechless in Achten Tan,’ and therefore I award 4 stars.
The Bone Master builds on the world we discovered in the first book of the Sands of Achten Tan series. This novel can be read without reading the first, but it adds more depth to this story if you know what came before. The world building in this book is wonderful, and the creatures and characters are unique and vivid. I loved following the different points of view and seeing everyone develop throughout the story, especially Kaii. If you enjoyed the first book in the series, you'll definitely enjoy this one.

What a story! If you liked "Speechless in Achten Tan", you're going to LOVE "The Bone Master". The characters are impossible not to love, especially Ruby and Valla and Sozi, and the plot is to die for. So many twists and turns, and some really sweet romance as well. This book will make you laugh, sigh, and cheer so loud you lose the ability to speak afterwards. We need more writers like Debbie Iancu. Can't wait to read her next book!
3.5 rounded up. The overlapping of the perspectives got a little old by the end and the end felt rushed! Enjoyed the beginning and the middle quite a bit and the characters were fun!
